U Got The Look - no sampling. I don’t think Prince ever sampled anyone’s work. 🤔 That was the song that made me a Prince fan forever. I was a kid and liked all the songs from Purple Rain. One day U Got The Look came on the radio and I was like 😳😯😧 What is this incredible ear candy?! The music, the arrangement, the lyrics, the vocals… It was so creative, like nothing I’d ever heard before. When it was over and the DJ announced it was the new one from Prince, I was hooked!

Prince really was a once in a generation talent. His music is Prince and not Prince at the same time, he wasn't afraid to take risks and experiment, while still remaining consistent and recognisable. Its a conundrum but it worked !

Loved all the song choices here but Prince really doesn’t have a bad one to choose from his catalog. “U Got The Look” is definitely a favorite and doesn’t get enough attention for how unique ahead of it’s time it is. As some have already mentioned, it features both Sheena Easton (a singer Prince fell in love with vocally on one of her earlier songs and ended up writing multiple tracks for her) and Sheila E., who is one of the top drummers alive today. Prince definitely had a thing for talented women.

When Prince hit the scene in the late 70's early 80's there was a little question about his sexuality. The song "Controversy" was a response to all the questions and rumors that was swirling around about him at the time. Funny though as all the questions were never actually directly answered. In the end it never mattered as Prince (no matter his sexuality) is simply a artistic and fashion genius.

Great song choices. Sheena Easton is the female singer in U Got the Look. She is a great singer you might wanna check out eventually. And Sheila E. was the percussionist in that video. If you want more of I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER, check out the album version. It's just over 6mins long. The song is from his self-titled sophomore album "PRINCE". As a matter of fact, that album was his first platinum selling album. It also featured his original version of "I FEEL FOR YOU" (which Chaka Kahn covered and made into a huge hit in 1984). You should check out that whole album. The song SEXY DANCER was burning up the clubs back then. There's a clip of the legendary dance group The Lockers dancing to it on Soul Train. The Lockers had legendary dancers Adolpho "Shabba Doo" Quinones, Fred "ReRun" Berry (of What's Happening), and Toni Basil (who sang the song "Oh Mickey").

Hah, that glitch, I'm going to attribute that to Prince. He was notorious for having his lawyers send cease and desist letters. Anyway, at this point in his career, Prince detested rap music and sampling, so he would have never put it in his music. Enjoyed you review.

However he did start experimenting with rap on the Black Album and by the time of Diamonds and Pearls album, he was rapping in songs himself. He had Cat rap on Sign o the Times and Lovesexy. He stopped I'd say in the late 90s.

Not true. Prince respected Rap and was very fond of Outkast, especially Andre 3000. Prince personally chose them to induct him into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004 which is a huge honor and he even shouted them out in one of his songs. He had so much respect for them. Prince was also a fan of Kendrick Lamar. He invited Kendrick to perform on stage with him at one of his concerts in 2015 and they almost collaborated on Kendrick's album but they never found the time to do it.

Black Sweat is still my ringtone, very efficient and groovy! Please check out the full version of "Controversy", it includes the Lord's Prayer. And the whole lyrics are so relatable, people who would deny it are lying to themselves. And yes, it was a response to the critiques reaction about his Dirty Mind album. The title itself is inspired by something Owen Husney, his first manager, told him : "Controversy is press", hence the newspaper titles on the cover of the "Controversy" album. Prince was already about business at the time! You're right about the short videos, most of his videoclips were calibrated by Warner for TV broadcast and didn't have the full version. There is one video that goes all the way down, it's "Automatic" from the "1999" album. Get ready to be surprised if you watch it! And if you want to react to "I could never take the place of your man" please react to the full album version, not the shortened video. All the lyrics from "You got the look" are original, the high pitched voice is "Camille", a Prince alias he created by studio trickery and used on the "Sign ☮ the Times" album. It's actually Camille who is singing, Prince's alter-ego, with the voice slightly sped up and then brought back down. He has an album's worth of Camille songs. He used it in The Black Album, Sign O' the Times, and Crystal Ball albums. This video is from the Sign O' the Times movie which I think you will enjoy. The last 2, every Prince fan now them with respect for them self. I’m guessing controversy had to do with ppl speculating about his sexuality bc he was very androgynous at that time. It was such a big deal to ppl. In the early 80's (Controversy era--also have you heard Sexuality, another song on this album??) Prince was notoriously too shy to do interviews but he was also persistently political---at constant odds with the Reagan Administration, record company restrictions on genre bending and just our hypocritically sexually prudish culture in the U.S. at the time. Note: Madonna's rise during this period echoed this same brashness around sexuality. So folkx would speculate as he NEVER did interviews until pretty much the Parade album. Controversy was in response to the backlash he was getting from mainstream press and radio following his debut tour with his stage fashion which became his everyday fashion. The genderbending of Bowie, Jaggar and Mercury was being replaced by a harder more masculine style that did have some feminine fleurshes but it was still trying to be hard. Also the black community especially the black male community was uncomfortable with how feminine he was and angry how easy he got women. And then the homophobic disco bashing and death to disco movement also played into people's critism of his presentation. According to the Super deluxe Reissue of Sign o Times with 7 cds of 100 unreleased songs this song U Got the Look was recorded after he submitted his 3 LP masterpiece Crystal Ball to his label and they had him cut it down to the 2LP SOTT. His engineer Susan Rodgers said he worked on it for a week or more which was unusual for a man who wrote, and performed a song a day for most of his adult live. She had normally seen him shelve those songs to come back to later or forget about but he kept going. And yes the talking bits are original to the song and goes with the Camille character he convinced while recording the project. Not a man and not a woman today non binary and it was the character of the sped of vocals of this song
