In 'Walden', Henry Thoreau told us: "Simplify, simplify". What we possess ends up possessing us, and our lives go by trying to prevent others from taking it away from us. Some like expensive goods and that's fine, but that extra level of complication in their lives comes at a price. My two best watches are inexpensive Casio and I sleep peacefully.😊Regards from Chile!

Reminds me of what a controversial and interesting man once said: "Happiness is a state of soul's satisfaction, a total expression of harmony between our aspirations and the realities of life. Due to this i believe that it's easier to attain happiness trough renunciation than trough the pursuit of the satisfaction of necessities increasingly numerous and intense. The pursuit of happiness therefore requires, i believe, a continual state of dissatisfaction." António de Oliveira Salazar.

In Australia high value individual items such as jewelry need to included on your home contents insurance as "Specified Items" (I work at an insurance company in Aus) ... but. it makes a significant difference to your premium. You are right on the money Tim, $200K worth of stuff should of been stored in a bank deposit box, not in a suburban home.
@karlsenula9495
@karlsenula9495 Жыл бұрын
If you can afford $200k of watches you should be able to afford the insurance. If not you may pay the price if stolen. Kind of like a beach house and storm/hurricane insurance. Beach properties aren't cheap so insure it. If you can afford one, you can afford the other ... spend the money on the other or else you may regret it.

@@karlsenula9495 I don’t necessarily disagree, but you may be underestimating how much it costs to insure watches. For a $200k+ collection it’s gonna cost about 5k a year, and there might be a deductible. That’s the cost of a new Rolex every couple of years…or 50k over a decade. The question is no longer if you can afford it, but whether it makes financial sense vs security systems, safe deposit boxes…just not keeping everything in one place… or just not owning that many watches to begin with. It’s not just a simple addition to a homeowner’s insurance policy. Look at it from the insurer’s perspective. The collection is worth as much as his house…the risk of theft or fraud is *much* higher than the likelihood of a total loss of his house. In fact when it comes to watches those risks are as high as it gets. The more fundamental question would be whether one should have a watch collection worth as much as his house…

@@beardymcbeardface69 …Australian? So 484k real dollars. I’m not sure if his the median house, lol. Is he still using bedsheets for curtains? Either way, not really the point. Insurance will cover replacement value of the building (which they’ll lowball) not any value of the land, since the land can’t go anywhere. So let’s say 1/3 of the value is in the land…the median policy will cover a little over 300k (usd). $200k in watches will cost more to insure than 300k of house. Higher risk of loss. (Look what happened: he just had a total loss of the watches). Moreover: watch insurance will cover what they consider the replacement value of the watch: which is the original retail price. Let’s say you have a Patek from 2010. Retail price at the time was 12k. Retail price for the same or similar model today is 18.5k. You paid 25k for it in 2019 and the current used value is 40k. Now it’s stolen. You want 40k for a new one….or at very least your 25k back. But the absolute most they’ll give you is 12k (original retail), and they’ll try to knock it down from there. They don’t care if there’s a 10 year waiting list, or the watch is practically impossible to replace. They won’t pay for you to cut the line, or for what they consider an upgrade to a model that’s 12 years newer.

Archie’s eldest son has a narcotic problem according to Archie. That son has been in the studio and Archie tried to get the young man engaged in his channel (didn’t work out). No saying the boy did it but maybe his friends did. The biggest mistake Archie made was not storing the watches in the bank safe (he did that before). I think he wanted to fill his $10K Louis Vuitton box with his watches, but the LV box didn’t fit in the bank safe deposit box. How he convinced himself that a safe could not be broken is ignorant to say the least. No alarm system means no safe is secure enough. No separate jewelry insurance policy is reckless.

Thanks for the video! The main problem with insurances is that they don't tell you on which basis they will reimburse the goods stolen. It's not the retail price, not the average price at auction houses, not the expertise price... And of course they will take whichever methods makes them pay less. If Archie had an alarm it probably would not have happened, as he would have got a message that the alarm was off, or the noise would have deterred the burglars from attempting the safe. In this case I think it's likely that the burglars somehow knew the odds, they knew it was a safe there, they knew it would be a good chance at least some watches was inside, they probably also knew the movements of the family, and they had a good idea when his wife would get home. Noise like this in the day is not unusual as it could have been building work going on. Anyway terrible situation for him, I really feel sorry for anyone this happens to almost regardless the circumstances.

I think that the first measure of safety is not to "advertise" that you have something of value. Tim does have pretty good advice, but I also have to state that majority of burglaries are done by someone whom the family knows (of). Most of the time it's distant family members, friends of friends, work colleauges, clients, etc. Someone who knows relatively lot about you, especially in the case of watches and other luxury goods. Junkies, petty thieves and other random criminals people usually think will burglarize their homes, they tend to burglarize stores. Safe deposit boxes do seem like a good option, but bear in mind that very often it happens that you'll be denied access to it at times when you need it the most. e.g. When it comes to bank safe deposit boxes there is a possibility of third party denying you access to it (think of evacuation scenarios or being politically blacklisted).

I would say there are two kinds of Einbrecher: (1) lowlifes who climb through open windows, grab whatever they see, and get away in under 10 minutes; (2) professionals. A good safe will give a lot of protection against the first kind. But Profis? They will wait till the right time when they can work undisturbed with power tools. They will get a safe open or (where it is more appropriate for them) extract the whole thing and take it away with them. I can only whole-heartedly agree with the Caseback approach to security: the entirety of a big collection of watches or jewellery should NEVER be kept in the home - only one or two pieces at any given time. During extended absences, trips overseas, etc, NONE of it should be left in the home. And if, hypothetically speaking, something of value were left in the home, it is probably better not put in the safe! Let the criminals sweat for 4 or 5 hours to open the safe only to find it empty! (Meanwhile, the jewellery is in some hidden cavity in a random room of the house...)

I would not be surprised if Paul Pluta's home was being watched for a few weeks before and perhaps even for a week after he went away, so that the occupants' comings and goings could be observed. Then the offenders could pick an ideal time to perform the robbery when they could be sure no-one was in the property for the several hours needed. Paul did say on his YT vid the other day that he ran out of time to put his watches in safety desposit. Also heard of minor payment problems resulting in the closing the SDB account and the contents being seized. Home owner’s insurance is also usually not sufficient or affordable for watches, jewelry and firearms. Even special riders are not optimal. Agree 100% with guarding your public profile. What I found very odd is they covered the place in paint, Archie said it was to cover fingerprints. Why would anyone go to such lengths when all they have to do is wear latex gloves. I mean it's not even guaranteed you're not going to miss a spot or forget to paint somewhere you touched..it doesn't make sense at all. It does however make it look like you were burgled. Also Archie said he had his watches in two designer cases. How did the burglers get those cases out through the tiny hole in the top of the safe, how were they even able to open those cases through that hole you can barely fit a hand through. How do you get past the first shelf to the bottom section without taking the door off and removing the shelf that way, how do you access the bottom of the safe with the shelf in the way and a hole too small to put power tools into to cut the shelf? Archie said himself he paid somone to break open the door of the safe so the thieves only had access through the fist size hole at the top. Why does somone with 200k worth of watches only have insurance that covers up to 15k? Really if you look at the room there was actually very little damage and nothing that couldn't be cleaned or replaced cheaply. It was only messed up, and dusty, along with some areas painted over. I really am suspicious that Archie just had an old safe he wanted to get rid of or didn't care about destroying and is scamming people. Also where is the entry point where they broke into the house he never showed that. Not that it's proof of anything it's just one less thing he'd have to damage if he was pulling off a scam. Fools have already donated nearly $5K to his go fund me. I can't believe people are so willing to give him money with no conclusive evidence. I really think the KZbin community should force him to show a police report at minimum. But honestly even then it could still be a scam it might just mean the police don't have evidence to prove otherwise. He should also show proof the place has been assessed by his insurance company. If his watches were truly stolen then I feel bad for him because he's not a rich man by any means and it would be soul destroying to save all your life only for them to be stolen, but he really should be made prove it if he's going to have the audacity to beg for money.

All homeowners policies have a cap on jewellery and watches that make just one luxury watch requiring a special rider to cover it. Every single watch needs to be documented and submitted to your broker who then has the underwriter quote the added premium. You are talking around $150 per year per $10k dollars on average. And that is on retail replacement estimates, NOT on appraisal values which many insurers of watches will NOT do. Your watch might be $100k to replace on the resale market. If that watch or it's current iteration retails for $30k, that is what they insure. They do not care that you can't find it at retail. Facts. If you want a higher appraised value on discontinued or highly collectible watches, you are paying quite a bit more and they will be required to be stored in a bank safe when not in use, not in a home safe.

If you live in a reasonably sized house or apartment, I'd suggest not keeping all your valuable items in one place, not even a safe, which as we've heard can usually be defeated given some time. There are plenty of non-suspicious places you can hide things and if you spread them around in different places then your chances of just losing an item or two as opposed to your entire collection are much better.

You are right, there is an excellent video with the Police interviewing a crook and his MO. They like houses where no one can see in too much. First room to steal from is the main bedroom eg Jewellery, chains, watches etc Leave a couple of low value items around for them, I have a couple of watches I leave out ( they don't even work) . bit of cash etc I don't leave much in my safe. If you leave out absolutely nothing, it sends a signal that you have things hidden for a reason. Crooks in m most cases want an easy job and to move on quickly.

What did you mean by insuring watches in a bank safe? Is that on your own insurance or the bank's, and if the latter what checks does the bank carry out to make sure the cover reflects the safe's contents?

The bank's insurance. At least in Germany every box comes with a basic insurance of let's say 30k (depends on the company I think). If you have more value in the box you can buy an extra insurance from the bank up to every amount you want.

Keeping high value watches and jewelries in a safety deposit box is better than keeping them in a safe at home. The major issue with keeping valuables in a safety deposit boxes is legal confiscation but it really depends on what’s being stored inside the box. FYI, FDR signed an Executive Order during the 1930’s Great Depression making gold ownership illegal and confiscated the gold owned by Americans, and those who had kept their gold in safety deposit boxes were not allowed to access their boxes until a specified date can be arranged to legally open the box in the presence of an authorized federal agent. This means all investment grade gold coins and bars inside the safety deposit boxes were confiscated.

As one who has collect luxury watches for 45+ years, with 18+ in the biz with the last 9+ as a Certified Swiss Master Maison, and I will say without getting into specifics only that my collection is extremely secure at home, and the rest are in the care of two different banks!! The other thing, and I've posted all of this on FB in the big watch groups, and that is that if one has anything more than a few four figure watches, Home Owners WILL NOT cover them!!! Please read my posts as I've listed the top insurance companies that I've used across 45+ years for both my Professional inventory(Jeweler's Mutual) and my personal collection(AXA), though a new company appeared in 2018, called "WAX," whose catch phrase is "watch collectors insurance by watch collectors," though the company's policies are underwritten by Chubb, an old school white shoe firm which underwrites quite a few of the watch insurance policies, regardless of the company. Bottom line, unless one of these companies that offer watch insurance wrap you homeowners' policy around it, unless it is one of those "watch specific" companies and policies, your collection WILL NOT be remotely covered value wise by a home owner's policy😉 Regarding Paulie, and as I stated to him in his own FB group, where's the police report??? He's posted everything else and he could post that and bearing in mind that this is the man that left everything out there for the public to see(as former LE, I believe that IF in fact a theft occurred, it was someone very close to him versus a stranger😉), though he could black out any addresses, tele numbers or sensitive information. This would just verify that this event in fact occurred. An old adage that LE has told crime victims forever and that is... "if you don't file a police report, a crime didn't happen" This goes up there with the YTube dovchebag scammin the guy with the fake Daytona, the switch hitting masseuse/ho for hire, Anthony Farrar, and his fictional "home invasion," 😂😂(at least the police think so), as another bullshit YTube story😂😂🤙 Those who have questions regarding how to set up a watch only policy can find me all over FB and PM me🤙 Apologies for the novella🤪 Have a Great Weekend Gents👊 RP

Bank is best way. Very good safes can be opened in much less than 4-5 hours. Archie was mis-advised by his police. You also have to think about fire. Most safes are not fire-proof. And worse yet, the ones that are more fire-resistant are less burglar-proof and vice versa. Insurance can be very costly if you have a collection worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. To distribute risk you can do smaller safe deposit boxes at two or three bank locations rather than one.
