Virgin Galactic has sent Richard Branson into space (for just a few minutes). Watch the full flight, from launch to landing, including the billionaire's first moments in microgravity.

An amazing machine but, historic? This thing has flown before. Without Branson. Was it historic because he was on it this time? It (Virgin 1)also flew and killed one of the pilots when it broke up in mid flight. So you might say that it was historic in that it didn’t explode with Branson on it. People forget about the USAF flights with the X15 program in the 60’s. Launched from under the wing of a B-52, carrying on the work of the Bell project to break the sound barrier in the late 50’s with it too being launched from under the wing of a B-29. During 13 of the 199 total X-15 flights, eight pilots flew above 264,000 feet or 50 miles, at a staggering speed of mach 5, thereby qualifying as astronauts according to the United States definition of the space border. These pilots paved the way for the Space Shuttle program. A rocket powered glider that took off like a rocket and landed like a glider, setting the stage for the likes of Branson and his Virgin ideas. So his ideas are really about commercialization of this and not anything truly historic. He’s just trying to make a buck off of already proven technology. Several test pilots were killed in the X15 test flights and the program was ended in 1968. Proving that this type of flight into Low Earth orbit is inherently complex and much more dangerous than you are led to believe.

Richard and his colleagues are not 'crew', they are passengers. So much hype for a 5-minute upper atmosphere fly-by. Interesting that the altimeter says over 4000 feet when they have already landed and stopped. So how high did they really go?
@tman4362 жыл бұрын
Yes I noticed that too after they had landed, so are they already over 4000 feet above sea level and it's registering as that, hence the reading it's showing???? I'm sure all the cameras attached to this flight will all be released as is, no editing, no nothing just pure "virgin" release to the public.. wink wink wink
@jameshepler622 жыл бұрын
That’s because for you doubters who clearly know nothing about aviation; proof that they were using an ACCURATE Altimeter, calibrated to SEA LEVEL, since the Altitude of the Airfield is 4640 +/-, therefore they didn’t go to ZERO on the ground. This is why when you go to many REAL Airports/ Aerodromes it actually says on a Sign visible to the Flightline, the Airport Name & the Airport’s Altitude above Mean Sea Level (MSL) because that’s really important when flying ie. Taking off/ Landing. The Airport Altitude is also noted on Official References for that reason. If you notice, the Altimeter feed even notices the ups & downs on the Runway itself, it’s that accurate. The announcer even says the Altitude of the Airfield around landing. Pay attention. This in NO way minimizes the accomplishment or the ability to Air Launch. Which even the Air Force & NASA have used. When perfected, it’s a more efficient way to boost some things to Space. It doesn’t matter where you start it’s how HIGH you GO that matters with Spaceflight. Stow your stupid “conspiracy theory” doubts.
@tman4362 жыл бұрын
Oh no not a doubter of any kind, actually asked a question about a comment made by another, no doubt in asking a question while looking for an answer and if you noticed I did ask is it because they are already 4000 about sea level, appreciate the feedback.

The amazing breakthrough today is Branson's rocket 'horizontal' take-off and landings that are healthier for Earth than Elon's verticals that make the planet shake noticeably more than usual and waste all that fuel and energy that produce the massive explosions and firing blasts.

Not actually space? I think it was. Just over the Karman line as set by NOAA. That's all that was needed to display proof that VG's concept works, (and works well enough to take Branson himself, and well enough to already gain FAA approval.) I'm excited about it, because VG's vision is for commercial space travel for you and me one day. And a day after that, it will be past the Karman line, to Saturn's moon Titan. (Or whatever). Until then, the reality is the cost to make it happen. Luckuly there's a steady lineup of people wealthier than me and you already booked. I say awesome. More cash to pump into advancements. A lot more cash. Go Branson GO!
