Well done Micheal. Enjoy the vids you post. Although I don't race, I love cycling ,I played and coached rugby for many years, what I told the young guys coming through in rugby was " experience buys experience, you can't buy that". Keep doing what you love, you'll find the fast guys don't get any faster, you will.

Hey Howard! Great point! It’s awe inspiring as you see the difference in the categories. It’s like never ending levels and I’m looking forward to being as fast as some of these guys one day. Keep on riding!

Great effort in your second 3rd cat race, Spillingdon is always a tricky technical course with not many places to have a rest.

Yea was tough going. There was only 2 cat 3s in this race. So I didn’t have high expectations. The E/1/2s are fast!

welcome to the club 😂my first ever race at the don was with the Masters - mostly riders from CAT E/1/2 - I lasted with the bunch 3 laps got dropped and didn't have a clue what just happened. They are machines those guys. Might see you on Tuesdays in Cat 3 - 5 more races left

What is it with Wahoo freezing. Mine has only ever done it twice and they were both in a race at the start.

Same. It’s like they don’t want to put the effort in either 😆

Ha just seen this, cool vid. Appreciate the land speed record shout out. I was on barney’s wheel when he attacked at 5:04. There was a nopinz rider up the road already. We got to the finish as a 3 and the nopinz rider, Seb, took the win. He was on another level that day. iirc we averaged over 29mph to stay away. Great race, keep doing the E123 and you’ll be right up there before you know it

You guys are mad fast but definitely inspiring to keep getting better! Hopefully next summer I can finish mid table in this race. That’s one of my goals! 😃

Nice vid! What is your ftp?

Hey back at this race it was probably like 250ish. Although for crits your never really at a steady power. It’s a lot of on and off efforts. So repeatability of high output efforts in a vo2 max and anaerobic zone is where the secret is :)

@@michaelgraycycling had my first race 2 months ago in my Home town Got 8th on a 8 corner crit nearly all my power spikes are Above 900 watts just to keep up the hole race was single file because of the corners and no long straights. It was fun afterwards but hell during haha!

How much talking goes on in Cat 4, are you telling riders in front you are moving up if it is getting tight?.. Also what type of FTP would a Cat 4 need to not get totally rekt and thrown out the back?.. I ask as I am coming back to cycling after a couple of years of mediocrity but before that I was a 8-10k mile a year cyclist all be it mainly just regular riding and fast touring and never got to dip my toe into racing, just got a smart trainer and started doing the odd Zwift race and getting my mileage and hours up again over the last 4 weeks and starting to think about getting involved once I have lost 2 stone lol.. Great commentary and vids BTW

Hey man great questions! Cat 4 I found a lot of talking in regards to people telling you where they are. “On the right” “On the left” And so on. They’re generally a little more vocal as they’re a little more nervous. I tend to avoid it, as I always try to keep my front wheel safe and don’t put myself into sketchy positions where I don’t feel vulnerable. I feel if someone needs to tell you where they are, they’ve made them self vulnerable, which isn’t my problem, so I try to ignore them. If I’m moving up, I don’t really want to tell people I am, because that means they’ll want to protect their position. When I started at the start of the year, I was about 225 FTP. The speed of the peloton and being in the draft means you can go fast with little output at times. I’d say before your first race, make it your goal not to get dropped. I think that should be the main goal for peoples first races. Plus no harm in getting dropped out the back! I’ve been dropped a few times. It happens! Learning process. Each time I was dropped, usually meant I wasn’t in the draft for the minutes prior, therefor gassed out. Also In cat 4 there’s a huge range of racers. People in there 20s to their 60s. Every body type you could think of. So I wouldn’t let weight hold you back. Generally circuit races are flat courses, so unless it’s pretty hilly, I doubt it will be too much of a hinderance. Plus, it’s a race, the probability of winning against 20-50 riders is low. I’m yet to win a race. But each race is just a lesson learned. So don’t worry about yourself in that respect. Smart trainers make people so fast too. No coasting. So that will do you well fitness wise for sure! Hope this helps! 😃
