Probably my favorite episode of this season, and maybe even one of my favorites in the series to be honest
So many characters get their moment in this one
Arya and the Hound
Arya and.... Gendry
Theon and Sansa
Theon and Bran
Jamie and Brienne
Brienne and Tormund
Jamie and Tyrion
Sam and Jorah
The Nights watchmen
Its a very warm the heart kind of episode and we absolutely loved it
As the last episode leading up to the biggest battle these characters have had to face, they nailed it!

I had the opposite reaction…Dany is kingdom hungry. The north has fought for their own freedom and are willing to be Allies. Dany’s reaction to learning who Jon is makes us see she doesn’t want the throne for Targaryens…she wants it for herself, and she wants it ALL. Remember Sam’s question to Jon…”You gave your life for your people…would she do the same?” It’s a good question! Her reaction gives us the answer. Dany was the one being obstinate.

I agree with you. We also bear in mind that Dany considers herself some sort of heaven sent messiah. She's been barely restrained by her advisers throughout the entire show from making rash decisions repeatedly.

Of all the things that happened in this episode, Jaime knighting Brienne is the one that makes me tear up the most. She has deserved to be a knight more than any current or future knight in the entire seven kingdoms, and we all know it.

It also appears to complete her story arc. She finally got the one thing she really wanted so very badly that she hadn't really thought about what she'd do next. Her life was complete and now she could die.

Woukd you believe that I loved this season (even with a few mistakes and negatives I noticed), maybe it was the best season if GoT, until I read post season comments and reviews that ruined it for me. SPOILERS AHEAD Episode 8x3 was the best fantasy episode I have ever seen, I still get chills when I remember the first time watching it. At first glance it was perfect except for the initial battle strategy and sending Dothraki as a cavalery first to their death.... everybody knows you use cavalery to flank weakened units from behind. Then episode 8x5 was the second best for me, it had many memorable scenes and moments, the only thing I hated was how easy Daenerys crushed the city... like in previous episode her dragon easily died from a few anti-dragon crossbow mega spears, the city is surrounded by crossbows, Euron's fleet has hundreds of ships with crossbows, and yet Daenerys goes completely yolo on them and burns them like nothing. I didnt really mind the ending, I think the happy end with Bran becoming a king fits the overall story lines, I just wished there was a last scene with Podrick pushing Bran on a wheelchair leaving the councel meating, and while zooming at Brans face, he shows a tiny grin face smile and his eyes turn blue for a couple seconds followed by final credits... It could have been so awesome if the "Bran is now a new night king fan theory" turned out to be true.

No spoilers: The way the season ended made sense. There were plenty of things pointing to it earlier on (especially in seasons 2-4). However the way that it was executed (written, directed etc) bothered me. It was blatantly rushed and often felt forced. It could have been done better if the showrunners hadn't been in a hurry to get it over and done with so they could go off and work on a new show.

The way everyone either pleaded with/looked to a Stark (Sansa, Bran) or Stark adjacent (Jon) for permission these past two episodes just further solidifies that while they have “accepted” Dany as their new ruler, House Stark are their leaders: -Ser Brienne pleads with Sansa and Jon agrees with her decision to keep Jamie alive and not kill him; -Theon asks for Sansa’s permission to fight for Winterfell and goes against their original strategy and instead wants to fight for Bran waiting for his permission to defend him; -The man who is with Sansa (I forgot his name) when Daenerys spoke to her only left the room after receiving permission from Sansa even though Daenerys is his queen. They never had to SAY that Daenerys and House Targaryen are not welcome or they are not taken as true leaders in the North, all these interactions and little moments where everyone looks to House Stark in order to move forward says all that needs to be said.

With all the nods and callbacks this episode is basically a hour long homage to the throwback moments of the show. It's like a farewell tour. I vaguely remembered it for being slow, but on rewatches I've kinda grown fond of it, as it gets me sad and nostalgic for the memorable journey we've had. It tugged the heartstrings much better than what I initially remembered. Pod's Jenny of Oldstones sets the mood. The Night Before Winter.

Sansa's being obstinate?? Addie herself noticed Dany's 'snarling' reaction at Jon's revelation at the end. She wasn't upset at all at the prospect of what Jon's parentage would mean for the future of their relationship. She was all about her claim to the throne... as she always has been.

Brienne being knighted is one of the best moments in the series. So earned and valid. Jaimie doing it just made me weep when it first aired - still get tears. LoL your face when Arya was "becoming a woman" made me giggle. Ages were 18 & 23 for Arya & Gendry, so not that big of a difference, especially in a time period setting where girls are usually married soon after their periods start between 13-15.

The north declared independence and is literally fighting for it since season 1. I don't understand how people don't understand why they wouldn't just give it up and accept a Targaryen queen who is obsessed with power and burns people alive. They've been there, done that already.

The praise you gave was well merited. This is a great episode as a lead-in to the battle. The almost unnerving calmness all through out actually accentuates the impending calamity better than anything else would've done. The way you can feel that things are about to come down to a cresendo deserves all the credit. Brienne's knighting alone packs in more authentic emotion than any contrived satisfying moments in your fav tv shows could've ever done, because it's achieved by an unbroken character thread that spins 7 seasons. The silent depth expressed in that Jon Dany scene blows all your exceedingly witty main character verbal jousting 'big moments' of every great tv show out of the water. Sam and Jorah, Theon and Sansa, Greyworm and Missandei, Jon Sam and Ed as the last of the Night's Watch, Jenny of Oldstones...it keeps going! THAT moment in the Crypt, the horn as we cut to black...Yep, that's a lifetime's worth of sentimental anguish if you've grown to love these characters over the seasons. Which granted not everyone had because they were too busy fantasizing about Stannis Dah Mannis putting ointment on Jon's scars. Has to be the right number of scars bro. Gosh it's nice to have people who're not emotionally vacant drones. If this was an episode of another show there's no question in my mind it would be well-received.

I've never understood why some people have issues with Arya getting sex in a potentially death situation and they didn't have issues for a kid becoming a killer, which to be honest, if we're talking about morals and principles, it's really messed up! And the other thing, let's say she had 15 or 16, well in our history, in the 1600's or even before that period, people used to get marry at the age or 12 or 15 so it makes sense that this people in this fantasy world, they didn't have our social standards. And she had a crush on him when she met him, so to her, he wasn't an older brother, but... whatever. Now, the important thing is... You guys have reached to The Long Night!!!! #EpicEpisodeEpic

I think mostly is because of the actress, Maisie Williams. She still looks SO tiny and child-like. Of the main cast from season 1, she doesn't look like she aged very much into adulthood. Hell, even Bran looks like he grew up into a man, and seems like he's older than Arya. So like, in people's minds, Arya is still a kid, but much more, people think the actress is still underage so LOTS of people had issue with that. The night this episode aired, one of the top google searches was "Maisie Williams Age", and she was in fact 18 at the time.

For me, it was the casting. There is I think a 9 year age difference between the actors. Maisie was a young teen when they first appeared together in season 1 and Dempsie was a man in his twenties. If there were only a couple years difference between them, it wouldn't be so cringe. It doesn't bother me that Arya had sex. It bothers me that she had sex with someone who was already a man when she crushed on him while so young. I am interested to see what happens with Sansa and The Hound in the books. But I am so glad they didn't go that route with them in the show. Rory McCann did a terrific job and helped make The Hound my favorite show character, but had they put him in a sexual relationship with Sansa in season 8, it would have completely ruined the character for me.

I've been watching every single one of ya'lls reactions to GOT and can't believe you're at the end. I haven't commented in a long time, but just had to on this one...I'm like Dan...there are certain scenes that no matter how many times I watch, I always cry. The scene where Jamie knights Brienne is one of the top cry scenes for me. It's just wonderful, special and powerful. These characters are so fantastic! Not only did Brienne become a knight...it was Jamie who knighted her. and not only that, but he OFFERED to do so. I can't help but believe he just wanted to give her anything he could. It is such a touching and meaningful scene.

Jaime knights Brienne with Widow's Wail, while she has Oathkeeper with her. It's the symbolic coming together of the swords Tywin re-forged from Ned Stark's sword Ice. Where else but in Winterfell. With the knighting it's like the Two Swords are one once again. That was a nice touch, dare I say. The first time Jaime saw Brienne was as a prisoner, during that heated "Kingslayer! And what a King he was!..." convo that he had with Catelyn about knighthood and forsaken vows. Now that conversation is complete.

The Dragon Queen ain't got no support system like that lol. Ok not gonna lie. I usually hate on Emilia but the range of emotions she manages to capture in her facial expressions during the Jon reveal scene is nothing short of incredible. Actually I don't think Gendry and Arya are that much of an age difference. In real life there's about a 9 year age difference between them, she was 22 and he was 31, but in the show (because of Robert's bastards plot) there's only implied to be about a 5 year-ish age difference. So if Arya is 18 there then Gendry is about 23.

just a NO SPOILER advice: please use the brighted up version of 8x3, because it is so dark the details merge together, especially for us watching it in a tiny reaction window. Next to that I recommend to reduce the light in your room drastically, and put a single light source behind the tv (a candle is enough), it will optically help improve the contrast. Trust me on this one, I watched the episode back in 2019 in perfect conditions at night on a professional 10-bit colors monitor, and half the time I had a hard time recognizing the important details.

I get Dany's apprehension of Tyrion for trusting Cersei(Even if that is grossly out of character for him), but Dany knew her father was a terrible man, even said it herself. Also Jaime saved half a million people by killing Aerys and his pyromancer; it annoys me that Brienne didn't bring that part up as it would come across as less personal and more objective. "I trust him because he did what he did for good reasons" not, "he saved me therefore he is good". I get that Brienne's point is accurate and Sansa believed her, but the one who needed convincing was Dany, who only agreed because Jon and Sansa were not opposed to him joining and part of me thought Dany could hope he ends up dying to The Night King's horde. Tyrion overfilling Podrick's goblet always got a giggle out of me XD Brienne getting knighted is her character arc coming full circle. What Jaime did here was damn awesome. Arya is 18 and Gendry is 24.

"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" can also be interpreted as "A Night of the Seven Kingdoms", meaning this could be the last true night left for everybody from all corners of the Seven Kingdoms. Also, I really love Pod's singing "Jenny of Oldstones", it really is meaningful because of the history of Jenny, who married Prince Duncan Targaryen, who abdicated his throne just to marry her. Because of this, Duncan's nephew took the throne, Aerys, the mad king. So it pretty much set in motion everything that is going on now.

I don't look at it as Sansa being obstinate. The audience has been watching Dany's story since season 1, but Sansa doesn't know her. Robb went south, and lost the North because he fell in love. It might look to Sansa like history is repeating itself with Jon. As Sansa said, men do stupid things for women. Jon said "She'll be a good queen." How do you know that, Jon? What do you really know about this woman you met a few months ago? Who didn't even want to let you leave Dragonstone until you bent the knee? If I were Sansa, I'm not sure I would trust Jon's judgement either. In Sansa's eyes, Daenerys is someone she doesn't know who is here to subjugate the North with two fire-breathing weapons of mass destruction. Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives took the North with their dragons 300 years ago, but before that the Starks had ruled the North for 8,000 years.. Torren Stark, "The King Who Knelt" did so under threat of Aegon's dragons, which has been a sore spot with the North since then. And now Jon is the second king who knelt for the Targaryens. If I was a Northerner, I might not be looking at Dany as my savior, either. It probably sounds like I hate Dany - I don't - I just can see it from Sansa's viewpoint, too.

Dany and Jaime coming face to face reminded me of that beautiful description of Westeros, or rather Rhaesh Andhal in the Dothraki tongue, as Dany would imagine it in exile. It ends with a thought about Jaime : *Somewhere beyond the sunset, across the narrow sea, lay a land of green hills and flowered plains and great rushing rivers, where towers of dark stone rose amidst magnificent blue-grey mountains, and armored knights rode to battle beneath the banners of their lords. The Dothraki called that land Rhaesh Andahli, the land of the Andals. In the Free Cities, they talked of Westeros and the Sunset Kingdoms. Her brother had a simpler name. “Our land,” he called it. The words were like a prayer with him. If he said them enough, the gods were sure to hear. “Ours by blood right, taken from us by treachery, but ours still, ours forever. You do not steal from the dragon, oh, no. The dragon remembers.” And perhaps the dragon did remember, but Dany could not. She had never seen this land her brother said was theirs, this realm beyond the narrow sea. These places he talked of, Casterly Rock and the Eyrie, Highgarden and the Vale of Arryn, Dorne and the Isle of Faces, they were just words to her. Viserys had been a boy of eight when they fled King’s Landing to escape the advancing armies of the Usurper, but Daenerys had been only a quickening in their mother’s womb. Yet sometimes Dany would picture the way it had been, so often had her brother told her the stories. The midnight flight to Dragonstone, moonlight shimmering on the ship’s black sails. Her brother Rhaegar battling the Usurper in the bloody waters of the Trident and dying for the woman he loved. The sack of King’s Landing by the ones Viserys called the Usurper’s dogs, the lords Lannister and Stark. Princess Elia of Dorne pleading for mercy as Rhaegar’s heir was ripped from her breast and murdered before her eyes. The polished skulls of the last dragons staring down sightlessly from the walls of the throne room while the Kingslayer opened Father’s throat with a golden sword.*

In honor of Dany and Jaime finally coming face to face, an excerpt on how the Kingsguard seemed in Dany's imagination during exile : *Every khal had his bloodriders. At first Dany had thought of them as a kind of Dothraki Kingsguard, sworn to protect their lord, but it went further than that. Jhiqui had taught her that a bloodrider was more than a guard; they were the khal’s brothers, his shadows, his fiercest friends. “Blood of my blood,” Drogo called them, and so it was; they shared a single life. The ancient traditions of the horselords demanded that when the khal died, his bloodriders died with him, to ride at his side in the night lands. If the khal died at the hands of some enemy, they lived only long enough to avenge him, and then followed him joyfully into the grave. In some khalasars, Jhiqui said, the bloodriders shared the khal’s wine, his tent, and even his wives, though never his horses. A man’s mount was his own. Daenerys was glad that Khal Drogo did not hold to those ancient ways. She should not have liked being shared. And while old Cohollo treated her kindly enough, the others frightened her; Haggo, huge and silent, often glowered as if he had forgotten who she was, and Qotho had cruel eyes and quick hands that liked to hurt. He left bruises on Doreah’s soft white skin whenever he touched her, and sometimes made Irri sob in the night. Even his horses seemed to fear him.*

37:00 Iron islands is just a small group of islands to the west, while The north is literally half of Westeros. Thats probably why Daenerys is struggling with the independence stuf
@derps0n839
@derps0n839 2 жыл бұрын
They both know the history too. The North was independent when Aegon's conquest happened, but Torrhen Stark bent the knee. From Dany's perspective, it worked out because they didn't have to fight, but from Sansa's perspective, that started a lot of problems for the Starks because they really aren't built for the politics of the 7 kingdoms.

The reason Daenerys didn't want to give up the North is that it's bigger than all the other kingdoms combined. The Iron Islands are Puerto Rico.

Best episode of the season, hands down for me!!!! I tear all through this ep. Theon arriving gets me every time. Knighting and Pod singing. And even Arya and Gendry. She has thoughts about him in the books lol. And they show that in s2. Or attempt to. She’s staring at him shirtless. And they had this emotional attachment that was hinted at beyond sibling. He was 23 in the books. As they say, that is a small age gap for this era. But she been slitting throats and baking pies out of human body parts. Sex is probably safer. Ha. -- Only negative was almost zero explanation of the White Walkers and who they are. End the worlds memory? Uh, ok. Yes Dany, of course. It’s all she ever wanted is the throne. They keep attempting to show her as the outcast. Jealous when Theon knelt to Sansa. Not sure they accomplished it, but certainly hints. Beautiful ep! This is where I wished it ended. Lol

Yara had something that Dany wanted, the ship's to ferry her people across the sea to Westeros. That why she was willing to agree to their request to be independent. Sansa isn't offering anything, she's just claiming their independence. So Dany wouldn't be as willing to go with that again.

27:24 the look on Arya's face is the realization that winter came but you didn't. Lmao. More importantly I love how everybody has the same reaction to this scene. Totally uncomfortable with it could of lived without it. Yet the same people are perfectly fine with Arya ruthlessly murdering several dozen people even cheering as she cut the throat of one then watched gleefully as he died.

Actually it's just a callback to the other times in the show when people were asleep and she couldn't sleep because she's too busy thinking about all the people she wants to kill. There are actually several scenes when she's younger and Gendry is asleep next to her and she's shown wide awake reciting her list etc... Also it shows her over the lyrics "and she never wanted to leave."

FYI Season 8 Arya is 18 and Gendry is 5 years older so he's 23. It's hard to not see Arya as a child still but she's an adult here and it's not like Gendry is some dirty old man. Plus, Arya is the total instigator, so...it is what it is. Anyway, I'd say if she's old enough to be a bad ass faceless man and fight in battles then she's old enough to choose if and who she wants to sleep with. Her first time could easily have been like Sansa's, we should be thankful that it wasn't and instead she got to make the call.

I always held a theory that Sam was given those specific scrolls to transcribe at the citadel on purpose. The Maesters hate magic because they are men of science (this is much better documented in the books) and clearly the dragons make a lot more magic possible. If the Maester who performed the annulment and remarriage passed the knowledge down among a select group, they could have seized the opportunity to try to pit the two remaining Targaryens against each other and hopefully destroy themselves, and their dragons, for good. Not the most exciting or juicy theory, but it does explain a lot. I have another one that I'll explain after the next episode.

of course this was phenomenal like the previous episode, and like spoils of war, and like olenna and like a whole bunch of other things. everyone who watches this with new eyes say the same thing. I have seen not one person who reacts in any other way than you did. Yeah there are inconsistencies that become more glaring on later watches, but overall the impression remains the same. It's a great fuxkin episode. The asoiaf cult really did a number on the reputation of this one. but as you can see with the casual fan interest for house of the dragon and the jon snow sequel there's plenty of people who've never stopped loving the show and would want to get their fill of more Got universe.
