Actually, free will is an illusion. If it were true that we had the power of freedom of choice and action, why would we think unhealthy thoughts, why would we choose to experience unhappy feelings, and why would we perform hurtful, and destructive actions? Personal effort is just one link in a very long chain of causation.

@@bishoprod33 This is not something for you to believe or disbelieve in. If we want to go beyond the theory we have to explore the concept of free will for ourselves. It is easy to accept the idea of free will without even questioning it. Most of humanity has been doing that for millennia and has brought nothing but misery and suffering because of this delusion. We shouldn’t be lazy and not investigate the notion of freedom of choice and action. Free will implies independent thought, feeling, and action. Free will implies whatever you think, feel, and do is free from conditions. Is this true? Whatever my next thought, feeling or action is depends very much on what happens next. What happens from moment to moment determines my response. As I don’t know what is going to happen in the next moment, how can I consciously know what I am next going to think, feel, or do? For example, do I know what my next thought is going to be before I am conscious of it? The same applies to emotions and actions. I have no idea what I am going to do next prior to it happening. I may have an idea but I am not free to will a state of constant happiness simply because there is no such thing as a separate “I”. What most people are unaware of is that after a thought, feeling or deed is done, a secondary thought appears and claims it as its own doing. It says, “I thought...felt...or did that.” It claims to be the doer of action when in reality, the action was performed before the “I” appeared. The self is an illusion that has everyone hoodwinked into believing they are free agents in control of their lives. A lot of unhappiness in the form of guilt and shame is caused because of this belief. Some neuroscientists are also coming round to the fallacy of free will.
