Cusack was disappointed with their previous collaboration, Better Off Dead... (1985) and was angry with Holland. It's 'cliche' like that because it is distilled truth; a composite sketch. A thousand stories, all with common threads. It's not a single case of something like this actually happening, rather, it is every possible case of something like this ever happening. That's why we will watch it over and over again, whereas, you would never watch it if it was actually 'realistic'. You can already get that on reality TV or by reading the newspaper. That's boring and without any depth, relatability, or meta-narrative (take-away). This is actually meant to teach you something about yourself, knowingly or unknowingly. That's why we pay to go and watch such stories. So, in that sense, it is 'true', it's just a deeper, more Jungian kind of truth -- a patchwork of reality and lives. Just like The Santa Clause films, for example. The more 'cliche' it is (in a good way), the more truthful, symbolic, and psychological it is. At a certain point, this becomes 'archetypal'. (Of course, there are also horrible cliched films, and they are bad because they are only surface-level, and typically poorly made, making them cliche, but not very worthwhile. Sometimes they are self-defeating, such as comedy films that are not funny, or serious films that are not serious. That's when you tend to fall into the 'so bad it's good' realm, or 'so bad it's funny', at least.)

There's a movie out there call "Not Another Teen Movie." This movie was such a good time that I had to watch it a second time back to back. Good *Raunchy* Fun It's a parody of films I copied from a wiki. I noticed that you have watched some of these movies: She's All That is the main focus of NATM. Varsity Blues, 10 Things I Hate About You, Can't Hardly Wait, Pretty in Pink. Plus Bring It On, American Pie, Cruel Intentions, American Beauty, Never Been Kissed, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Can't Buy Me Love, Jawbreaker, Sixteen Candles, Dazed and Confused, Lucas, Rudy, The Breakfast Club, Grease, and Road Trip.

My older sisters graduated in 1996 & 1998…I graduated in 2003, so this movie was playing regularly through my High School years (1999-2003). Letters to Cleo’s cover of Cheap Trick’s _I want you to want me_ is one of the *VERY FEW* Major Market song covers which are superior to the Original… like think of Metallica’s cover of Bob Seger’s _Turn the Page…_ as great a song as Metallica’s cover is…It genuinely feels like a *COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SONG,* same goes for Darius Rucker’s cover of Old Crow Medicine Show’s _Wagon Wheel._ But, like the Atari’s cover of Don Henley’s _Boys of Summer_ it was modernized and didn’t lose the song’s core feel…. & the Atari’s were able to replace the Keyboard in _Boys of Summer,_ with Electric guitar & still were able to maintain the integrity of the song where as Metallica replaced the horn in _Turn the Page_ with electric guitar, and it totally compromised the song’s feeling & integrity…

Letters to Cleo did not and do not get the recognition they deserve.

@@purcascade Yeah, I totally agree…my main point was a commentary attempting to highlight the amount of musical genius it takes to cover a huge song like this & have it keep the songs feeling, tone & core emotion…it requires a lot of really talented musicians working together and being on the same page to be able to pull it off… _Letters to Cleo_ have Aerosmith & Beatles level chemistry… but at the same time, so did _Space Hog_ and their singer married Steven Tyler’s daughter Liv Tyler & still were 1-hit-wonders… with _In the Meantime…_

"Bernard" from The Santa Clause was actually the star of his own show, called Numb3rs, which was actually pretty good.

This (and 'She's All That') is an ur text for Xennials like me. I was seventeen when this film came out and loved it so much!

Same! I saw it over spring break of 11th grade after getting my wisdom teeth out. 😂 I was so Kat in high school. It was kinda embarrassing. This soundtrack was absolutely everything.

fun fact- Joaquin Phoenix's dance on the stairs in Joker was a tribute to Heath's stadium stairs dance. It's the same dance

Great reaction as usual. One of the most sharply written teen comedies around, and just a lot of fun. My wife still cracks me up by randomly wondering aloud if you can ever just be whelmed.

I watched this for the first time yesterday and I was taken aback by the final shot of the band on the roof because I recognised that it must've been very difficult to film and they must've had to do it right, whereas now that kind of shot would've been taken from a drone. now knowing each retake would cost $5000 absolutely shocks me.

I admit, I am not a huge fan of high school movies. Yet this one and 'Pump up the Volume' are the two exceptions and accompanied me through my teenage years

Pump Up The Volume needs to be reacted to by anyone. Also Heathers both have Christian Slater. Side note - both are high school movies.

I don’t think I was in high school yet but this was a big movie for teenagers at the time. It was the first movie I saw Heath Ledger and Julia Styles in. Heath Ledger was in an action TV show called Roar before this. Julia Styles gives a great performance in one of the seasons of Dexter.

This happens to be my ex-wife's favourite movie (we're still friends, btw). I hadn't seen it until she introduced it to me, and I'm grateful she did. I really enjoy this movie, even though it's formulaic as you mentioned. It's still so good.

Another Taming of the Shrew story is Kiss Me Kate. It's a musical from the 50s. Its a play inside the story. It's worth a watch.

When this came out and my sister rented it for the first time I acted like I hated it the whole time because "it's a girl movie" (I was 9 or 10) but I loved it. I became a fan of Ledger and Stiles and watched all of their work afterwards. I was already a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt from 3rd rock from the sun
