Let me tell you something people, this is coming from a ten year Navy veteran, this young man is 100% correct on every thing he is telling you! He is not bullshitting you on anything, I wish to hell that back in 1981, that I would have had somebody like this to explain in depth the information he is giving you. Listen to him, don't think for one minute that he is lying, or making up bullshit, he is right on target on every single topic that he is talking about, consider yourself lucky that he is giving you the information that he is giving you!!

1982 I joined non designated, I wound up in a squadron onboard USS Midway CV41, was it the best 4 years ever? Nah it wasn't but it was badass! I look back on it and it was a game changer for me. I'm 53 years old now with 30 years in public service. The Navy was good to me,not easy but good. ⚓️

@JTsuits you are completely right about this! when I went to megs I already knew what I wanted to do. I wanted either GSM,MM,AM,AD. they offered me CS,SH,BM,AND PACT. I told them no to all of those and they tried to pressure and guilt me into signing for one of those rates. As soon as I started walking out the door all of a sudden one of the rates I wanted suddenly became available. I picked MM and I couldn't be happier. thank you for putting out this great information.

When I went to MEPS (1984) they did all the high pressure stuff that JT speaks of. They literally left me in room by myself to "think" about it. I got brought in and refused to sign unless I got specifically the job i requested and my recruiter said was available and I was qualified for. This is after all the medical stuff was completed. They sent me home saying that position was not available, next day my recruiter calls says there was an error and he will bring me to MEPS and that position was available. I refused and thankfully I didn't cave in because within months I ended up in a great job that I kept for next 30 years.
@addicttedtoblood7 жыл бұрын
Most recruiters will tell you that the actual asvab is easier than the practice ones they give you, for example one girl from my office got a score in the low 90s on the practice but got a perfect score (99) on the actual asvab, I did 97 on practice and 98 on the actual test, and meps everything they could to get me approved for nuke, they even went as far as calling a coordinator from another area to get the paperwork approved (our 2 coordinators were on leave at the time), they will work with you to find something you like, but listen to him when he says not to let them pressure you into anything, you haven't signed your contract so you don't owe them anything, take as long as you need and do as much research as you can to find something you really want to do, and study for the asvab, it helps to know what they could ask you
@raymundoserrano51406 жыл бұрын
Agree with the last part you said. I have a degree and I wanted to test my chance in going in as an Officer. The recruiter I was with always told me that enlisted was better. He was making up things. I was the doing my research at the time 2 weeks of me doing my thing he just told me that I wasn’t ready and left.

Oh my GOD! I wish I would've watched this before I enlisted!!!! You are absolutely right though. They try to tire you out right before you swear in. Before I went to MEPS I was up by 3:00 am, I didn't finish my physical until 5:00 pm. they didn't have the rate I wanted, but I had three people in my face saying "well we can't let you leave, you have to sign up, it looks bad if you leave without picking your rate" and they just KEEP GOING. you wanna think that you'll be coherent enough to make a rational decision, but you are just so ready to leave the office. DON'T !!!! know what you want ! Take a deep breath and TELL them what you want! All they can do say how they feel, but nothing else. THIS IS YOUR LIFE and one of the few times before you leave were you have a strong say in what you do.

I didn't know what I wanted to do after HS. Work? School? Military? I cruised through the summer but come September my old man said I had to make a move. A cousin who was like a brother said to join the Air Force. I went to see a recruiter. Two days later I took the ASVAB. Two days later I went through MEPS. Two days later I was on my way to Lackland AFB for basic training? WTF?! Pre-internet days. Didn't know wtf I was doing. Worked out, though, as I spent the next 22 years active duty and guard and loved every second of it. Lesson learned: Don't always have to plan, everything can and will work out!
@navy47357 жыл бұрын

I used to volunteer to escape the mushroom locker and do anchor detail. Also gave me a chance to eyeball the corresponding bright spots on the screen with things that were floating (Anchor drops). So for MEPs 1. If can't pass a DOT CDL and stay that way for the time specified on the Form 4, maybe Mikki D would a better career choice. 2. Boatswain's mate is not bad, once you make BM2. 3. Bring $40 and 2 sets of clean underwear and socks (white), a good pair of running shoes and a jacket. Make sure that whatever you are wearing or have on you won't be some thing that won't be missed if it gets lost. You won't be needing civies for about 2 months. You will be able to keep the running shoes, but won't allowed to use them until the final PT test.

I had to leave the Army recruiter...they could never give me an answer if my choice MOS was ever available. But they were really pressuring to just get me to sign something. They told me I was going to MEPS for just the physical and the ASVAB, then after they picked another guy up and we were on our way (i.e. I was basically trapped in the car at that point) they said "are you pumped up and ready to enlist?" Pretty dirty tactics.

Not trying to insult the rate, but it wasn't what I wanted but after they explained the rate I was expecting to be around airplanes which I wanted, but I ended up going ship's company instead.
