Friends season 5 and the hiatus between 4 and 5 to decide and commit the first 2/3rds of that season 5 to Chandler and Monica is fascinating lore and a crucial groundbreaking moment in sitcom television history. From the advent of the situation comedy in the 50's with The Honeymooners all the way up to as insanely late in the game of modern times as we know them in 1998-99, all American sitcoms produced in these decades followed a prevailing wisdom and general golden rule set in the early 1960's by I Love Lucy, which was that it was wildly assumed, without any actual evidence or proof to back this seemingly arbitrary claim up that the entire industry just accepted as gospel, was that every episode of any produced show, but especially sitcoms, had to be self-contained and all dramas and story lines had to be cleared up and resolved by the end of every single said episode by the end credits and no shows could reference previous ones or any overly deep dive exposition dumps into the series continuity and backstories which the collective understanding in Hollywood was bringing up past narratives or eras where the characters were in different scenarios or romantic partners than the episode you were currently watching would confuse and therefore alienate potential audiences and thus lose syndication value or licensing fee brand worth and resell potential. So this set in stone the very limiting creative restrictions for all tv shows where all lead characters pretty much had to remain the same with almost zero character development or external growth in their careers or change of scenery ever from where they lived so if any regional market that bought the license fee to syndicate the series sometimes would and will air episodes and seasons all out of order at random like they were put on some random shuffle playlist or something. So by keeping these shows and their worlds and universes that got build out and established lore and mythos created to establish that series foundation and base setting would be escapist entertainment comfort food that you could always count on to be like a burger or coffee franchise chain that'd make it exactly the same way every time no matter where you picked up from of what day you tuned in regardless of episode, without any overly complicated plot lines or deeply layered character nuances to make audiences have to think or possibly change the channel so that was the death of any real creativity or imagination for creators in writer's room to have any real exploration or internal depth really ever for the duration of any show's run, thus everything and everybody just wound up back where they started eventually. I Love Lucy in early 1960's was the first television series to create the revolutionary business model of using their entire library of all it's previous aired episodes and selling them to different markets into syndication thus creating the lucrative invention of The Rerun. It's all profit and still the industry standard for any long running series to make bank, which the all around sweet spot for when the rights holder of said series can begin to license out their whole canon of content is usually the bare minimum of at least one-hundred episodes which more or less took four and a half to five full season runs of a show to achieve that magical number where then rights holders can make not just crazy syndication money, but stupid crazy syndication money. But there was always that industry standard stigma of never having any season long story arcs or one long running plot that you had to watch in sequential order because if you did such a thing it supposedly would make simple brain American tv watchers everywhere be lost and unable to watch this agent of chaos Mad Hatter arbitrary way of producing television storylines of any expanded nature whatsover. Then Friends ended on a season four cliffhanger rug pull of epic proportions revealation where we witness the plot twist of Chandler and Monica found in bed together where they clearly have leveled up to now more than Friends. The writers though had only the intention of it being a one and done hook up thing between these two characters just to have a wild blow everybody's mind hole moment to cliffhanger on and leave viewers all summer to build up hype and suspense for the season 5 premiere where then the gand return from London and Chandler and Monica return to just being Friends, again following televison tradition of seemingly upsetting the applecart of a show's universe, but quickly resetting it back to one. But then the Live studio audience that witness this iconic tv moment went absolutely bat-shit for this shipping and wouldn't stop applauding and going crazy showing their total 100 percent in approval of this couple being a lasting union. The showrunners said this completely caught them off guard and they had no idea just how much fans really, really wanted this and so they did an impromtu Q and A after asking the audience if they wanted this one night stand abroad wild adventure of molten lust between two beloved characters to actually continue on when the show returned the characters back to the states and the familiar show settings of the two apartments and central perk. There was not one audience member in that show's taping that night that said no. It was put to a vote by show of hands unananimously by everyone including crew members they wanted this relationship to not only not end, but be an instant permenantly established thing and make them the anti-Ross and Rachel where they wouldn't be toxic and would grow together as a couple and be a true team that would have bizaree week to week conflicts that could normally create manufactured drama and the whole all too familar troupe of on again, off again in all series between their It Couple for years and years. Not these two. But they had to alter course on the fly to listen to the people and make this a reality. Because the writer's room had a whole different vision and plotline for season 5 that immediately got not thrown out, but put away to start from scratch brain storming where and exactly how to take this new couple development between Chan and Mon. The original plotline they shelved would get repurposed and tweaked to be used eventually later on seasons down the line rewritten for Rose and Rachel. But they said the Eureka moment was deciding to make their relationship a secret from the rest of the gang and slowly how one by one another Friend finds out over the course of the season. They wanted to drag it out the entire season, but the network said they were already pushing their luck doing it at all and it was a gamble that might screw up future earnings if the theory of long running plots would turn syndication viewers away. Long story short, the opposite happened. Turns out, reruns in order with a long recurring storyline hooks new generation of young viewers and keeps them tuning in to see what happens next, just like the first time they aired and hooked viewers, But old viewers kept tuning in too to rewatch and relive favorite episodes and seasons thus putting to bed forever single self contained episodic tv forever as every series therefore on followed the Friends season 5 structure after and continues to this day.
