I do have a frog pond but not my own work. I pick up sale sweaters made of beautiful yarn to frog and knit into a creation of my own. When my daughter was little, I bought a beautiful sweater at a garage sale and she didn't care for the sweater I remade. When she was in college, she asked for the sweater. SHE then refrogged the frogged yarn and made scarves for me and all her pals for Christmas -- 20yrs ago and I still have mine!

Collecting yarn & patterns is a totally separate hobby from actually USING said yarn/patterns...lol. I've been crocheting nearly 30 years & just started knitting in the past 2 weeks (I currently have 2 WIPs on my needles just from watching your videos!...lol) but i reached SABLE a looooong time ago...even after divesting 2 contractor trash bag sized bags to my daughter & daughter-in-law (gotta share the love!). Thanks again for all of your videos!...as I said, I'm a brand new knitter & your videos have been some of the best that i've found to get me off to the right start!

Some other good terms are "cold sheep" "stash busters" "DPNs" "Deep Stash" "Stash diving" I think the term "block" as used in knitting comes from making felt hats -- A flat piece of felt is formed onto a block (of wood) using steam which shrinks the felt onto the hat-shaped block and gives it a permanent shape. You can also (re) block a finished hat back into the appropriate shape. The idea being that you are shaping the knitting in the same way you are shaping a hat.

@@JeanetteFitton Going "cold sheep" is just like going "cold turkey" -- you don't buy any more yarn until you've knitted your stash down by a substantial amount. "Deep Stash" is yarn you've had for quite a while.

Those are Projects On Pause where you're thinking about frogging but haven't made up your mind or you've gotten distracted by new yarn and dropped it like a philandering boyfriend.

Hi Barbara I needed a You tube break and decided to jump back in with Your videos. 8 out of 10. Had not heard of KIP, altbough I both knit and crochet in public, and SABLE. A lot of them have parallels in quilting. A Layer Cake is a package of 10" precut squares. A Block is the basic unit of a quilt. Thanks for the fun!

I started knitting this year but I've been crocheting for 13 years so some of these were interchangeable. Technically I got 8/10 but one was a misunderstanding so 7/10. I thought I knew what TINK meant but I didn't realize it was different than FROG. I FROG stuff all the time when crocheting (I have some pretty funny pictures of piles of yarn from frogged graphghans gone wrong) so I thought TINK was the same thing but for knitting. Lets see...I didn't know KIP or SABLE. And thank you for making me feel better about my yarn "collection". I always say I'm going to do something with it but TBH it's just pretty and I liked it so I buy it. My husband is a gamer so compare it to him "collecting" games that he's never going to finish :D This was fun. Thanks for sharing.

OMG --- you speak to my soul!!!! I got 8 out of 10 (just started knitting a few months ago) but your explanation of SABLE was mind-blowing for me! I can't figure out why I have reached SABLE in just a few months, and was so worried that I have a problem. But you nailed it -- seeing the beautiful yarns in gorgeous colors just brings me joy! I know, I should wait until I have a project for them, but when I see something pretty and shiny, I have to buy it! Same thing with patterns -- even ones that are way outside of my skill level. So, if the world ends, I'll be knitting long into the apocalypse. (Just checked my Ravelry stash - is 40,000 yards too much? I just turned 58, so life expectancy..................)

Thank you Barbara for TINK. I had never heard this term used but I have used the TINK process from time to time when I lost concentration on a project. STABLE is a term I will use for the rest of my life expectancy!!!

I totally enjoyed this video. I had not heard of Sable, but I totally qualify both in yard and fabric. Thanks for the great program. btw, I have knitted at a major league baseball game, a mall, on an airplane, and at hospital, to name a few public places. When I was young, my parents were active in church activities and sometimes meetings were held at our home. The wives all brought their knitting and of course my mom did too, even though she was at our home. Believe it or not, when she went to high school in the 1920's, the girls were required to learn to knit and sew.

FYI, "block" might come from French (my first language). In French, we use the verb "bloquer", of which one of the meanings is "to stop" - so in knitting, it's stopping the stitches from "moving".

SABLE - That''s ME...I mean...that's where I my stash is! I didn't have a clue about what Sable meant, well, except for the pretty animal with the gorgeous fur. Now I do! MOST cool! (And you need at least 3,679 Starship Enterprise Models...of course!) I didn't know KAL although I should have. Counted cross stitching does SALs after all. And TINK....the cool this is that you showed how to take off one stitch at a time going on row below the row you needed to take out. You just made my far from perfect knitting so much better! Four of them I didn't know but once you explained I realized that I was doing what the words meant I just didn't know what it was called...tink,lys,kip and sable...I will never reach sable because I live on a fixed income and my needs are met but there's not enough for the wants... but I'm fine with that because I am blessed to have what I need to live. Thank you! Can I tell you a secret? When I first started making videos I wanted to say the same thing each time. What I decided on is the "Hello knitters, Barbara Benson here." and the reason I decided on that is because of Sesame Street. I based it on the Kermit roving reporter vignettes where he says "Hi ho! Kermit the Frog here!" But I thought Hi ho would be a bit odd LOL!

That was fun Barbara! I have been knitting for 37 yrs & I got 9/10 words. I thot KIP was "Knitting In Progress" rather than "Knitting In Public". Also thot that bcz PIP = " Projects in Progress". Here r 3 more: PIG's = Projects In Grocery Bags; PHD = Projects Half Done; HALF PINT = Have A Lonely Fantasy; I've No Time". Did u know those 3 Barbara! Outa all the acronyms, I luv SABLE.the best!! & Im trying to acquire as much SABLE as possible!! Also here is a Phrase to help keep Yarn Weights in order from thinnest to Bulky. Here it is "Like Friends/Say, Some Day We'll All Come Back" which stands for: "Lace, Fingering/Sock, Sport, DK, Worsted, Aran, Chunky, Bulky". ( I suppose u cud add an "S" at the end of the phrase for "Soon" which wud = "Super Bulky". I hope that phrase helps someone easily remember yarn weights in order!

This was great. I learned so much. I've noticed that even with quilting new lingo has come about in the past decade. I love SABLE. My fabric stash might be considered on it's way to SABLE. But my yarn stash gets used much quicker via crochet, but one day I will learn to knit. =)

SABLE was definitely a new one on me. Some people would probably look at my stash and say that I have definitely collected more yarn then I could use in my lifetime. I have to disagree. According to KnitMeter.com I have crocheted more than 17 miles worth of Yarn this year alone. So far. That means that I’m going to run out in about six months. I have to buy more yarn. 10/10! Though I usually spell SABLE with "accumulation" instead of "acquisition". XD I have not reached SABLE myself... if I had as much yarn as a friend of mine has, that might be SABLE for me, but she knits so fast I'm pretty sure it's not SABLE for her. When it comes to WIP versus UFO, I tend to think of WIPs as being the ones you're still actively working on, and UFOs as the ones that for whatever reason have stalled long-term (and may never get finished). And I think you would appreciate the best knitting-related TShirt I ever saw - "I tink, therefore I ma"!

Be careful: when I've heard "knitting in reverse" or "knitting backwards", it didn't mean tinking, but rather reversing the knitting process to knit from the right needle to the left, as some left-handed knitters do. The people I know who do this usually have learned by mirroring someone who knits from the left to the right, as they might by sitting across a table from them.

If you watch that part of the video again you can see me hesitating on that because of the very thing you mention. It isn't really knitting backwards because as you say that is something else LOL. But it is called Tink because that is knit spelled backwards - so there's some semantics going on there LOL.

4, but only because I didn't know what LYS, KAL, KIP, SABLE, tink, or UFO were. Well, as they say, you learn something new every day. :) But I also thought that skein was like what you would find in Walmart and what you held up was a hank. Clearly I still have a LOT to learn. I did KIP a couple weeks ago at the time of this comment (on a Sunday), where it was hot. I didn't knit long, as I had other places to go to, but it was pretty great. I was knitting in the round. :) I ended up with some sunburn, but I don't blame my hobby. :) I forgot the sunscreen. :)

So I almost included skein, hank, cake, and ball - maybe that should be my next video. Some of these terms have multiple interpretations. I think you can call the log-shaped center pull yarn a skein but generally it is the thing that looks like a twisted doughnut LOL.

This was fun and interesting. I didn't know four of them. Tink - although I've done it plenty of times, LYS - here in the UK we call a store a shop (but the initials still work), KIP - I know some people don't like to knit in public but I don't have a problem with it, it seems to fascinate people and you can guarantee someone will start chatting to you and lastly SABLE. Before KZbin brought American knitters into the British knitting world we used to call all yarn whether acrylic or alpaca "wool". Even now it feels strange calling it yarn but I'm trying to move with the times. 😁

8/10. Got stumped by KIP and SABLE. I learned a new one about 2 years ago when I walked into a LYS and described a project I was frustrated with and put aside until I felt I could cope with it again. The woman in the shop said “Oh, you put it in a knitting time out”. It’s still there by the way! Not sure at what point it transfers from time out to a UFO though...

I deducted half a point from two, lip and Lys. I was familiar but couldn't remember exact translation. My favorite recent term is yarn porn, making its way through crochet sites when I have come across it. It means sharing recent yarn acquisitions or yarn stash in totality. Or just new yarn reviews. 👍😁💖

I got seven out of ten. I’ve never heard tink before (I always called all of it frogging...in fact I have a project in the frog pond right now). I knew WIP because I’m a writer so that crosses both fields! But I didn’t know KIP (even though I’ve done it, lol, and spun as well). I also didn’t know SABLE (I don’t have much of a yarn stash, but I have a decent amount of unspun fiber). UFO was kinda a new one for me, but I guessed it! I also didn’t know LYS, though I have one here locally that I like.

I always wondered why it was called frogging. Here in the UK we just used to say we had to undo something, rather boring, frogging is a much better term, rip it, rip it. 😆

I know about SABLE, but unless you have a SABLE stable, it's not something at the forefront of your mind so my brain stuttered a bit there. I was thinking "Stash Enhancement eXcursion for a minute. HAHA I surely do not have a SABLE stable. That is a lot of yarn to feed and care for. :) I am currently at my stash tolerance. I have display yarn on a peg board that I call my yarn wall. These are yarns I purchased with projects in mind and then changed my mind. They are there to use whenever the right project comes along, but until then - they are pretty. I stash up sock yarn in hex boxes attached to the wall and then use my sock machine through the year and sock it all up - then start all over again the next year. So I have two seasons each year socking and stashing :) HEHE

8 definitely, 1 (KIP) I could have remembered with more time, and SABLE, totally new. My 'issue' is definition, or just 'what is'. CAKE, I get. Skein, to me, is a prewound (ie; Red Heart. Bernat, Caron, Hobby Lobby, etc) yarn ready to use. What was shown, the coral/orange yarn I learned is known as a Hank.

There is some debate as to the definitions of those terms, I considered including them but they probably need a video all to themselves. From my experience a hank is when the yarn is displayed in the loop without being twisted in any way. When you twist the hank it becomes a skein. But I don't think there are truly definitive definitions that don't run into debate.

8 out of 10. Missed KIP and SABLE, although I take my knitting most places to work on when I'm waiting, in meetings, etc. And I think I'm a SABLE person... Although I might stand a chance if I retire from my job and quit buying new yarn. Neither are likely to happen soon, gotta work to keep buying yarn... Just spent the evening watching podcasts and tinking back to a mistake in a WIP I'm working on for a KAL. No LYS here, nearest is a couple hundred miles away.
