Good luck winding lining up the gears with the different apertures.😢😊 Note to vlogger the wires that attach the Dynamo to the motor will detach if they are not located and isolated carefully.

Came for the resin printing, but I really enjoy these timekeeping videos. Question - do you ever find the problem with a quartz watch/clock being the crystal itself? Many years ago I did hobbyist level experimentation with creating timekeeping circuits and firmware. In trying to squeeze as much accuracy as possible out of the project I fell down the rabbit hole of testing and cherry-picking 32.768khz crystals for accuracy. I should dig out some of those old circuits to see if crystal aging has had any effect in 20-25 years. Always wondered if crystal aging/drift was a problem watchmakers had to deal with. Just thinking out loud.

I fully disassembled the gears and inspected for damage and dirt. Didn’t see anything. Put it all back together but it still doesn’t turn the hands. I see the upper gears turning but the hands don’t move. The outer black gear to set the time is hard to turn, which I suspect is keeping the hands from turning. When I take out a gear in the system everything spins freely. How can I figure out which part is making it stick?

@watchesandjewelry3 жыл бұрын
You either have a hand that is pressure fit or one with a small nut. Use the setting wheel in back to move the hour hand to 3:00. Then check to see if you need to push down carefully on the minute hand. If there is a small nut, turn the nut clockwise to tighten down the hand

If it is an older mechanical movement I would have to see it. Newer versions are quartz and only se a variety of movements. If newer and a battery did not work to get the clock up and running then a new movement would be recommended. Cost to service a mechanical clock is approximately 170.00 but may be higher if there are major parts replaced. Battery versions may be around 45.00 to 60.00 for a new clock movement.

Do you know why the chime will not sound on my quartz battery operated clock? I hear the 'click' sound at the top if the hour but the chime does not sound. What do you think the problem is? The click keeps good time. Thank you!
@watchesandjewelry3 жыл бұрын
Quartz chime clocks have one major flaw in most of them. If you reset the time by turning the hands counter clockwise, you run the risk of bending or breaking the internal mechanism that the clock uses to make the electronic connection to set off the chime. Once that happens, it usually isn’t worth fixing. Most manuals, if the clock included one specify exactly how to set the time. Almost always, using the setting knob in the back of the clock and turning it clockwise. This is a perfect o Ken I have seen for many years, especially in the fall when we set clocks back one hour.

It has been a while, but here goes. That little metal cylinder contains a quartz crystal tuning fork that oscillates at 32,768 times per second. That is 2 to the 15th power oscillations per second. That is divided down by 2 in a silicon chip 15 times, which gives you one pulse per second. that same chip has a logic circuit that produces a pulse only when the last few divide stages are all in the same state. So you get one narrow pulse each second. That drives the coil of a stepping motor, i.e. a motor that moves one step per pulse. From there it is all gears to slow down enough to drive the second hand, then the minute hand and finally the hour hand.

Sounds as though the gears in the clock are wearing out. I would strongly recommend a new replacement movement. Look on the back for a number on the movement itself. Also, if you replace it yourself, make sure that you get the movement that fits the hands of the clock you have. Some hands are keyed (notched) Some are round.

@danielcarroll3358 Жыл бұрын
It depends. If you have access to the hands you just pull them off vertically and gently. If you can't access the hands from the front you usually have to remove some screws on the back side. This will then allow you to remove the glass or plastic and access the hands. The movement is usually held in place by some plastic molded in clips. You gently move then to the side (one side at a time) to release the movement. Then you follow this video.

Great info for the gears, etc. Do you have any videos on troubleshooting the electronics on the board for a quartz clock? I have a German quartz movement with bell strike Seth Thomas Corsair Ships Clock, Model # 1036. Not sure of the Model # of the movement as the label faded. some #'s on the plastic housing: 52699, 19-98 CE Germany. Currently the movement keeps time well, the bell strike contacts on the circuit board activate on the hour but does not send current to actual bell strike which is separate and has pos. neg. wires to it from the circuit board. Appears that some component is not directing voltage to the bell strike after the contacts make on the circuit board. The bell strike works when I supply power to it separately. Can it be repaired?

Can u fix a seiko mechanism. Mine stopped working it has 4 leads one for battery and one to control clock melody. I'm not able to find a replacement. Well I cant find even a parts shop that Carrie's it. I was hoping someone has rebuilt em
@watchesandjewelry3 жыл бұрын
Well... This sounds like one of my favorite seiko watches I bought in the mid 80s... Although I know, seiko and citizen make watches with alarms today... If, for some reason your watch stops any alert tones i.e. melodies, alarms ect... and is older then six years, you will be hard pressed to find a working replacement. (Yes, occasionally, they show up on ebay, but rarely). If it is newer, i.e. within 1 to 5 years old, I would suggest sending it back to seiko directly or with an authorized servicer. These movements are not typically available direct to most watch service locations, and almost never directly to the end user. Seiko has an extensive retail foothold. I would find a local seiko dealer (small shop, not chain) to help you... Just keep in mind, older watches go out of production, and parts become difficult to get.
@watchesandjewelry3 жыл бұрын
Now... As far as the melody clocks... We stopped selling them when you could buy them for cost at Sam's club. Seiko does not repair them. If the clock is in warranty... One year old or newer, they will replace it direct. If not, they will tell you to buy a new one... (the reason I do not work with seiko clocks any longer)

Yes, replacing is preferably to servicing when it works, but not all movements are the same. The diameters of the shafts may vary between movements, with the net result that the old clock's hands won't fit. Too small a hole diameter in the hand may bind the concentric shafts together and then the clock won't run. Some movements have a threaded shaft surrounding the shafts for the hands, and some don't. The shafts stick out further on some movements than on others.
