In fact, that scene was actually developed by Karen Allen and Paul Freeman. In the script as-written, Marion was going to simply seduce Belloq, but Allen (rightfully) felt that would undermine Marion's character, and Freeman supported her. So they worked out the drinking game together as a callback to the previous scene, with Marion trying to drink Belloq under the table to escape.

The Egyptian swordsman is played by British stuntman legend Terry Richards who trained hard for almost a MONTH for what should have been a long and spectacular fight scene according to the script. But as stated, Ford felt sick and it was a particularly hot day, so they just scrapped the whole scene for the gun shot.
@E_y_a_l
@E_y_a_l 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't an improve by Ford, it's just a myth, an actor doesn't improvise and start shooting his gun on a scene without telling the crew about it, even before mentioning safety reasons, the stuntman that played the swordsman wouldn't have known to fall after being shot if it was an improve, the real story is that Ford was sick and they were behind schedule so they decided to shorten the scene and found a funny way to do it.

The coat hanger gag came about because it was cut out of Steven Spielberg’s previous film, the war comedy 1941. In that movie, it was done by Christopher Lee, but (like much of the rest of the movie) it didn’t get a laugh from test audiences. Spielberg vowed to put the joke in every movie he made until it got a laugh. Fortunately, his very next movie was RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

There's lots of scenes in these movies which borrow from the old cliffhanger serials. In Drums Of Fu Manchu, this situation happens in reverse. Bad guys steal a stone tablet but drop it in the mud as they leave. Our heroes make a plaster cast of the impression, thinking they have all the relevant information. But they don't realise that the back of the tablet had a warning about a booby-trap.

A large portion of the screen time for Gimli in LOTR is actually 4'10" stunt double, martial arts and equestrian expert Brett Beattie, not 6'1" actor John Rhys-Davies. Beattie became the go-to Gimli when Rhys-Davies developed an allergic reaction to the extensive facial prosthetics. However Beattie was not given the proper screen credit, he is only named as a generic stuntman in the credits. This was because he did not have an agent. Fortunately when it was time for the main cast to get their Elvish "9" tattoos, Beattie was invited to get one also. John Rhys-Davies never got his LOTR tattoo.

Forty years on, and it's still one of the most purely entertaining movies out there. The sequels are a lot of fun too; tone-wise, they follow the trajectory of the original Star Wars trilogy with a darker second chapter and a goofier third one that re-visits some of the territory of the first. Interesting that you should mention a high budget for this movie; in fact, Steven Spielberg treated it as an exercise in finishing a film on time & on budget (which he'd repeatedly failed to do in his last few movies: Jaws, Close Encounters & 1941). He had $18 million for it, and accomplished his goal.

"1941" was probably the film that made Speilberg change his process as you said. Jaws and CEot3K were huge successes, so he kinda got away with going over time and budget. 1941 was his first major bomb, so he had to impose some self-discipline after that

Raiders is my favorite adventure film of all time. :) It wasn't Hitler who in real life, was obsessed with the occult; it was Heinrich Himmler, the leader of the SS and one of the architects of the Holocaust. Fun fact: The reason why Indy tells Marion to close her eyes as the Ark is opened, is because a deleted scene had the old man translate an additional warning on the headpiece, that warned against looking inside the Ark.

@@tarmaque Not really, Lot's wife was still connected to the sin of Sodom in her heart and didn't want to leave it. It was God's judgement of sin that she was given the chance to flee from, but didn't accept. It is more a reference to the men of Beth shemesh (a town in Israel) who looked into the Ark after it had returned from the land of the Philistines (where the Gaza strip is today) 70 men died when they did so (1 Samuel 6:19) As an aside, the comment in the movie when the US government agents are talking with Jones and Brody and the comment is made that the Bible talks about the Ark leveling mountains and laying waste entire regions is not accurate. The 70 men, a guy riding a cart carrying the Ark, and the people who lived in the 5 Philistine cities who got tumours, are the only negative effects of disrespecting the Ark that the Bible talks about.

Himmler and Hess as well (who would have been the #2 guy in Germany in 1936). Goebbels had an exploitative interest in the occult - as in he'd use anything that could be twisted into propaganda (he's the one who played up Nostradamus prophecies that seemed to predict Hitler's coming to power). Hitler himself though? Nope, he was if anything irreligious, though he had a kind of agnostic concept of 'Providence' and destiny in general. Hess was the connection to the aristocratic Thule Society, which pumped money into the early Nazi party, as he was also a Thulist. The Thule Society certainly wasn't pulling the strings (as some people desperate to up the occult aspect of the Nazis try to make out) because in an overall 'purge' of fortune tellers and other mystics in Germany, von Sebotendorff himself, head of the Thule Society, was imprisoned. Somebody (probably Hess) arranged for his release and he immediately fled to Turkey.

According to the Bible, there was also Aaron's (Moses's brother) staff, that had sprouted leaves and ripe almonds (God's way of confirming Aaron and his family and descendants as Priests) and a jar of Manna that the Israelites fed on while travelling in the desert. Stone doesn't decompose (unless it is made of certain minerals in a wet environment) so I don't think that was it. But, it is entirely possible that the Ark was not air-or sand- tight. In a sandstorm that lasted a whole year, there is a good chance that sand could have gotten inside. I think the Three Items of the Ark were simply buried in sand over the 1000s of years.

I would guess that the special effects to properly represent such beings would either be too expensive or not exist.

Indiana Jones is literally an icon of American Cinema on the same scale as Darth Vadar to be honest. So glad you're watching this film. Personally my favorite two Indiana Jones films are Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, and I'm pretty sure most would agree, that Temple of Doom though not horrible does take a darker spin to the films vs the rest. Issue I think with Temple of Doom is they made the blonde lady the comic relief in the film, but she comes off as irritating and annoying. Were as the comedy/humor in the former and the later are just more genuine and actually fun/entertaining. If you like Indiana Jones you'd likely love 2005's Sahara and 1999's The Mummy. Similar mix of adventure/humor, both wonderful films. The Mummy being the more famous of the two.

There is a rumor that the car chase in the Castle of Cagliostro influenced the car chase in this movie. While it isn't so, Spielberg has high praise for Miyazaki first feature film which is truly up there as a fantastic adventure anime. And since it's before the foundation of Studio Ghibli, i think it's safe to watch on your channel (but do check up) Spielberg and Lucas were influenced by the adventure serials of the 40's and 50's and they created one of the most iconic character in cinematic history.

According to what I remember, the Ark contained three things: the fragments of the Ten Commandments, Aaron's Rod, and a pot of mana. But since that Ark is not exactly Tupperware, time did it's bit and all that is left is sand and dust. As for why the ritual backfired, I believe it was because of three things. 1) the Ark needs special protocols and times and reasons to open it up and by whom. 2) Belloq was not of the priesthood, and only they can safely communicate with the Ark. 3) And this is very important: Belloq wasn't Jewish. Anyone not Hebrew that tried to screw around with the Ark wound up with severe punishments, to say the least.

NO ONE can touch the Ark itself. Also, no one can OPEN the Ark. You'll die. Period. And don't look inside it, either, if someone is stupid enough to open it. In fact, there's no special protocols, reasons, or times or that make it ok to touch/open, use. This set the standard for the entire action-adventure genre. There had been plenty of adventure movies before it, but none of had this kind if intensity and pacing. 'Temple of Doom' is not as good as 'Raiders,' but I'd still recommend watching it next, then 'Last Crusade' which could be argued to the best in the series. But 'Raiders' set a lot of pop-culture references that even people who have never seen the movie will recognize, and it inspired every action-adventure film that came after it.

You have to understand. Indy and Marion didn't break up because they didn't love each other. Marion was underaged and her father found out they were sleeping with each other. (That's why Indy and her father stopped speaking to each other). I forget the exact ages they were supposed to be but Indy was in his early 20s and Marion was in her early to mid teens when they dated. For the record in both the time period the movie was set and when it was actually made such relationships weren't uncommon. People only got really strict about age of consent when the internet made if much much easier for adults and teens to meet and hook up. Also "ancient air". Air in tombs and such is actually poisonous.( Full of CO2 and ancient viruses and bacteria) So you have to let tombs air out when you first open them. It believed that is what made several of the people who found king Tut sick. They didn't let the tomb properly air out before they went into it

This is what happens when you get sloppy history. It wasn't Hitler, it was Himmler and Hess. Those were your occult nuts in the Reich, as opposed to your regular brand of loons. Also Hitler was vehemently against smoking (which, if you ever bother to watch Downfall, you'll notice they include a detail that after scramble-brain kills himself, one of the first things everyone does is light a cigarette, which they had to go outside to do when he was alive) and the first studies connecting smoking to cancer were done in Germany in the 1930s (but suppressed by the tobacco industry until the 1960s). Hitler was also an obnoxious vegetarian, one of those sort who would loudly ridicule people eating meat around him as 'corpse eaters' and that sort of crap. There's a fun story about that. During his only state visit to Finland, Mannerheim made sure that every single dish at the big lavish state dinner had some sort of meat component. As you can guess, Mannerheim despised Hitler, but the Nazis were the only ones who'd help his nation against the USSR. If you bother to look into his biography, Hitler was the most documented person to have ever lived before Chris-Chan.

Indi's revolver is a Smith&Wesson MK II hand-ejector, which was an export model to the British during WWI because they couldn't make Webleys fast enough. However it has had its barrel shortened and front sight replaced, so we can assume it has also been customized internally to some extent. It is not difficult to lighten and smooth out the double-action trigger pull on those old Smith&Wesson 2nd Models, and many did. Noted shooting enthusiast Elmer Keith considered it the best revolver ever made. I have an Smith&Wesson Army Model 1917 which is the modification to the 2nd Model supplied to the US Army for WWI. Indi's pistol would have been in .455 Webley. I also have a WWI Webley MK VI, and I can tell you the Smith&Wesson is a far superior firearm. (Which is not to say the Webley is bad either.)
