I actually graduated from the school on which the film and fictional school were based. The scriptwriter graduated there before me. The film will always have a special place in my heart.

Funny thing about about Robert Sean Leonard (Neil): He later portrayed a doctor in the TV show “House”. I personally see that portrayal as an alternate universe Neil whose father approved of his acting and didn’t push him to s.

Neal's dad thinks he's protecting his son by giving him the best education possible. He can't/doesn't realise that Neal needs to be allowed to choose his own path.

You seem like a very kind and genuine person. I enjoyed your reaction to this beautiful film. The first time I saw this movie, I was so happy for Neil at the end of the play I naively thought that after seeing him on stage, Neil's dad would come around and br proud of his son. It was absolutely crushing when he did the opposite. I understand why he felt he was trapped and why he felt so hopeless.

@@wwhn i actually once read the theory that Neil's acting is a metaphor for his homosexuality and that's why his father's inability to accept him is so extreme to him, especially back then. It fits the dialogue between him and Mr. Keating very well and also explains the romantic tension between him and Todd (in my opinion)

Surprisingly, I’ve never seen this movie, so I’m going to wait until I’ve had a chance to watch it before I watch the video, but as it happens the screenwriter based the story on a teacher he had when he went to school in Nashville at Montgomery Bell Academy, which is literally a mile away from my home and where one of my closest friends works. So I guess I really need to make a point to watch the movie.

24:04 idk if you’re aware but there’s a deleted scene where todd and neil were reciting lines for the play at the lake/dock and here we see todd running towards that same spot while calling out his name😢😢😢 I wish they kept that scene in for more context. Todd loved neill. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJCsg4GElL2thtUsi=zkz09ZU7PPe9Zj1l ( 7:07 timestamp)

I also watched the movie recently and it really moved me. I kind of interpreted Neil and Todd relationship as romantic compared to their relationship with Nuwanda. The fact the movie is mainly about defying what is expected of you by society and parents didn't help. It was heartbreaking to see you cry and I really enjoyed this reaction. Thank you !

I watched the movie (its been on my to watch list for so long) and then immediately watched your reaction. Like it wasn't enough to be destroyed I also had to be destroyed twice by watching you get destroyed 😭 - but I'm the same, parents like this make me sooo insanely mad, to literally drain the life and light out of child and then have the audacity to feel satisfaction about it because you did you "duty" is some next level of 'root of all evil'. The world wouldn't be as broken as it is, if parents didn't break their children right out of the damn womb. And while I was wrecked by Neil taking his life, I also felt him cause like, he refused to hand his life over to his parents for any longer. And while there were probably other ways out, for that poor baby in the depths of all that emptiness... if the exit sign is your only source of light, you'll take it.

Yes, I agree! That baby felt it was his only way out and it’s so sad because his mother and father collectively failed him. Ugh, I wanted so much more for him. He was so smart and talented!

the walking and the standing on the desk has always stuck with me. I was never one to fall in line with others or do the norm. I think and hope it's easier nowadays, as individuals are respected more and allowed to think for themselves. It also stuck with me how devastated his friends were. I've never seen you react before but I wished you had someone to give you a hug or a plushie to hold for what I knew was coming next and you didn't. hope you enjoyed it a little for the lessons it left us with.

Poetry seems impenetrable and pretentious and boring from the outside (and _most_ of it is, fo sho) but, dig a little Blake if you will: Every Night & every Morn Some to Misery are Born Every Morn and every Night Some are Born to sweet delight... _Some_ are Born...to sweet delight Some are Born to Endless Night I mean...right? Poetry (when it 🔥 s) bridges the gap between words and Truth, because common words fail.

Agreed that sampling poetry can really lend insight and appreciation. For me just beginning to appreciate poetry after listening to Poetry RX: How 50 inspiring poems can heal and bring joy to your life by Norman Rosenthal MD. The author reviews the poem, a bit about the poet and the context the poem was written in. Beautiful and agree with other respondant that fron there I moved to the series Dickenson which is fabulous too for it's story lines, acting and especially tying in contemporary music to the poems. Listening to the poems 3 times was the key to me, even if it is just listening to yourself or Audible. Finally have time in life to relax and enjoy.
