Commenting to add boot-smacking lore: in an episode of Too Many Spirits where Shane has gotten a little too drunk and starts to get apologetic and self-conscious, Ryan reaches over and slaps Shane on the boot. A tender Shane says "Thanks for slapping my boot, you know that makes me feel good." and Ryan says "I know it does, that's why I did it." I remembered I'd seen Ryan slap Shane's shoe before, and it was in this vid. So I think Shane's a guy who is comforted by a friendly pat on the foot, and Ryan is a friend who provides.
