"Watching Planes" Short Film Test | S5iix | Prores 5.8K
This short film is about a guy that likes to watch planes on the beach front.
This is a short film test on the Lumix s5iix in 5.8k prores, with the sigma 28-70 f2.8 dg dn. I was impressed by how sharp it was. I even thought that it was too sharp.

Reading your other comment about sharpening......and I think im gonna start sharpening my footage too lol, cause this looks way better than anything I created in my video channel. Cheers!.

Just don't go too far, I think in this video it went too far because I tried upscaling it as well, which sharpened the footage more. My more recent content I have actually stopped sharpening footage though that isn't prores. Thanks for watching. 😊

The clip is nice, but definitely, there is some digital sharpening going on here. My S5IIX doesn't look like that. If you haven't added sharpening in post, you either haven't shot this with V-Log profile or your camera has some heavy sharpening enabled. You can instantly see how the branches on the trees and your hair are digitally sharpened (and quite heavily). This isn't ''resolution'' sharpness. What were your camera settings?

Thanks! It was shot in vlog at 640 iso, I did add a little sharpening you are correct. However I think it got a second does of sharpening as I tried to upscale it to 8k and as I believe I had it set to sharpen when upscaling, so maybe this was what made it so digital, would love to know your thoughts?

@@jackyulesmith Ahh makes sense yes! I think it looks great, except the sharpening, which I would completely avoid. The S5IIX already has a minimum internal sharpening amount that can't be disabled completely (even when set to 0 in camera), unless you shoot RAW with an external recorder. Most people complains about it, even when they're not adding any sharpening in post. A true cinema camera has zero internal sharpening, and if they ever want to slightly sharpen the image in post for some reason, they usually use a method that is only affecting the highlights (not by increasing the overall sharpness). Also, why would you upscale to 8K? Nobody has an 8K TV/monitor, and resolution is the very least factor to consider when making cinema. Even 4K is considered too sharp by at least 50% of the community, as too much detail kills the cinematic experience. Most movies that are truly mastered in 4K don't even show the details in 4K (the file is in 4K, but most of the time, they've reduced detail resolution to make it look smoother). 2.5K to 2.8K is the sweet spot for cinema (in terms of sharpness). ARRI did limit their camera sensors to 2K for years, even when RED were releasing high resolution sensors (4K, 5K, 6K and 8K) because it wasn't really required, and even ''undesired'' sometimes. Shooting in high resolution has advantages in order to allow your sensor to capture as much detail and color information as possible for things like CGI, reframing or faking camera movements in post, but the final output resolution should be limited in order to get a smoother image. I even released a video last month demonstrating how to make the S5IIX look less digital in post, by adding light diffusion/OLPF simulation FX to tame the minimal sharpness. My channel is new, but I will release more stuff soon, including tutorials. I would also strongly recommend you check out Emotive Color, which I've been part of the early development since 2017. The is a LUT pack specifically taylored to a particular camera sensor. It precisely transforms the color science of your camera into LogC (ARRI Alexa), based on the light source used in the shot. This is pretty much the best thing you can do to your camera. You can get the Daylight and Tungsten (and mixed light) version for 65$, and it's worth every penny! There is nothing more accurate than that. You can either use Emotive Color as the final color grade (which is BEAUTIFUL with super creamy highlight rolloff and perfect colors) or as the starting point for a creative grade. You can also use the LogC conversion to unlock any tool/powergrade/plugin made for the ARRI Alexa. Check out the two first videos on my channel! I just subscribed to yours btw, so make sure to do the same on mine! I'm here to anwser any question you may have ;) Enjoy!

Thanks for the information, didn't know that there was still sharpening set to "0". I also did come from a bmpc 6k, which in raw I tended to add a slight sharpen to only to like 0.47 in radius. The only reason I upscaled to 8k was originally because I just wanted to upload it in the native 5.8k (which I am not sure KZbin supports could be wrong). So instead of downscaling, I upscaled. Still trying to figure out the camera. In terms of the LUT pack I will check them out, sound really good. I do like the ARRI Log C. I will check out your channel and sub. cheers!

@@jackyulesmith Yes sadly, 0 isn't truly 0 (same for noise reduction). It was the same thing with the original S5 (which I previously owned), but it's even worst on the S5II/X (more internal processing). That's why I found it strange that you actually felt like you needed to add more sharpening, when most people are getting the Ninja V or Video Assist 12G mainly to get rid of what's already there by default at 0. If you look at the S1H for instance, it can go below 0 (-2 or -5, can't remember). So yea.. this is a limitation of the S5 model and it sucks! Before that, I owned the original BMPCC 6K, which obviously didn't have any sharpening, and that was great. If you still feel like you'd like to add a touch of sharpening, I would stronhly recommend looking into different techniques of doing it. A simple and effective one is to go in the Blur/Radius section, but instead of dropping all 3 sliders down (linked), just unlink them and only drop down the RED channel. It will give you more subtle results. Better than that would be to make a sharpening compound node using the Edge Detection OFX to target specific areas, but it is more advanced. You can find tutorials on KZbin. Also, adding sharpening always adds a risk of introducing aliasing into your footage, which would pretty much cancel out the benefits of shooting in ProRes 422 HQ. The S5IIX shot in V-Log with internal processing set to 0 already looks A LOT sharper than any movie you ever watched (even those mastered in 4K). Obviously, this is only my recommendations.. you can do whatever you want and it's totally okay haha. I don't think KZbin supports 5.8K either. You are better downscaling to 4K by editing is a 4K timeline. There is no benefit of upscaling above 4K. Also, the higher the resolution, the more KZbin will compress and mess up your image. Some users even prefer to upload their videos in 2.5K instead of 4K (while using the same bitrate as if they were uploading in 4K), so that way, you can ''trick'' KZbin and better use the allowed bitrate. The final result will look less compressed (you're trading some resolution for bitrate). When you say that you like the ARRI LogC, I guess you mean by using the Color Space Transform tool to convert your camera profil into LogC? That's what most people do, and this is so far from being accurate, because Color Space Transform tools don't know the actual light source used, and their transforms are very general. There's absolutely no comparison with Emotive Color, trust me! In my first video, you'll see the difference. I'd recommend you take screenshots of the different examples and analyze the stills instead of the video (easier to see the nuances that way). Okay I'm done lol Cheers buddy!

That really sucks, excited to see what the S1II brings. Honestly, I did some tests with C4K All I (though it shouldn't be compared to Prores) recently and thought it was very sharp, and as you have said too sharp. Probably won't add sharpening in post unless I get the video assist and put a mist filter on instead. As for KZbin still learning it haha, probably just downscale to 4k. I do wish they supported more resolutions, but again as you have correctly stated previously not much point in uploading above 4k. Yes, correct the colour space transform tool. I did notice in your videos it does look a lot better, that is a pretty sweet lut pack! Anyway, I appreciate how much effort you put into the comments, very informative!
