Great reaction to this classic! I find it interesting that many reactors assume that Sue & Tommy were part of the evil prank... their kindness toward Carrie (as well as Miss Collins' genuine care) adds to the bittersweet tragedy of Carrie's life. If only they had reached out to Carrie before their senior year in high school...

There's some question on Sue's motives as to whether she's genuinely trying to help Carrie or just feel better about herself, but she's definitely not in on the prank. A lot of the book is Sue's memoir later on, and she is definitely horrified. Of course, none of them took into account what Carrie's homelife was like. (And, to be fair, she writes the memoir because, in-universe-she and Tommy get the blame from the public.

Sue and Tommy were never part of the plot. In the novel, Chris found the ballot that had Carrie and Tommy's name on it and came up with the plan. Sue really wanted to atone for what happened during the shower scene, and Tommy actually started having feeling for Carrie.

It is always so disappointing when someone doesn't get that this is the case. To me, it's always been so obvious and I could never figure out why it was confusing,

I love how everyone wrongly thinks Sue and Tommy are setting Carrie up.

Agreed. There are so many subtle (and not so subtle) clues that Sue and Tommy are genuine and not part of the plot. Sue looks so guilt-ridden when the teacher’s chastising all of them and Tommy refuses to join in on the laughing when the English teacher mocks Carrie’s “It was beautiful” statement about his poem, seeming disgusted by the teacher’s teasing.

It would have been much easier to feel gleeful and satisfied if everyone at the prom had been laughing. In the end it’s a look at the cycle of cruelty - in the end everyone suffers, including the innocent.

That's not a figure of Jesus in the prayer closet, it's Saint Sebastian. Tommy is meant to have been killed instantly when the bucket hit his head. Basically the entire senior class is immolated. In the novel Carrie pretty much destroys the entire town. The 2002 version shows a bit of that. The 2013 version shows destruction in the gym but then basically you see everyone running outside just needing a band-aid and a breath of air.

That IS Jesus on the Crucifix in the prayer closet and not St Sabastian. St. Sebastian was ordered to be killed by arrows for converting his fellow Roman soldiers to Christianity. He was left for dead by the archers but was rehabilitated by a pious widow. Following his recovery, he presented himself to Diocletian and was subsequently beaten to death.

1. Stephen King threw this book away, but his wife took it out and told him to send it in. It's the first one that sold to a legitimate publisher that wasn't adult pulp and the first to be adapted into a movie. 2. Back then teachers were allowed to strike a student if warranted. (Class of 1979) 3. Sissy and Piper Laurie were both nominated for Acadamy Awards, but horror didn't get love back then. 😭😭 4. Norma/PJ Soles, As long as I have a face....😝😈 (she has to ace that ballcap) 5. Sue, Tommy and Miss Collins really were trying to help Carrie. I read the book. 6. If Billy's a high school student, so am I. 7. Margaret's crucifixion pose is the same as the St. Sabastian. 8. In the book half the town burns. No budget for that here 9. The only thing good in the second LOSER remake is Carrie/Chloe Grace Moretz could get it. (King remakes are 0/10) Including "IT" and "The Stand".

I think the reason that Norma never takes off her baseball hat is because she has a bald spot on her head.

This is important. I'm a gay American and some of the "sex education" parents are objecting to in our public schools IS absolutely inappropriate for students, the material in question goes WAY BEYOND just reassuring kids who might be gay or something else that it happens and it's no big deal, and I take serious issue with the way LGB people have been made an excuse for sexualizing kids. (Note: My understanding is that public school here means private school in the UK and vice versa.) Yes, a lot of those parents are conservative or religious, and some may even be homophobic, but they're also 100% right to be offended by what their children are being exposed to in school and well within their rights to object. I object for my own reasons. One of the books in question includes INSTRUCTIONS for getting on an Adults Only (18+) gay hookup app, presumably so they can meet adults illegally for casual sex, which isn't a scene I want gay youth routed into as if it were just normal and what we all do - at that age all they need to know about those apps is that they're illegal for minors and why they can be risky even for adults so they at least know to take precautions if they eventually get into that sort of thing. Many of the books in question contain passages that can't be read aloud in school board meetings without getting shut down because they ARE basically pornographic in nature - explicit, prurient in tone and frequently depictions of aberrant sexuality. (I'm also pro-porn, for the record, but not in the public schools.) They're also being introduced to ideology around sexuality that a lot of LGB and transsexual people strongly object to - I'm one of them. Grooming and sexualizing kids doesn't help us. If you don't believe me about the graphic and inappropriate nature of these books YT is full of interesting videos of them being read aloud in school board meetings all over the country - some of them will curl your hair. Public school sex education needs to focus on biology, contraception, disease prevention and general safety, including on line safety, trafficking and abuse prevention. Since access to pornography and consumption habits have changed a lot since I was young maybe there are things they need to know about porn and how it can potentially affect people, since they WILL encounter it. A lot of the "education" they're being exposed to also normalizes kink, something else I'm also personally into, but normalizing paraphiliae to kids is foul. There's furthermore an element of ideological pseudoscience woven into all of this that I have to denounce to on grounds of indoctrination. This is "representation" I never asked for. All that advanced sexual stuff I was able to educate MYSELF on later. It wasn't a big deal. I didn't need to hear about butt plugs and bondage in the 8th grade. Grooming kids in the name of LGB rights DOES NOT HELP US. Just treat kids who may have non-standard sexualities like everyone else, let them develop however they're going to develop WITHOUT trying to influence them (which is what these radical teachers and administrators are attempting to do) and teach kids not to bully people just because they're different. School libraries have always been curated for age appropriateness. If the kids want explicit materials or advanced sexual information they can go to the regular library like I did, but they won't because it's all on line now. Some of the crap they're pushing resembles (ILLUSTRATED!) Kama Sutra for Dummies, and removing that from public school libraries does not violate my rights as a gay person. I hate being the excuse for getting inappropriate with people's kids - all it will do is is inspire hatred and justifiable rage. There's scandal breaking that's actually a lot worse than just what I've mentioned here, and it's only just beginning to emerge into the public consciousness as the first wave of victims come of age and start talking. Transing the Gay Away is a homophobic atrocity that's about to become the worst medical scandal since the Tuskegee experiment.

Ehh the school sho**ing parallel you drew is weird. I’ve seen this movie multiple times and never saw it that way. I’m American and it makes me think that topics like these are a bit too much on your mind as a Brit. Also, the uk has school disasters too.
@mxmxpr

That parallel IS weird. If one wants to go down that road, then hunt down the novel "Rage," which Stephen King published as Richard Bachman and ultimately pulled off the market. "Carrie" is basically a dark Cinderella story and should just be taken as is.

King himself has made the comparison, actually--he referred to her as a female version of Dylan Klebold, and said he was still uncomfortable with her.

Saint Sebastian... the "gay" saint. Come on guys, just because Mrs. White doesn't have a twinky version of him like most of the art about him, doesn't make him Jesus ^^

Thanks, Will. 🩸 I adore this movie. 🔸 Sue and Tommy were not in on the prank... but it seems many younger viewers miss that the first time around. 🔸 The opening theme music by the legendary *Pino* *Donaggio* was repurposed recently at the end of BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE (2024).

I've noticed that a lot of younger people don't seem to be able to read facial expressions as well as people from the 20th century. Sue clearly telegraphs guilt at the end of the shower scene and shame as the girls get dressed down in PE class.
