In this video, we take a look at a selection of watches, all under $1,000, that I would consider to be icons in the industry. These watches set themselves apart through their historical significance, reverence, design prowess, or innovation earning them that icon status. We look at watches from Seiko, Casio, G-Shock, and Hamilton, just to name a few. What other watches have earned the title of ‘Icon’?

Hey All, thanks for watching. At 6:36 I accidentally said Hamilton is no longer based in Switzerland when I very clearly meant to say the United States. Sorry for the confusion. This video proves you don't need thousands of dollars to build a beautiful collection. Couldn't agree more with Teddy. Value of a watch is proportionate to how it makes you feel when you look at your wrist, be it a 20 USD Casio or an high end AP.

Doxa Sub 200 (1967) Q Timex (1979) Seiko SKX007 (1996) even if you mentioned the Turtle, the SKX is iconic itself Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Diver (1995 or 96)

I have had the SSC813 for a while but have not been wearing it too often because it’s supposed to not require wrist time to keep running unlike the mechanical ones. Just gave it some more wrist time this week and it’s actually growing on me, the sporty bezel and pushers give a very sporty vibe, although the brushed top and polished side finishes are quite odd.

I'd say the first omission would be the Casio AE1200WH a.k.a. the Casio Royale. The modding community has embraced this $30. copy of a Seiko G757, which was worn by Roger Moore in the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy and turned it into a bit of a subculture of it's own. I have a AE1200WH-1A that I've easily taken apart, scrubbed almost ALL that janky-looking lettering off except for the Casio name with 91% Isopropyl alcohol and a Q-Tip, then filled the case with silicone oil before reassembly and I replaced the band with a really nice blue leather with tan twine stitching, Ritche watchband I paid $20 for on Amazon. It's so cool! 😎👍 I get a LOT of compliments on it and it's actually a much more interesting conversation piece because of what it is, than the same common Rolex you see all the time that needs no introduction.

For my birthday my wife bought me a SEIKO SSC913P1. It's a lovely watch, it looks great and it does what it needs to do very well but sadly, even at 41.4mm it looks a little small on my 8" wrist and doesn't quite sit right. I now have my eye on a 44mm from Longines.

@eossoon
@eossoon 8 күн бұрын
My pick for the two g shocks would be the 5600 series and the 6900 series over the 9052 series. I choose the 6900 because it also was issued to the military and was also one of the few watches to receive a NATO stock number, but made a much larger impact in the civilian sphere - especially in the realm of fashion. Everybody from Pharrell to Justin Bieber to Spike Lee had on the 6900!
@eossoon
@eossoon 8 күн бұрын
Also, the picture at 11:09 was likely of the 6600 series, not the 9052! The 6600 was discontinued, and the 9052 replaced it in 2010 as a watch given to new SEALs during training.

I meant to comment on your previous video "Reacting to the 50 Most Important Watches of all Time", specifically to your inclusion of the Glycine Airman, a watch I love and own and one that I've championed for several years now. As a pilot for over 50 years and flying professionally for over 40, I wore a 1983 Rolex Pepsi GMT for most of my career, and 32+ years as my "one" watch. In 2018 when my one pilot owned Pepsi [complete full set] was appraised for ridiculous money, I purchased an Airman, 42mm Base 22 model as my everyday working/flying watch. Thank you for helping to champion this unloved classic.

The watch that introduced me to this world was the Hamilton Khakhi field "Murph". I was watching Interstellar and fell in love with the watch and then I started following the watch world. I'm so glad you mentioned Glycine. I think they're one of the most underrated brands out there. I work on the ocean in the North Pacific, and I've been wearing a bronze combat sub in some of the harshest environments imaginable. It has taken everything that the elements can throw at it, from snow and freezing ocean spray to hard knocks and scrapes. It's supremely comfortable, tough, has great lume and keeps excellent time. I also own an Airman and it is a timeless classic that can be worn with just about anything and look great. Keep up the great work Teddy, you're responsible for initiating a great many of us into the watch collecting community.

@OleMisss I love the seiko spd453 but when I saw the price i changed my mind. I can't justify spending 1300 dollars on a seiko. The ssc813 is a little better but still about 800 for a seiko is crazy. I'm used to seiko being a 150 to 300 tops for automatic mechanical watches. These new prices 670 to 1800 is insane. I mean for these prices I'd go tissot a swiss made movement good quality and good name. Tissot is more known as a good luxury entry level swiss watch while seiko is usually known as a macys special 150 dollar watch. I mean don't get me wrong amazing time pieces but not for 600 or 1300 dollars. That's insane.

You know Teddy so badly wanted to put the Junghans Max Bill on this affordable iconic list.

I like the Khaki Field Mechanical, but haven't purchased it because I believe the 47mm lug to lug is too long for the 38mm watch.

I think the Tag Heuer f1 needs a mention (although it's over budget) for me & many others it was the gateway watch into collecting.

I have several of these and love them all, but another watch I learned about on KZbin and just got and fell in love with is the Casio Royale. It is weird, it is nerd chic, it is completely unique, the screen makes no sense… but I LOVE it. Far better than an F91 for about the same price, still under $20. I have since learned there is a HUGE, ridiculous online community of fans of that specific watch, with TONS of cool/unique mods. For a $19 watch. 😂 I like it better than my F91, my DW5600, and my CasiOak.

Very interesting video. I'm slowly getting into collecting, it seems as if a lot of older guys like me buy watches at the mall and are not interested in the history or collecting. Except for the casio duros and gshocks that I wear because of my rugged lifestyle. I am skipping Bulova and Citizen due to so many clueless mall people wearing them

Hey teddy i hope you read this! I love this watch and it was the reason i started collecting. My issue is that my chrono second hand now sits at the 4 second mark. The more i use the chrono the more it “creeps forward” little by little. i dont know what to do, do you have any suggestions? Could it have been magnetized or is there an internal part that’s broken?

The problem and answer is dependent on the type of watch and movement. For a mechanical watch that is not normal so it could he a variety of issues. It could be an issue involving the reset lever since you mentioned it being gradual creep. 4 o’clock is not an insignificant misalignment. This would be a question for a watchmaker that will need to try to diagnose the problem. If it is a quartz watch, you are in better luck as many quartz chronographs have a recalibration feature where you can move the hands to get aligned without any additional work.
