Actually, moths secrete a liquid from their mouths before they emerge that fizzles away the cocoon so they can emerge! That's why silk worms are boiled to death while still in their cocoons so that the silk cocoon will be one continuous silk strand and yield more profit. If the moth emerges it weakens the strand and damages the cocoons value.

The pupa actually is neat..after it's dried and ready to be broken out of, the little lines and sections or markings on it kinda just tear since the moth is pushing against it, but it pops open so neat and tidy!

This entire metamorphosis can take 30 days, and is AWESOME to watch but it's also amazing in that time that this insect is very vulnerable to prey and to complete the transformation is truly as amazing. I'm also pretty sure this was in a controlled environment. ☺
