Will there be a flood of GMT watches because of the Miyota 9075?

I'm a long haul airline pilot, and I certainly have a need for a GMT. I just bought a Lorier with the Miyota 9075.

Same comment goes for a wristwatch overall really..... Utility is very little to do with watch market these days. Be surprised if more than 2% of dive watches ever get wet.....

@@studoyle8185: talk to a watchmaker and see how many watches come in with waterdamage. I always bought divewatches because they are almost indestructable, not because you can dive with them. Also the dive bezel is extremely usefull in daily life, sort of poor mans chronograph, I use it while cooking for instance. But it's true noone needs an automatic, thats just for fun.

As someone who’s working with colleagues on the other side of the planet, the GMT hand is way more useful to me than day/date functions on a daily basis.

Interesting conversation, thank you! I thought I’d share one idea, we watch collectors don’t need a watch in the first place. So I suspect people will want a GMT watch simply because it’s cool. Not for any practical reason (and yet, they quite possibly will make their travel watch). For me personally, the GMT brings with it a certain romantic notion that’s just fun. And fun is why I collect watches in the first place.

I do need a watch. I can't always pull my phone out, and find it faster to glance at my watch. Also at night, I don't want to blind myself by looking at my phone. Good lume on a watch gets the job done. A GMT function is also helpful, as I work with people in multiple time zones.

1:50 ETA does have a “true” or travellers GMT movement C07.661, although fairly few watches seem to utilise it. I suppose the demand for the arguably better functionality of a travellers GMT is quite limited after all, vast majority of consumers don’t know the difference to a caller one.

Those of us that deal with computer/IT/phone/network systems often need to track events across timezones in UTC/GMT time. Same with armature radio operators, and of course, pilots. I think GMT is actually underrated as a complication. I do agree that chronographs are worthless though (lol). I just bought a citizen with a 9075. I've waited decades for this.

Wow. I can’t believe a CEO is ignorant enough to disparage the needs of the watch market because he himself doesn’t need a GMT function. Just like he said about Chronographs, and Dive watches, how many people actually need these functions? Yet these complications and features still sell and are desired by consumers.

To be fair I don’t think he’s disparaging GMTs or the market, he’s just wondering how great the demand is and therefore how well the watches will sell. He takes a financial and reputational risk with every watch he develops. From my point of view I might be tempted by a GMT as a holiday watch and for me a holiday watch can’t be flashy and attract unwanted attention

@@frogsplorer Teddy Balddessare he is not. As a CEO, I would choose my words carefully in a public forum. For a CEO in the globalized watch industry, a little ignorant. But it's his company and business opportunity to choose and lose as he leads top down. Sadly, the flashy 3 time zone Rolex GMT, and now Black Bay GMT, stays home when visiting London and Europe now that I have a Seiko 5 GMT. Fortunately, flashy is very OK for Tokyo and other Asian cities.

I wasn't disparaging the needs of the market, or anyone in it. I was simply saying that oftentimes the true demand for a product is less than the what it appears to be. Often people will say they want something, but when presented with it, they realize they don't have enough use for it or want it enough to justify actually buying it. It's got nothing to do with my own personal needs. I was simply wondering how many people truly need it. The true demand might not be enough to rationalize the investment we'd have to make in product development, production, and distribution costs.

My daughter lives in the UK and I live in Canada. I use the GMT and my Casio world time functions all the time. I think there are a lot of watch lovers who have family in other time zones! Easier than using my smartphone to figure out the difference. Nice vid guys. Thank you.

I have just watched a review of a $1000 Miyota GMT watch, very impressive, but I won't be buying because I have no use for it. I think adding the hour jump feature to a 3 hand watch would be perfect for holidays and daylight saving.

GMT's and Chronos for people who don't travel become just things to appreciate because you like them, or the history of them. Do we really need any reason other than that? If we continue that train of thought, how many of us truly NEED a mechanical watch at all?

Agreed... I have over 10 watches... do I NEED more than one or two... of course not... but I enjoy them for different reasons... there is a long supply and demand with watches... accept it... and enjoy it!

People who don’t travel a lot need a true GMT as much as a non-diver needs a 300m diver watch. Honestly I fell into a watch rabbit hole a few months back because viewing watch channels here on YT resulted in me buying way too many watches that I really didn’t need. FOMO is real, I have since sold more than half my collection and I’m way happier.

For the last 15 years I've worked at global companies so I find GMT complications very useful, I do wish that more of them could adjust to N+-0.5 hours though as for years I've worked with people in places that do not have a whole hour UTC offset. My Tudor GMT is the only one that I have with a 0.5 hour click bezel.

The Scottish brand Marloe, make a GMT with a 48 click bezel using the Japanese Miyota movement. I purchased one two weeks ago and really like the discrete and restrained bezel.

@@saksakorn1 Hi, so far, my Marloe "Night" GMT is +4.5 seconds per day and is very consistent at that, which is perfectly acceptable for a mechanical movement. It is my first time with an automatic, four weeks now, and I am enjoying it very much.

For me a GMT complication is very useful as i work with people spread over 3+ timezones on a daily basis with lots of online meetings between us, having a GMT watch is often very handy to keep track.

Guys ... spend some time in the US. One country, 5 time zones (Mainland + Hawaii). GMTs are super useful here. Even to the point where you want a rotating bezel to track a third.

Who needs the utility of a dive watch bezel? The GMT serves additional purposes, for example the 24hr hand can be used as a compass, which is pretty cool. You can also track the time in 24 hours instead of am/pm.

Guys... I see this Video is at least 7months old. but I'm floored as to How you guys are So Unfamiliar with Seiko's "True/Travelers" GMT's. They were in the Game before Citizen. I've Own 3 of them (still have two today) , dating back to 2017-18, the First being a Seiko LandMaster GMT Titanium Bullhead. the Other two were from the Presage Line 1. a 39mm Titanium Ocean Traveler , 2. 42mm Sharp Edge Green Dial GMT. All 3 have the 6R64 Movement. priced from $1300,$1500 to $1800. Those were and Still are Affordable True GMT's. Look, I sold my Omega Chronograph GMT, Tudor GMT as well as two Grand Seiko GMTs ( but I kept my GS Chronograph "GMT" Spring Drive, I love that thing). I'm Saying this to Say... Seiko brought Affordable True GMT's First. Why they didn't put the 6R64 movements in the New 200MM Diver GMT's, I don't get it. It's Within the Price Points of The New GMT Diver now.

I find it useful when traveling for work. When at home in the Uk also dealing with colleagues in the US so a quick glance at the watch tells me what time it is in NY

Funny that. I built a bronze rootbeer GMT, using a Seiko NH34. I use it ‘cause I have family abroad & can see the time they’re in in a glance. The Seiko NH34, is about €55-60, whereas the NH35 & 36, are about €30-49.

All amateur radio ('ham') contacts are logged according to UTC (aka 'GMT'), so there's a use case.

With the Miyota movement there is the possibility for a 3 hand watch with a quick set hour hand like many of the Omega watches.

loving the GMTs. Lots of people travel, or work with places in different locations. I live in HK, family is in California, and company office in Toronto. I daily track 3 timezones. Lots of people work globally and can enjoy a GMT. I really relate to the GMT hand pointing to home.

Automatics, chronographs, GMTs, all of these things are done better and more accurately with a digital watch or your phone. We love watches because they are cool and we nerd out over the movements, so yeah I’m getting a gmt

I am looking at a GMT since I fly a lot - but the choices out there are almost too many, not wanting to spend $5k on an another watch and not wanting to get an another noname watch for $500... looking for the middle ground, respectable, yet inexpensive, with a date AND a screw-down crown... which TAG Carrera GMT does not have... 😅 oh yeah, and not a diver since I have like 5 of those already

For people that are living in a different time zone than their families, the GMT is the most valuable complication you can have.

I sure hope we see a "glut"! I've got two true GMTs that I use for work ALL THE TIME. When I get home I switch to my office GMTs (ETA 2893-2 based; Fortis, Bremont, etc.). YES. I am I pilot ;-)

The chronograph analogy is flawed. People with family off-shore. They always want to track time in another time zone that they travel to at least once a year.

I think people will want a true gmt especially as they can now get it with the affordable Miyota movement. I won’t use it that much, only the occasional holiday to know what time it is at home. But even though I won’t use it more than a couple of times a year I would still rather have a true gmt than not. If it wasn’t available in an affordable movement I probably wouldn’t be as bothered but because it is then I am. It’s cool and there is no way around that.

Jumping hour hand GMTa are traveller GMTs. They will NEVER be true GMTs because there are many time zones with half-hour offsets. It is impossible to set the true GMT time with these movements!! They are NOT "true GMTs". Ironically the only pieces that can be a true GMT are caller GMTs but unfortunately most caller GMTs jump one hour. But Oris have one that jumps half an hour so that's the only true GMT on the market currently I believe.

Your just making your own definition of a “true GMT”. The generally accepted definition of a true GMT is an independent 12 hour hand
