That palomino mare with her foal just kill me with their devastating cuteness. Another great video Rick! I also learned more about hooves by reading the other comments on here (so like the others I noticed the mare's hooves at 5:00) and watching your videos. When my wife and I were younger and were first learning to ride we learned how to clean hooves properly and so on, and did this every ride, but neither of us were taught to look for "trouble" spots or examine the hoof for overall health as all of that was left up to the farrier who visited every five weeks. Now I just wince at the thought of how little we knew and how much we have learned. Thank you again Rick for encouraging such excellent all-around horsemanship

Once again you give us such a warm and informative video and we thank you Rick. Just as I've said here and your great cop and gun channel THINK LIKE A COP you could discuss earthworms and we would so enjoy it. Please more of these foal videos because you give us such information and like you I just adore foals. A quick question Rick. Our Father bought our first horse in 1964 and she had been bred. To make this very short the foal had the same great personality of his Mom. At 14 and 13 my sister and I saddle broke him at 2 although not for ridding but just so he wouldn't be difficult to handle which he never was. They as all my horses were kept i.n pasture and the yard so had constant contact. Rick he never bit kicked or bucked his entire life and neither did his sweet Mom. He did like to taste and. feel with his baby mouth but only as a young foal. Whenever we took a blanket to sit and watch him and his Mom graze we had to take two because he would paw up one and lay on it next to us. His Mom was only three when he was born. Rick do you think their being so young is why both made such outstanding trail horses. They were put in stalls at night because we lived on a major highway and my father was afraid they might get in highway and killed. if we slept late Mom let them out and .fed them. Was all this typicalyoung horse behavior or because both were raised in our yard and constantly petted. We knew nothing of imprinting and only enjoyed them. They could go to pasture at will and did. Please don't think we were trying to dress them in anything pink lol we just loved them as the very young girls we were.

+tryto helpthem the more people contact the better for horses, kids are not as control freaks as adults,kids are not afraid to get hurt like adults are, horses trust kids more since they have not learned to so smart and sneaky and think they are so great, all of that makes a horse feels comfortable and trust more.

Thank you for all your time in answering this Rick. This has been in my mind for over 50 years as she was born in 65. Your answer also made realize that was the key to rehabing my horses especially Tasha my last. She was actually almost dangerous to be near when we first got her. In less than four months my daughter and I rode to her last stable that had banned her thus with all her problems caused her to be sold as meat price minus shipment. As we rode up one of the trainers complimented that she moved like a Tb. I then told she was Thunder Mist her pacer harness racing name. Several got really nasty as she had been standing perfectly still and so quiet not the hyped crazed horse I received. As I got down she never moved I was going to show her tatoo when a trainer hollered it was her he would recognise her very flat heels anywhere. She wore the scars on both sides of her very soft mouth from the racing bit as well the boney ridges across the top of her nose from the stud chain. She was never ridden the last 14 years of her life because I had injured my spine so I would sit with her while she ate or slept. At first i would spend entire days with her. I also saddle broke her and she never tried to hurt me the many years I had her and she died at 29. Thank you again Rick

Now I understand, I used to walk my dogs out in the country when they were able. I used to walk by a pasture of huge red horses. When they saw me they would all run to the fence, and I would feed them grass. I told them they only liked me for my grass, hahaha 🤣. One huge red horse wasn't letting me feed all of the horses, and would chase them away and I thought was being mean. Now I understand they are the leader of the group. Thank you for your teachings on horses.

I love how well you treat your horses and how much space you give them. A place around where I ride there's a cheif of police who owns three horses with 1 acre of land. He just throws the hay on the ground in their poop and gives them a small shed that barely even one horse can fit into, but because he's the cheif nobody can do anything it's horrible what people an do to such beautiful creatures

For those worried about the one mare's hooves they're not great but we have no idea about the situation. For all we know farrier came out the next day. She could be a fast grower or have thin walls. With added weight from a foal things tend to get out of hand. It could also be that she normally goes in shoes and they were pulled to protect the foal in case of an accident which is also common. Never know the full story :)
@cynthiabowers31093 жыл бұрын
I have a question after, I sold my horse and the folks bred her ( she was about 7 years) pure bred Appaloosa. I don't know what breed of stud they used but, they had to put the foal down because, it only had 3 legs. How often does this type of thing occur in any horses?

Sassy mama is so pretty :D That's her name now. I've never really spent time with horses, I never realized how much they communicate or that they really even did. It's very subtle but I get it! ( they're kind of like big dogs!...kind of)

How cute! I just went and looked at baby horses the other day! Hey Rick, may I ask, what is a good way to tell mares and stallions apart other than the obvious?
@louisegreen52282 жыл бұрын
Stallions have bigger cheeks and crests (necks) than mares and because of their testosterone, they also have shinier coats. (But always double check underneath for confirmation, haha). Another more subtle way if they’re further away and playing, is that the stallion can rear up and stay upright for longer than the mares (or geldings). This is because of their centre of gravity.
