Just as well they ran away otherwise they might have got their tootsies wet. I'm joking, I love the Icelandic people, practical no-nonsense, they hear the ice crack, turn and off and they ran through those boulders like they were born to it. Which they are, of course, must be something they learn as a child you hear the ice cracking leg it. Unlike people in the more soft countries around the world, something goes down and there is always one who wants to stand around and discuss it, hey dude why you running...smack!! Darwinism strikes again.

@G M OMG are they those mysterious man-like apes the Big Foots? Hmmm..some of those Big Foots were quite cute. Handled getting through the boulder field like champs. Should be a Winter Olympic sport boulder hopping. Iceland would win gold for sure. Not that these creatures were Icelandics apparently.

Having seen a few of these videos, there is no way I would be anywhere near an ice block covered beach. Those blocks (Yes, some are real rocks covered with snow. I know.) got up there somehow, and the hulking great billion tonnes of ice in the background is likely the cause. It’s just as big and impressive from higher up and further away, than on the edge of a freezing death trap.

The reason is that there is an underwater cliff facing the wave. As the wave reaches the cliff, which does not move, there is suddenly no more water to fill in the wave cycle and so it collapses in upon itself instead of towering higher and breaking. Without the cliff there, it would have raced in with tons more water like a tidal wave. I'm a surfer by the way, so I see waves a lot.

The biggest tsunami ever happened on July 9, 1958, when an earthquake along the Fairweather Fault in Alaska unleashed a massive rockfall that generated a huge wave that travelled across Lituya Bay. The force of the wave removed all trees and vegetation from elevations as high as 1720 feet (524 meters) above sea level, and millions of trees were uprooted and swept away.

@stewg4661 3 жыл бұрын
I'd be curious if there was a way someone could calculate how big the tsunami was that was generated by the meteor that hit in Mexico that caused a lot of dinosaur extinction. That would have had to produce one hell of a tsunami.

@@wedge5896 I was joking. You were not. But I agree with you. Glaciers are rapidly disappearing: Matterhorn glacier gone. Muir glacier rapidly disappearing. Kilimanjaro 85% gone. Chacaltaya glacier, totally gone. Not enough space here to list them all. Marv revealed his/her abject ignorance on the matter. Losers always go for the ad hominem, a litmus test for losers.

@Marv Gardens He is right, that Breiðamerkurjökull glacier is receding, the glacier lagoon has only been there since relatively recently due to the ice calving so much and forming a lake, pretty soon the entire glacier will be gone. It has already receded many miles in recent years.

It’s a normal ongoing, somewhat seasonal event. Glaciers on the waterline will always do it (and sometimes inland) They aren’t static. I suppose if the water became a lot warmer it may happen more, or faster, but basically, no. Cows are blameless 😄

Yes, the glacier has been rapidly melting recently, all the glaciers in Iceland are disappearing. That lagoon didn't used to exist until recently and is meltwater. There is a ton of research on the Icelandic glaciers and their charted erosion.
