@artemisia5663
@artemisia5663 3 жыл бұрын
@@sayarasa8961 well, it's really not plausible- since the transporting of so much artifacts would have a very high cost, also, by your logic, Mona Lisa should be back in Italy? And with that, the Musée du Louvre would lose some visitors.
@zxyabcc
@zxyabcc 3 жыл бұрын
Artemisia So? Let them lose visitors. Those artifacts are not theirs to begin with, and most of the times, they have no cultural/historical association to them (prime example would be the ancient Egyptian artifacts and mummies they have smuggled into their countries). They are just greedily holding onto them for cash flow, like you are right now worried about Louvre losing visitors instead of these artifacts being returned to their homelands, where they actually belong. The fact that these European countries, especially the Brits and the French, have stolen and smuggled so many cultural artifacts from different countries that they have more than enough to display and exhibit them in several different museums is just mind blowing. Some countries like Egypt and Turkey are constantly asking them to give back their artifacts, even volunteering to cover the transportation costs in some cases, and their requests are simply being ignored on the pretense that these countries don’t have means to protect/take care of their own artifacts, which is so arrogant and outdated.

I remember studying this in AP Art History. My teacher was very passionate about teaching us that a ton of art was stolen from its native people. Enough that it rubbed off on us. If you're getting paid it isn't slavery, when you are drafted you are still paid and are free to spend your money how you wish to like when someone is drafted into the military. For all the shitty things the British did and its early involvement in the slave trade to America, Britain were the ones who made the first steps to ending slavery World wide. Imperial Britain or Europe in general doesn't have many happy stories but that is one of them.

@@gmc5618 I'm not doing that. I was talking about a world wide focus on the abolition of slavery. The British actioned blockades around the entire coast of Africa and would capture any slave ships they could and free the slaves. Slave rebellions are extremely important parts of history but are often very localised. And like I said I'm not trying to cast the entire British empire and all its actions as heroic just that they played a key part in this particular area of history.

@@AGD_27 Let's not forget that the British abolished slavery just to replace it with a system of Indenture, which included the torture, whipping and shooting of multiple Indian serfs in the sugarcane fields of Fiji Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. Indenture had all the "fun" of slavery, but at least they got paid, right?, a sick euphemism if anything. And not only that but Indenture lasted till the 1920s, which has left a sizeable negative effect on current members, especially on Indo-Caribbean and Indo-Fijian communities who are highly marginalised today. So when you say, "if you're getting paid, it isn't slavery", remember how the British Empire gave numbers to the Indian-Indentured labourers, how they were transported in inhumane conditions in which cholera and death followed. Once on land, how they suffered at the hands of the British plantation owners, the same hand they had dealt in the Americas before the abolition of slavery. And in fact, those who signed up for Indenture were coerced and manipulated, even kidnapped from their villages, so no, there are no happy stories in this context.

@@CellularShenenigans Well there are, because that happened in India - especially under the East India Company (later problems were absolutely there, but they were typical massive incompetence and not seeing what you don't want to find) and they ended the transatlantic slave trade a completely seperate social institution of with it's own matrix of human suffering and evil. It's whataboutist if anything to compare apples to oranges- just because the empire had an effect in two different places. It looks at the British as a monolith rather than acknowledging the massive political will it took to begin their quest against slavery, and the actions of millions of citizens in the world's most powerful representative government to see it through. You don't have to pretend other evils don't exist, or even that later politicians and businessmen used it as Moral Licensing for later evil (just like literally all neocolonialism), especially when criticizing the effects of their incredibly damaging extractive insititutions or stupid implementations of the evils of capitalism. They perpetrated it on others, but just as much on themselves. Like when tens of thousands of sailors went to entirely preventable deaths because there was no free market incentive to keep them alive, and literally every incentive in the world to let cheap as fuck boats sink. Children in the coal mines. Really not hard. But instead of doing nothing about an evil they felt was wrong they spent an insane amount of money, manpower and great efforts by theirs and even the American navy to ensure the slave trade ended. Not to mention the herculean task of starting that movement in the first place by William Wilberforce, and as well partly by a former slave ship captain no less who famously wrote a poem that became the lyrics to Amazing Grace. Which is someone taking responsibility for their actions and changing the world as a result -- which is a good story that's important to know and share. History is not a zero sum of evil, because almost no Empire is evil - they are an extension of human nature, good and bad and it's reductive and ignorant and if applied to any issue today - really fucking unproductive doomer bullshit - to fail to see the efforts of those who fought for what was right in all eras of history.
