Important update! I just got a mail from Filippo Loreti and they are basically forcing me to take down this video. They are using the fact that I used a couple of pictures that they own, in this video. This is a great example of why you should stay away from this "scummy" company. They are trying to take it down because of the fact that I criticise them in this video. Regards GAW

The truth is Seiko, citizen and all these "affordable" brands need to be better at marketing especially towards the younger generation. The reason DW, The 5th and other fashion brands are so popular is due to their smart marketing. Giving out watches to big youtube channels and other social media platforms is easy marketing, something the older established companies seem to not do.

As a previous person mentioned, people who buy fashion watches don't care about history or movement. Seiko/citizen should talk about watch heritage and movements in their commercials. They should also mention how watch enthusiasts respect their brands more than a superficial fashion watch.

The problem is marketing cost money thus it would inflate the prices on these reputable brands and render them “overpriced”... Fact is every single watch snob has had a kickstart brand. My own case was a swatch see-thru case and a Casio Illuminator.

I agree with this video, except for the Invicta. I am actually typing this with an Invicta on my wrist, and although it has only been about 8 months, the watch has been great to me. The case is actually rugged as all hell, and the crystal hasnt scratched (knock on wood) despite wearing it daily and bumping it into things regularly. Of course, I do think that $1000+ is quite ridiculous for an invicta, but I think they are definitely worth ~$100, which is what I paid for my model 0420 (all titanium). It looks fantastic, has 200m water resist, automatic movement (occasionally it can be off, but by no more than a minute), and I am actually incredibly satisfied with it. It is by no means a cheap watch. I would actually say that I recommend at least certain models. And for the point about them being ugly, isn't that up to the buyers opinion? You can't really call a brand bad because you dont like the style....... But anyways the rest of the video was great, just that one point didn't quite settle right.

Nobody mentions the 5TH watches? They have low quality watches for a price qualified as "cheap" (150$). What makes them woest is that the artificially limit production, making them only available on the 5th on the month. I remember when I bought this very similar minimalistic all black watch on AliExpress for 6$ and compared it to my ftiends Fifth watch. I don't think I've seen someone almost cry from regret.

Keio Sim A $10 watch is all you need. People still buy them because they just work. In some ways you’re better off ignorantly buying a $10 quartz watch for $200 than buying a $1000 watch which requires a $300 service every 5 years.

@@user-xg6zz8qs3q If you buy watches for its basic utility that is to tell you time, then yes absolutely, you are right. But the point of buying high quality watches is so that you can own it for a LIFETIME. Just imagine buying one highly well made watch and passing it on to the next generation kids, and those watches STILL WORKING LIKE THEY ARE NEW! Last time I checked, a high quality mechanical watch is made to last atleast 300 years if it was given basic service from time to time. Not to mention, the artistry, hardwork, craftsmanship and the intense extremely complicated mechanical engineering that goes into making such a simple device that is a wrist watch. Imagine owning a watch that took like six months to produce for the company. These watches will end up becoming antiques of the future.

You have made many good points. As a watch collector, I have a few guidelines. 1. never pay more than $ 100.00 for a quartz watch regardless of the name on the dial.( An exception could be CASIO G-SHOCK. ) 2. The movement maker is more important than the name on the dial ( Most of the time they are different.) The exception would be if you are buying as an investment ( in which case I would say buy real estate instead of that Rolex! ) 3. There are many vintage watches out there that are no longer made but have very great quality. ( I collect watches and I will not shoot myself in the foot by telling everyone what to look for! ) 4. classic Swiss and U.S. made BULOVA watches are greatly underrated! 5. Russian VOSTOK amphibia watches are worth every penny ( As long as they are under $100.00!) 6. A well made classic American pocket watch ( Hamilton, Elgin, Hampden etc. ) is better ( and a better buy ) than a classic Swiss pocket watch .

My every day watch is another Seiko, a Moon Phase watch I bought 35 years ago for $200. The glass is now a bit scratched, the crown is pitted and worn, there is some discoloration between the glass and rim of the watch, but it still keeps perfect time (gains about a second every four to five days). Many band and battery changes later, still going strong and shows no sign of giving up.

"Quality" watches don't last a life time! They still need to be serviced every ~5 years and it often almost costs the price of the watch. I am assuming that most people would straight up buy a new watch over fixing their old one. So the argument of value for money is kinda moot.

Purchase a watch on each store, and compare the quality; I know that the quartz movement is cheap for a fashion watch, but the stainless steel that they use is of the highest quality, they use sapphire crystals, and the built quality is astonishing. They also offer automatic movements.

Today, watches are pretty much reduced to the role of jewelry. So what it looks like is actually more important to the owner than a fancy movement, since accuracy has, since the advance of quartz, been presumed to be good enough. The days of inexpensive watches losing many minutes of time each day are long gone.

I have a mix of quality branded watches and fashionable watches, and honestly I have been wearing a lot of the fashionable ones more often lately. Better recognition by the average person I run into, they look good and yes they are more likely to break, but they can also be gotten for great sales. I’ve gotten Armani watches for $50, that people compliment every time I wear compared to my omega watches which has a gorgeous movement, and amazing build quality but is barely recognized. And a watch is a statement piece in my opinion, to check the time we all have our phones or a computer close by at any given moment.

The best brands for mid-range watches that offer high quality movements and genuine Swiss made construction are: Tissot, Wenger, Victorinox, Swiss Legend (increasingly hard to find for some reason), Invicta (be wary of the specific movements used), and Hamilton. The best Japanese brands are only Seiko and Citizen. If you want a really high quality watch (entry-level luxury), then I would recommend: Longines (highly recommend), Alpina (highly recommend), Hamilton (again), Baume et Mercier, Ball (highly recommend), Certina, Oris, Christopher Ward (highly recommended), Eterna, Oris, Luminox, Tudor (highly recommend), and Maurice Lacroix. Try to avoid buying quartz watches; not having to wind them is a benefit, true, but mechanical movements are far more accurate, not to mention more elegant. Hope this helps!

And I also cant stress enough how stupid Hublot is a as a brand. They literally sell 50,000 dollar gold watches (with a rubber strap) that have ETA movements that are seen in watches that cost 2000 dollars or less. They dont even modify the movements by adding features or looks. They literally just put their name on the rotor. Now they do make 100k+ watches with in house movements, but anyone would have to be stupid to buy that over an AP / Patek / Lange

The first (and only because I’m still new to the watch game) fossil watch I bought was one from the Minimalist line. It’s really simple and elegant

The reason why those fashion watches are so similar is apparently they use the same supplier in Shenzhen, China. Basically what they do is they ask the supplier to send in some samples, they choose the one that they reckon will dish out the most money, put their logo on and charge you a couple hundred bucks. This was told to me by a watchmaker in the Melbourne Watch Company, despite them starting via kickstarter they are now known as one of the best microbrands, fully assembled in Melbourne Victoria and tested to bits before one even manages to reach your wrist. I have seen how they do stuff and they're just like the Germans, extremely perfectionist.

You do realize ,that whether a watch is ugly or not ,is strictly personal opinion . Many people wear watches as more of a fashion statement , than they care for where the movement was made. If it keeps the time right , it's good enough , isn't it ? I can't afford super expensive watches , but I do like both my Invictas, just as much as I like my Citizen,TW Steel and my Bulova , I like my Tissot a little less , cause I prefer big case watches , and it is only 42 mm , but with that being said - the most durable watch I have is a $60 G-shock ... so ... I'd agree if your video was strictly about the quality of movement , but deciding for other people what is ugly or not is totally wrong. Oh , and I've had both my Invictas for over 7 years now , and apart from changing batteries , I've had no other issues ( and that G-Shock has been through hell and it's still running like a champ. The strap is starting to give out though , which is totally understandable , other than that - not a problem with it. )

Invicta is a historical watch company that was founded in Switzerland in 1837, and was very well respected in watchmaking. The company was bought by a US based company in the early 1990's and that is the Invicta we know of today. Some of their recent models aren't the best in looks but comparing their quality to any kickstarter watch is disrespectful to a watchmaking company with as much history & heritage as them. Most of their automatic models have japanese automatic movements with durable stainless steel cases that are heavy. Even the water resistance is not bad on them (i can only say that about the Pro diver, don't really have any of the other ones).

About fashion watches, they're so much cheaper at the grocery store or pharmacy. You can get a nice looking dress watch for $10. It's kinda hilarious how they cost so much more online. I think it's a fair deal, considering that it should last 1~2 years until the battery runs out. Most cheap quartz watches last 1~2 years.

Invicta is not a Kickstarter company nor a fashion brandand it has been around since 1837. It is an American watch company but based in Switzerland. You are right about that they used Seiko or Swiss movements. And also yes, you can get a Seiko or Citizen for the same price but Seiko or Citizen will never give you the rugged cases that Invicta does for the $100 price point. I own a $150 Seiko 5 with no bezel with a 21-jewel movement. But if I pay $150 for an Invicta I can get the Pro Diver or even the Grand Diver with a 24-jewel and a solid case with an unidirectional bezel.

+Edd Lanuza Hi :) Great too hear that my videos have helped! Good question. I think that Fossil stands for the production of watches from MK, BB etc. And I would say that Fossil and MK, BB watches are equal in quality in general. But Fossil do have some decent watches that are "Swiss Made". On sale I have seen some of them go for around $250. For that price they are the cheapest watches with the STP1-11 movement. The STP1-11 is a great automatic movement(clone of the ETA2824 but considered a bit more accurate in the standard grade from what I have heard) that is owned by the Swatch group. They also own Fossil. In general I would say that Fossil is a typical fashion brand and that you should stay away from them. But honestly I would rather buy a Fossil then a MK as MK are even more overpriced. So if you find a Fossil with the STP1-11 for a really good price and you think the watch is good looking, I would consider it. Otherwise I think the money is better spent elsewhere. Regards GAW

Fashion watches are just that. Fashion. For the rest of us enthusiasts, we know what to buy and at what price. The cheapest watch I own is a 1954 Longines tank with a 9L movement. I paid 385.00 and for that I got a super movement with class and style. I'd go as low as Tissot as far as brand is concerned. They don't all have to include in house movements, but I prefer them. The last watch I bought was a 1966 Omega Constellation with a 561 movement. Not a pie pan, but at 1,200.00 I got a world class calibre that has proven itself over the last 5 decades and more. And it was in excellent shape because it was loved and taken care of. The more the initial investment, the more likely that care will follow.

Same with these retarded "designer" or "fashion" brands like Supreme or Obey or Comme des garçons or some idiocy like that, where you just stamp your stupid logo on something and it costs 10x more One buys a Versace pair of sunglasses and they get a general low quality product, where they could get something much better if they looked beyond brand name and actually did their research

Some thing that it's not mentioned here is that, some of the designer watch brands are produced by a watch company, like Swatch Group with Calvin Klein or the Timex Group with GC, Guess and Versace, and others. In their Swiss Made version the movement is a Ronda or ETA, and some time its prices are very cheap!.

investment? I stick to Casio, especially the Gschock ones. $50-$100 dollars, and they'll be with you forever as long as you have a battery and band in your closet. the dw-6900bd-8t shock given to me in 1995 still works perfectly up to now. 22 years and all I needed is to change the battery every 2 years and the strap every 7 years.
