"Not Fade Away" as written by Buddy Holly, and Friends, is about 2 1/2 minutes long. That barely gets the song going by the Grateful Dead. The boys can jam this tune out for 30 minutes at times, THAT is creativity. And the crowd loves them, just listen to the proof.

My very first Grateful Dead show , they did this as an encore, with the whole audience singing back to the band--- the energy & vibes were AMAZING!! Pure magic! 🎶⚡🎶✌🎶🌈🎶💜🎶 Biz , this was originally a Buddy Holly song, but they made it their own. Next Grateful Dead? How about "Lost Sailor/Saint of Circumstance"

I was there too. It wasn't my first show. That was in Toronto in 1977. Went with a wonderful woman I had just met. We're married for 33 years now.

Aww, that's a grate story, Paul! Congratulations on the long-standing marriage ~ 💜 This video wasn't my first show, that would've been Alpine '86. I'm pretty sure I was at this 89 show, too-- the memory's a bit hazy, lol...✌

Good stuff!!! That "Hey Bo Didley" beat Buddy Holly lifted, The Stones popularized, and The Dead elevated, is based on a Rumba, I believe. Other fine examples are "Magic Bus" by The Who, and "Willie and the Hand Jive" by Johnny Otis (popularized by Eric Clapton). You may like The Dead's versions of "Iko Iko" by The Dixie Cups, and "Women are Smarter" by Harry Belafonte, they feature similar rhythmic structure. ~Peace~ ⚡✨🧙🏾♂️✨⚡

Nice! I saw them on that tour, about a month later in Sacramento. The Rolling Stones cover of "Not Fade Away" was their first hit, the one you skipped when you reacted to their first album. 😀Buddy Holly recorded the song in his parents garage on a single track recorder with the drummer keeping the beat on a cardboard box to avoid overpowering the other instruments and the vocals. That beat is called the Bo Diddley beat. Bo Diddley introduced it with a song called "Bo Diddley" that Buddy Holly covered as well, thereby helping to desegregate the radio.

Always a great song to end their show. Sometimes as an encore, but people usually just sang ❤ You know our love will not fade away - over and over and over - until we got an encore! I lost my husband in 2005, but our gravestone says Love is Real ~ Not Fade Away Actually, on the bottom of our marker it also says 🌹 What a Long Strange Trip It's Been🌹 Not long enough for my husband though, he died at 48. Played Ripple and Brokedown Palace at his funeral. I sure recognize that shirt Bobby's wearing, I even have some photos of him wearing that shirt ❤

Lost my love 2020, turned me onto the Dead. Our headstone says "you know our love will not fade away" as well. I also have a tattoo over a stealie that says Love is Real, not fade away. Trying to find peace and some semblance of life after he died. Coming up on 4 years.

If anyone wants to hear an absolutely off-the-chain Not Fade Away by the Dead, they should find a Matrix recording of the band's show at MSG on 9/21/82. The one above is pretty good, but that one from MSG is off the charts. That whole show is on fire, especially Jerry's playing.

Favorite encore closer over the years. Brent would be gone in 90 and, to me, Jerry would never be quite the same (performing in the Grateful Dead) Jerry really loved playing with Brent and Brent would actually “push” him, which Jerry really seemed to love! 87, 89, 90 probably my favorite “Brent years”!

Saw Dead and Company at Fenway a few years ago. This beat played throughout the whole night in Boston. Not the best rendition in my opinion of this by the Dead but it’s not your fault! There’s so much out there it’s hard to choose

I did Bears at my first show after I asked Jerry if I could sit behind the amps and he let me. The first person I met is Baar dropping liquid acid on the back of people’s hands and then they licked it off. I stuck my hand out and he put four big drops on it and I licked it off. Bear hooked me on with his local dealer and Bear made some great stuff. He liked MDA which was a 9 hour LSD trip compared into about an hour and it was intense. Well Jerry let me on the bus and Bear dosed me. What could have made it any sweeter? .Me asking for a job. I would have never met my wife if I had done it so met my wife in 1988 .Jerry’s gone, the wife is still here. Roll Away The Dew ⚡️🎸⚡️
