Unless they REALLY want what you have, most burglars are going to find a place without a security door. Even the illusion of security is enough deterrence for most criminals. They don't want things to be difficult, or they'd have a real job. They want things the easy way.

Yeah, it's good enough. Most burglars won't attempt to break a security door. Not worth the extra efforts.
@LegendaryJim3 жыл бұрын
right? he flippin' needed a hammer, chisel, and a high grade pair of wire cutters which took well over a minute. If they're putting in this kind of effort and have that much time and privacy to bust through (only) your security door, you're pretty much screwed regardless.
@milesmccall23013 жыл бұрын
@@LegendaryJim This door was defeated in 60 seconds with with a $5 hammer and a $10 pair of tin snips. Compared to actual security doors which require loud power tools or significant lockpicking skills, this door is a joke Thieves aren't scared of cameras. They'll be gone in 5 minutes, long before police arive.
@LegendaryJim3 жыл бұрын
@@milesmccall2301 If someone brings a hammer, chisel and snippers to get through your front door: that amount of preparation and planning is more than enough to get through anything a middle class homeowner will put on their home. If they're that determined to breach specifically "your" home, then good luck keeping them out. a cordless metal grinder can be bought on offerup for $20... with the amount of noise this fella made, you might as well be cutting the damn locking mechanism off the door: it wouldn't take more than maybe another 30 seconds to a minute. They're just upselling people on a false sense of security by making the assumption that if slightly better tools are needed, the situation has changed. If someone has invested this much time into breaking into your home then it isn't likely that any consumer security door is going to help you. Moreover, if you took that much time and made that much noise just to get through the security door, someone is going to see you. Consider the time it took to walk up to the door and that there is another door behind it. Anyone willing to take that much time and make that much noise will either be seen by a neighbor, heard by a dog, or they have far too much privacy at your entrance: which means they can pretty much do whatever they want anyway. Cameras help substantially, considering there's a very high chance that the person who broke into your home is someone you know. Thieves with enough brains to bring tools to a job don't typically go busting into the home of someone they know nothing about.

A double lock deadbolt needs a key on both sides. Install one of those and even if someone breaks the screen and reaches in, there is no knob for them to turn. Keep the key close to the door, but out of a thief's arm reach. Easy fix.

another scary thing is that most security doors are installed into the trim around the door. Bolts are usually driven into the trim and into the empty half inch wide gap behind it. I installed a security door on my home and found that I had to remove and relocate the studs closer in. In most cases Im sure people have a handy man install the door and the owner has no idea that the door is hanging on a half inch piece of trim.

That actually look fairly difficult to get into, I mean it took a hammer, a chisel, and wire cutters and it took probably several minutes of cutting and banging. I think that any hardening of your house is simple deterrence, getting a criminal to bypass your house and move on to someone else's. If someone really wants into your house there are any number of other paths of lessor resistance (i.e. windows, french doors, pet doors, key left under a door mat, etc.). If your inside when they trying to break in, hardening your house will slow them down giving you time to put in a call to 911 and get the police rolling meanwhile if your comfortable and practiced with an appropriate firearm (i.e. 12ga pump shotgun loaded with #00 buck) you can just wait in a safe place behind cover for the police to get there. If the criminals do get in be prepared to defend yourself or escape your house.

I don't even consider a thumb knob deadbolt to be a lock anymore! I ONLY use double key deadbolts, and have for years at my home. I don't care if it's legal or not..what are they going to do..come IN and check it? Laugh! I don't think so.. regardless..it's MY damn door! I don't have kids, or overnight guests. If I get a relative from time to time, I show them where I hang the exit lock key. Just in case..but I have NEVER had to use it for escape. But it HAS saved my house twice so far!! Mine has those damn small windows by the ft door..both times broken to open it with their hand! Nope..nothing to turn! My whole house exterior doors are keyed alike anyway..for a little extra safety from inside. If I ever lose a key I can just rekey them myself. It's the only way to go!! Safe!

A determined thief can get into your house giving enough time. The security screen like this one requires the thief to have burglar tools on his person, not something a repeat offender wants to get caught with. Takes time to breach the screen and time is the enemy of a thief.. and their are easier targets down the street. Lot to be said for having a dog.

The idea of a security door is to add reinforced security. To assume all break ins are random is silly--most times folks who take the time to break into a home know what they are looking for and will lay and wait for the opportune time when not likely to be seen. A security door you can breach with wire cutters kinda defeats the purpose if added security is your goal.

That is "almost silent" if you have a small vacation cabin in the desert with no neighbors near. That is why the front wood door has a bar across from the inside and the back door that we enter through has a plate welded to the door around the locks and much thicker screen around that. The problem is out there a thief can almost take as much time as they want.
