Trump and his supporters are so misinformed. NATO countries owe nothing to the USA. Five basic points about the U.S. and NATO: 1. NATO members don’t “owe” the United States, and NATO countries don’t pay the U.S. to defend them. 2. Contributions to NATO are based on each nation’s capability and its national interests, as agreed to in the treaty. 3. The U.S. decides for itself how much it contributes to NATO. 4. The military commitment of the U.S. to NATO isn’t a favor to Europe. It’s vital to U.S. national security. 5. European nations should probably spend more on defense because their security requires it. But that's their decision.

Reading all the comments here it is staggering that with this debate going on for some time now some people still think countries "pay into" NATO. Is it really so hard to grasp that the contribution to NATO is measured mainly by the percentage of GDP spend on defence on the countries own military? Is it so hard to grasp that there already is an agreement to meet the 2% of GDP spending on defence until 2024?
