The “Bulova “ worn by Dave Scott was a Universal Genève Tricompax with a Bulova dial. Bulova owned UG at that time. Retired General Omar Bradley was company president of Bulova and was pushing NASA to fly an American watch. Scott was given the Bulova “prototype “ to take on Apollo 15. For years NASA would not identify it as a Bulova and it was speculated to be a Gruen. History is strange. Also, Fortis developed a watch in the early 1960’s called the Spacematic AR (all risks) and gave them to the Gemini astronauts. In their 100 year commemorative book they indicate one or more were flown. I had been thinking that was an AR on Conrad’s arm below the Speedmaster but it could well be a Glycine airman.

Yes I have a Fortis Swiss and I have I mid 70s Vostok cosmonaut I collected them because of family ties to NASA and after the Cold war speaking to some fairly well-known cosmonauts who told me the story of course the Fortis tells amazing time ... With the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and Omega's announcement of bringing back the iconic 321 caliber, I thought it would be a good time to do a video on this topic. I, of course, did not live through the time periods when these watches made their trips, but I always remember my dad (who grew up during the 60s and early 70s) telling me stories of these great achievements of mankind. I could tell the childish wonder he had watching these missions has never really left him when he recounts the moments. If you did have the opportunity to live during this time, I would love to hear the stories and what was going through your mind. This one was a pleasure to make!

I'm probably the same age as your dad. It was a very exciting time. We watched the Apollo missions on television in school, and I actually got to see Apollo 11 blast off in person because my dad drove our family down to Florida to see it. I also saw Apollo 12 and 13 in the vehicle assembly building while we were there. We later watched the moon landing on television at a motel. Every time I watch the movie Apollo 13 it reminds me of those days. I was 10 years old in 1969, and I had a model of the Apollo command module and the lunar lander, just like the one the kid has in that movie.

Buzz's watch was likely taken by someone as a souvenir. They probably thought, it's just decommissioned government issue equipment, and by the time anyone misses it, no one will care enough to look for it. It probably ended up in some Boomer's dad's attic, where it was unceremoniously thrown out, since it was in a corrugated cardboard box, buried under Rotary Club or Knights of Columbus memorabilia, that the Boomer didn't care to go through, when he was settling his father's estate!

A part II with watches from Gagarin, other soviets, mercury, gemini and other USA programs as well as the european and japanese (Space stations era) would be great. Also a part about explorers on earth... scalating the everest, the poles, old ruins, the depths of the ocean... that could bring a lot of interesting factor. Watches are also tools and back then they where also using their rolex and omega and all other brands on pretty rough enviroments.

Excellent video, Ted. One of the top tiers on this 'Aviation Enthusiast's' bucket list is to own a collection that includes each model of watch that has ever been to space-- including digitals. Next on my list is to own the 'also rans' (ie the models that were tested but failed to meet requirements.) I would love it if you'ld make a follow-up video to this one, and possibly a later one featuring the pieces that didnt make the cut... Thanks for what you do! --- Oh yeah... forgot to tell my 'moon' story: in 1969, I was 1 year old when my mother sat me down in front of our gigantic, B&W console tv saying, "you'll be glad I did this when you get older." On the screen were these men in big, puffy suits climbing out of a round-ish ship on what I would later find out was the moon... And, while its cool, today, to be able to say I saw Buzz & Neil take the historic moon-steps of Apollo 11, what sticks in my mind the most was how big & ugly my Mom's B&W, saw-tooth patterned couch (that I was sitting in front of) was. The thing really was not pleasant to look at, even for a toddler! Lol *Ah, the priorities of a one year old in 1969...

Nice episode. No space watch commentary can be complete without highlighting the Bulova Accutron Astronaut. This was issued to the X15 and Blackbird/A15 pilots and was also widely worn by the astronauts of the Gemini and Mercury programs. Many photos from those early space programs show the astronauts wearing the NASA-issued speedmaster on one arm and their own private Accutron on their other arm. A watch ahead of its time, using an electric field to energise a tiny tuning fork to drive the mechanism at 360 times a sec. The movement provides a beautiful minute sweep that gives the Grand Seiko Spring Drive a run for its money. Make sure to include that in any follow up! Keep up the interesting shows.

Kev P as the ad was telling me I must be a barbarian, harasser of women, wife cheater, racist and finally like to see my kids stomp on other children they don’t know shit about men and I’m very happy to be part of the problem. And I’m very happy to say I’ve bought a different set of razors for the first time in over 25 years.

It is really crazy that the bulova that actually went to the moon sold for 1/10th that Paul Newman's chronograph sold for. Amazing! Great video, thanks for the info! Love to see a part two!

Being interested in one day getting an Omega Speedmaster, I got a Strela chronograph in the meantime specifically because it's a space watch and potentially to allow me to have representation of both sides of the Space Race in my collection. Oddly enough, I later added a Glycine Airman Purist primary for the 24hr movement yet later learned that it too has been in space. Guess that makes sense as the Airman is an iconic pilot watch both commercially and in the military, so it seem plausible that an astronaut would have one as a personal watch. I had kind of wrote it off after getting my Strela, but is slowly reconsidering the Bulova Lunar Pilot chronograph. Its precision sounds very alluring as, while I love my mechanical/autos, I do like having watches in my collection that I can trust is consistently in sync with the master clock, if anything, to allow efficient clocking in/out at work, lol

Great video, but on a part 2 you should mention the first watch in space, which was a Sturmanskie on the wrist of Jurij Gagarin, the first man in space.

Great one Teddy. If you’re going to do a follow up, how about watches that have been into space? I’m sure there are many may. Perhaps dozens giving the number of countries that have been to the International Space Station.

enjoyed the video, though i feel like you left out the most important one (the Sturmanskie). since you touched on the strela, the sturmanskie chronograph (different watch) would have also been worth a mention.

I read around that you can order the Bulova Pilot and ask to the brand to put the black watch version dial having the advantage of the yellow markers and the old Bulova typography in order for it to be a closer replica to the original one.

I think there still material for a second video! I guess that if the Apollo 11 watch is found and went to auction it can fetch more money than the Rolex Daytona Paul Newman! Keep the good work!
