@c.b.727 Жыл бұрын
For the confused ones, since 2008 the Mexican government prohibited climbing on pyramids (excluding Riviera Maya's pyramid) ; that decision was made for the historical monument's conservation. If you are caught climbing, you have to pay a penalty fee. Edit: To answer the most common questions in the comments: I do not have all the information about the penalty, If you're thinking you'll risk it then that's something you need to check in Mexican laws or with a lawyer idk... Just know that jail is usually a part the consequences for deliberately ignoring the law. Those asking about some kind of permission to climb, you can get that via INAH if they allow you, they have information about it in that same governmental institution's official page.

There's lots of Mayan pyramid site spread throughout Southern Mexico. You can't climb that one, but there are other sites where you can climb (: For example you can climb the pyramids in Merida, Mexico because they aren't as tall (less hazardous from falling) and less worn down. They give tours that take you to the top and demonstrate how they would pray up there using their Mayan language. It's much more interactive than this main site that has the biggest pyramid.
@richardtibbetts57410 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info. I guess I kinda thought that if you weren’t hurting anything, then you could climb the steps. People should ask an official of the site first. However, the interior stone stairway was very narrow, dark and scary to descend from. @@garyschultz883 The wear and tear on the pyramids was probably too much with so much foot traffic. The government probably shut down the climbing to preserve the pyramids

@@jenniferj.9973 Yeah the pyramids in Egypt have forbidden climbing for a long time...guess this was inevitable...

Last I knew when I was there, they were joking about people falling down the pyramid and said that people had literally fallen down and gotten hurt. I think we were supposed to sign a waiver, but as long as they were getting paid money, they didn’t care if that was anywhere in Europe for the US there’s no way you would’ve been allowed to climb them.

@@garyschultz883 also, those steps were so narrow I can’t even tell you how scary that climb was. When I got about 1/4 of the way up, I just stopped looking down because if I would’ve looked down and the couple times, I kind of would catch the corner of my eye. It was so scary.. I remember even when I was climbing up, I couldn’t believe that people would climb up it, because of how narrow the steps were.

I loved the way she thought people were cheering her then the look on her face when they throwing water at her. More disrespectful tourist should be treated like this.

You were able to climb these steps years ago. Truly is mob mentality when you say ‘disrespectful’ when its the Yucantan government not wanting to be liable.

theres a video of a guy who did the same thing and got beat with a stick! But for real the steps are there why arent they blocked off - are there signs not to climb?

Its no big deal. I climbed it in 1983. It’s not disrespectful at all, just a safety hazard. Lots of Karens there too.

why ? no one respects ours. I used to believe that, but until my country, flag and culture get the respect it deserves, I'll return the favour
