"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is taking the "Star Trek" franchise into both new, and familiar territory in its first season on Paramount+.
Following the adventures of "boy scout" Captain Christopher Pike on his USS Enterprise, the series will introduce a new crew with Number One (aka Una Chin-Riley), Spock, a young Nyota Uhura and more. The series will be set in the years before Captain James Kirk took over command of the Enterprise.
Whether you've been watching the adventures of Pike and crew since "Discovery," or if you're a fan of the original series coming to see what's new, you're going to want to watch this before you see "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."

I hope they stick with the canon and fix the breaks Star Trek always did pre-Star Trek: Discovery. Star Trek has an almost infinite canon that never made it to TV and movie media without the ST: D middle-finger to just about all of it. I hope they either go there or rightly say that their canon deviation is an alternative universe similar to the Mirror Universe but making the Federation very similar and not Nazi-kin... and not Discovery level canon-breaking middle-finger-to-all-OG-fans type thing in saying that it's the primary canon and all of its reality no matter how much it breaks it.

I anticipate this series with a mixture of fear and hope, all or which stem from the "Discovery" debacle. Please dont let me and millions of other fans down again. I dont think my heart can take it. The progeny of Kahn joining the crew is an interesting plot direction and I hòpe you'll give the implied association the justice it deserves- good or bad. There aŕe a million and one directions you can go in. Literally. The future of the Star Trek universe is in your hands. If this one flops- its pretty much over.

@@tomasrikona1309 Unfortunately, it's already looking pretty bad. Assertive, all-business Pike as Shy- Easy-Going Pike; Stoic, all-serious Number One as Cheerleader ''Una;' Spock as clownish straight man; Chapel as Badass Nurse; Uhura as Hoshi Sato; MBenga as textbook tokenization... And beyond this massive, cheap, lazy TOS character recycling (we were told even Kirk will be there as Bi-Kirk), the few new characters are not promising; ace pilot girl is The Fearless Peerless One (of course), chief engineer is the incarnation of arrogance and a Khan offspring; the most cliche fanfic character of all. Add to this obvious canon violations (i.e. TOS The Tholian Web was very obviously the first encounter of Starfleet with the Tholians, not Pike), the Abrams-signature dark scenery with light flares and the still starwarshy visuals (blaster, not phasers; lightspeed, not warp speed; maneuvering a 300 meters starship like a WWI fokker), this looks already more like Bland Old Worlds to me. Will I be pleasantly surprised? I had high hopes for DIS and PIC; we got Kurtzmantrek Disgracery and Pukehard. So excuse me if i'm not optimistic.

@@odojang Well then. Thanks for the heads up. I'm still going to watch it anyway because I wouldn't be a diehard Trekkie if I didn't. At the very least it'll give me an excuse to complain bitterly about the youth of today and how we could have done it better using soup cans and flashlights and taping a few cats together for aliens. Seriously though this political "bent" the series is on seems to be inspired by advertising and sponsorship and can't even really be disguised as political. Its more of a mental illness inspired by gender confusion and it pisses me off in a way I can't really explain properly. It's like some dark controlling influence has taken over the bridge of the Enterprise and spun it into some multidimensional gender confused galaxy that encompasses the past present and future. I'd blame Covid if it made sense. Maybe that's the point, I dunno. Maybe I'm just getting too old to keep up.

@@tomasrikona1309 Oh I'm gonna watch it too. At least the first episode. And so far, I have seen nothing encouraging, except some very few wrappings (the costumes, the ship...). I'm not asking for perfection; I'm asking for Star Trek; and not just memberberries; a hopeful, optimistic vision of a wonderful future of admirable characters meeting with rationality and professionalism the wonders and perils of the universe. Something intelligent and entertaining. It CAN be done. Phase II did it. STC did it; Axanar does; even fanfilms do it. In other words, what we never ever had officially since 2005; except in that other show that is supposed to be a parody of it. Not from Kurtzman to be sure; he explicitely said that is NOT what he is interested in. Nothing would please me more than being proven wrong. But then again, I said the same thing with all the other crap shows. So, I'm not hopeful.

I am looking forward to this series. However, I am just a little curious about one thing. What would be the possibility of showing stories of other Federation starships within the fleet from the Original series? There were thirteen vessels that were identical to the Enterprise. Surely they might have had more of a narrative than their own untimely demise. I understand that the Enterprise is the best in the fleet. Well, does that mean that the other ships and captains are less-than-adequate? Am I the only one who wants to know about the USS Constellation, USS Constitution, USS Excalibur, USS Exerter, USS Faragut, USS Hood, USS Intrepid (which was an ALL VULCAN starship in Kirk's time, but potentially active during the Pike era), USS Kongo, USS Lexington, USS Potemkin, USS Republic, USS Valiant, and the USS Yorktown. These ships were the original Starfleet and I would like to believe that they all have equally compelling stories within their walls.

Low budget original series? At the time, Star Trek was THE most expensive TV show of all (because sets, props, costumes, make up, effects, models), alongside Mission Impossible (because location travel expenses). It even started featuring original musical scores for EACH episode, a vast array of completely original sets and props, a good number of prominent actors of the time and topnotch sci-fi writers for screenplays. And the effects were peerless, except for the rare, exceptional theater movie like 2001 A Space Odyssey no less. So expensive in fact , it was to be cancelled after S2 because of this. Both shows where from Desilu which could not afford both. They settled for Mission Impossible... until Lucille Ball herself (the ''Lu''of Desilu) insisted to keep Star Trek on. That's how we got a 3rd (unfortunately) final, and yes cheaper, season. Too many don't realise this was also a full decade before Star Wars revolutionized FX. When full-length theater films like Planet of The Apes just barely started to revolutionise movie make-up. Meanwhile, with tens of millions per episode and topnotch computer technology, we get cliche, infantile stories from amateur writers, ripping off from better creations, about crappy characters played by unknowns, doing stupid, infantile things with actually cheap stuff (remember the free Internet stock images in Picard? The current backlot-filming, Wal-Mart costumed S2?). This ''low budget'' myth is perpetuated by people looking at it only half a century later and not doing proper research.

That being said, I have zero problems with anyone emoting their feelings, as that has absolutely nothing to do with age. Repressing your insecurities won't make you less insecure, it will just make you more unstable and therefore significantly more unreliable with the added uncertainty when you reach your tipping point. The first captian, Jeffrey Hunter, of the Enterprise was named James T Kirk. I was watching "the Menagerie" when they showed excerpts of the next episode. William Shatner was Captian of The Enterprise 1701. They changed the narrative.

What do you mean? The Menagerie RECYCLES the plot of The Cage, with kirk in the FRAMING narrative, @Louis White . He still agrees that he took over the Enterprise from Pike (as played by Jeffrey Hunter) Or did I misread what you meant to say? And yes, Shatner played Kirk. Different guy.
@louiswhite805
@louiswhite805 2 жыл бұрын
This is understood. The saga's beginning narative was re-scripted to insert Jeffrey Hunter as the physical character of Captain Pike in place of Captain James T Kirk. That role was then played by, the White Comanche Star, William Shatner.
@chrissonofpear1384
@chrissonofpear1384 2 жыл бұрын
@@louiswhite805 Yes, more or less. But the Menagerie aired more than halfway through season 1 (1966) long after the Cage was produced (1964) - which did not get aired at the time. They in many ways started out as the same character, inheriting similar relationships (Boyce/McCoy) but you would not easily mix them up. And Pike wasn't even known about by most fans, until then.

But will we learn that red shirts were at extreme risk before ST:TOS or just while under J. T. Kirk’s command. One error: the phasers are from ST:TOS. The phasers during Pikes tenure were not as sleek or smooth lines. See the “Menagerie” 2 part episode of ST: TOS.

I agree! The shirts look like Starfleet hospital scrubs the way the undershirt peeks out. Spock also needs to have his sideburns trimmed. When we last saw him on Disco after he shaved off the beard the sideburns were long and square. Now they are thin, long, and have a curly-q at the end!

Big hopes for showrunner, cast, and storyline. I enjoy watching canon get expanded, but after suffering through multiple Paramount+ series letting writers' rooms (arrogantly) run amok, I'll be canceling if this one follows the pattern. Unless Michelle Yeoh gets her Section 31 series

I know there will be continuity issues, I saw many in the clips. Some fans will be put off by it. At this point, there’s nothing any of us can do about that because the writers aren’t that familiar with TOS era. ‘The Cage’ is probably the only Star Trek they watched because it’s about Pike. But to get the complete understanding of the TOS era, you have to watch the series. All this being said, I hope that SNW will give us Star Trek style stories, not SPAM as someone else wrote here. It doesn’t need to be action packed in every episode because Star Trek never did that. Some episodes should be just about a character. The writers need to bring dimension to the new characters early on.

I've always felt that 2-3 episode arcs as a standard would work well. Single episode stories often resulted in rushed endings, and the inability to do more detailed content. But maybe you don't always have ideas that are good enouph for 2-3 episodes. So why not do like at least two arcs in a series, and the rest as single episodes.
@entelin

@P A You probably know this but the last season of Enterprise was filmed after the show was announced to be canceled. Before the last season the execs significantly interfered with the plot, it's advertising and so on. I actually thought parts of enterprise were pretty good, and the last season was genuinely good with the longer arcs, better stories, and getting rid of the stupid time travel plot that never worked out. Trip, Malcom, and Flox were fantastic actors, which made Archer look quite bad by comparison.
