Thank you! the air quality is certainly a big topic and isn't a very easy fix. The Great Salt Lake is a matter of incentivizing farmers to stop growing alfalfa and grow a less water intensive crop.

I've lived in SLC's basement, Utah County for 50 years. A protip: If you move to Utah, live in metro Salt Lake City's boundaries. That's where the culturally liberal go.

There is a lot going on in Utah County. What do you love most about living there?

#1 pro is it's real easy to get the heck out of there lol! To me Salt Lake City is more of a 'bourgeois' place to live these days so if you're an entrepreneur or are a silicon valley person or have a higher college degree it might be for you. Obviously being an outdoors enthusiast speaks for itself. I would say the biggest con to me is the lack of 'interconnectedness' culturally among the population. 40-50% of the population is all one religion and everybody else does their own cliquish thing. And I'd say unless you find a clique to belong to and are pretty outgoing you'll find it hard to develop close affirming relationships with an ample amount of people there. I think the Utah motto is 'If I'm doing okay, then you must be doing okay too!' The more money people make the less worried they are about how their neighbors are doing. And people primarily ignore one another socially in Utah for the most part. To be fair most of them are working 50 hours a week and then spend the rest of the time in the mountains so it kind of makes sense. One of the biggest detriments to living there is the state gov't will let you drink many forms of alcohol but does everything possible to squash things like mom n' pop wine shops or new age cbd stores, actual places that in most states have bars in them where neighbors truly get to know each other. Even small neighborhood bars are practically non-existent in Salt Lake because they're forced into being primarily restaurants. I mean you have to order food in them before you can order a drink for goodness sakes! I lived in Salt Lake for many, many years but am glad to be living in a place now on the South East coast where I can actually meet my neighbors and hang out without having to be a completely extroverted person or be limited to awkward conversations on each others lawns.

And we know, while SLC residents love their personal space, they also have a strong tradition of looking out for each other when it counts. When it comes to nightlife and social opportunities, it's true that Utah's liquor laws are unique. That said, SLC is filled with vibrant restaurants and microbreweries that allow folks to connect and unwind. Yes, it's different, but there's something for everyone. In the end, it sounds like you've found your happy place on the South East coast, and that's wonderful! However, for those considering a move, it's essential to remember that every city has its own charm, and what works for one person may not work for another. As they say, variety is the spice of life, and SLC certainly has a flavor of its own. @@SLCliving I will add that if you love personal independence, few places in the country will ever rival Salt Lake. If you have control of your own schedule, make a good income and have good family or a passion for meeting new people, meaning you naturally talk to as many people as possible with keen interest, I imagine you'll love it in Salt Lake. There is something that definitely lifts you up when you're surrounded by people who are very ambitious in nature/want to work hard like in Salt Lake. I do miss the 3-4 months of consistent sunny days in the summer/fall there. Something you definitely don't get on the east coast.

It's a great place, moved here in 2019 from bay area.... best, people are much nicer here, its big city living, food is mediocre, too many mormons, they can't driive.... other than that it's absolutely AWESOME...

I have a lot of family and friends there still unless you make 100k a year it's not a great place to live everyone moving there is killing the locals and a lot of people are struggling to keep a roof over their heads there avoid moving there the problems are growing fast and they don't have a clue how to handle them

all new houses or apartments in utah have been slapped together just as poorly as the draper home that slid off the hill . the homeless in downtown slc is out of control . the traffic gets worse every year and because of that the air is terrible most of the time . the city of salt lake has hoa like regulations for homeowners. utah sux don’t move here .

It certainly is, but also extremely unlikely because as you also mentioned it would affect the whole west coast. There are many very large companies and a certain religious faction ;) here that have too much money invested in this area to let it get to that state. The fix will be incentivising farmers to use less water and incentivise them to grow crops that use less water. Industry and homeowners use a very small amount of the water that ends up in the Great Salt Lake. When you look at the data the direct impact comes from agriculture.

Utah is great because it’s not Los Angeles. If you want Los Angeles go to Los Angeles. Don’t move here and try and make it just like the place you ran away from. There’s a reason people in Utah don’t like out of state people moving in, and it’s because you come here with your “progressive ideas” with no respect to our way of living, and then throw a fit when people don’t go out of their way for you. Do us all a favor and don’t move here.

No offense you should probably not talk about religion if you aren't going to respect people's beliefs. LDS has 90% of the population because of the western expansion but again it's not a con just because you don't believe in Mormonism doesn't mean it's bad. It's like banishing the Amish community like come on.

Mormons are disproportionately represented in the states’ positions and they literally tell their high population percentage how god wants them to vote on issues like medical marijuana during ward meetings. Utah is probably the closest the United States has to being a theocracy. There are good things about Mormons too. The family oriented culture is nice, and it keeps Utah clean and safe. Again, that also feeds into controlling others though (Zion Curtain and all). For most non-Mormons who come to Utah I think they would probably look at it as a con.
