Here's how brilliantly this movie was made: Gothel only ever shows Rapunzel affection in relation to her hair. Instead of kissing her cheek, she kisses her hair. Calling her "my flower". In contrast, when Eugene is doing the same, he actually pushes her hair out of her face.

Mother Gothel is so manipulative, gas lighting Rapunzel with backhanded comments and fear tactics to keep her inside, any sort of 'affection' is given to Rapunzels hair, like kissing her on the top of the head etc. She doesn't care about Rapunzel at all, just the hair, and it's so sad. You'd think that, after 18 years of raising someone, you'd grow to care for them. But nope, not Mother Gothel.

@Alice Lanterne Uhhhh......no.....the part the teens and young adults being nicer then most folks isn't actually true. Most of them are on tic tok twitter doing very stupid and cringy things that will end up following them like a bad stink when they get older, also being fake activists pushing things that are very unreasonable and absolutely insane, calling people a racist if they don't have the same opinion, screaming in the faces of people, laying their habds on them.....etc. There was one young man that stabbed his own mother to death not too long ago. It doesn't really matter HOW old you are you can dress yourself up as a rose but a turd is still a turd. I remember this one girl was talking about punching racists and I asked her "So how would that actually stop him from being racist?" She had no answer....because all you've done was hit someone you did not change their point of view.

Part of why she looks 13 is that Mother Gothel is so afraid of her beauty and power giving her confidence that she keeps her in a too-small dress (look at how short the skirt and sleeves are), abuses her, nitpicks her appearance, and she shrinks into herself as a result. That and the lack of sunlight, fresh air, and adequate exercise.

@WisteriaDrake
@WisteriaDrake 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the fact that Mother Gothel isn't Rapunzel's real mother kinda diminishes it a bit. Mother Gothel is evil, but that's okay, because she's not her REAL mother. Her REAL mother is totally perfect. IRL, while this does happen to adopted or foster children all the time, I'd say it happens to direct familial lines even more. My own mother by birth acts much the same way, using emotional bullying against me and my siblings. It's a great message, and for Disney, a huge step in the right direction. However, overall, it's still a Disneyfication of a real issue.

@@WisteriaDrake Disney didn't invent tha story and it's based on fairy tales, like most of their stories. It's an archetype and allegory, like in that fairy tale as well. Try to read more into that. Her biological mother, you can argue,is not her real mother,because she is a strenger to her. the thing is, it shows, that someone who raised you can still be not your real mother,because real mother wouldn't do that (real,not biological). True mother is someone who will treat you with respect and will wish you best. That's not dinseyfication =_=' Original fairy tales had always real parents as abusers btw. Always. In all cultures. BUT later it was changed to stepparents (for example, in original Cindirella story it was her mother that treated her poorly, in original Hansel and Gretel it was real mother who asked her hsuband to get rid of their kids when in modern version it was STEPmother), because of christianisation. Please,stoptreating Disney like their invented everything when,in fact,they created NOTHING. Stories they are telling are based always on something. And troubles with parents and the myth that biological family always loves you and is healthy and you should respect your elders no matter what is SOCIAL myth, CULTURAL myth and "TRUTH" we want to believe. What Disney or any other franchise creates just mirrors that. Nothing more. Society is more aware of the issue, Disney will also mirror that. We believed many things before Disney was even created. We made our stories like that.

Gothel is one of my favorite Disney villains. She’s like Lady Tramaine in that she doesn’t have some big grand scheme of world domination or whatever. She just has control over this one person and what she does is just awful. The amount of gaslighting in this film is kind of astounding. Any actual affection is always directed at Raps’ hair, even the nickname Little Flower. She doesn’t see Raps as her own person. Just something she has to keep around in order to stay young. My favorite line from her is actually: “You want me to be the bad guy? Fine. Now I’m the bad guy.” It’s just… really good delivery.

Yay, the best modern Disney-movie in my rankings :) Rapunzel and Eugene have the amazing chemistry and growth, both as a couple and individuals. The soundtrack is amazing and the plot very creative. Mother Gothel is one of the best Disney-villains (again, because there are so many people like her in the world and it's terrifying) and "Mother Knows Best" is the song that I hate to love because the lyrics are basically about her belittling and abusing Rapunzel, but it's so catchy and well-arranged that it is almost impossible not to like it. Its' reprise is even better than original to me. "I See The Light" is the best romantic song and scene Disney has ever done, in my eyes. Maximus and Pascal belong to my favorite Disney-sidekicks as well. When you mentioned "THBOND", it reminded me how similar Quasi and Rapunzel are. I know it's a late reply but him cutting her hair that short is supposed to be symbolic. There is more to her than the beauty of her face and her hair. If he were to cut it to like shoulder or middle of her back the impact and symbolism wouldn't have been so strong if that makes sense.

Mother Gothel is a perfect example of what it’s like to grow up with a narcissistic mother. She only cares about herself and her own feelings and she gaslights and manipulates Rapunzel to feel bad about having her own opinions and needs. This movie is great, I love your reaction!

we can see how old mother Gothel is by the dresses, Mother Gothel dress is simple and one-piece, with a belt at the waist, she may be from 1100s, although she does not wear any hair accessories of the time we can notice that Rapunzel's dress is inspired by dresses from the 1550-60s, With a whale bone corset and puffy shoulder sleeves, her skirt is parted from the top and is seen to have accessories to add volume the most difficult begins in the town the women wear bonnets, the dresses are also with volume, shirts with baggy sleeves separated from skirts Men's hat and non-breeches knee-length pants style, Long jackets, waistcoats, and baggy hats are hint of a town from the mid-1700s maybe 1750-1780 The biggest problem to find a date is the parents of rapuzel, the mother wears a style similar to Rapunzel, from 1550-60 but the father looks more from 1620 and the army uniform also makes me think of that time so we are going to leave it in 1750-80 (with some old-fashioned rulers XD) so we can say that mother Gothel lived about 600 years

Probably my favorite thing about this movie is the very inventive idea of the Golden Flower and how it ties everything together. Gothel actually has an motive, a proper reason to keep Rapunzel locked away in this story. This is kind of a plot hole in the original fairy tale, where Gothel's motives are pretty much grossly simplified as keeping Rapunzel locked up just because she can. Here, Rapunzel obtains healing powers and rejuvenating properties from the magic of the Golden Flower, and these powers are also channeled through her tears, which in turn makes sense of the original fairy tale ending, where Rapunzel healed the prince's eyes with her tears (apparently in fairy tale land tears work as a cure for blindness, go figure). This movie is pretty much the definition of the phrase "Canon has been stripped and mined for parts".

The boat scene with the lights is possibly THE most beautiful Disney scene ever created, paired with the song! I usually watch Disney movies in English because I feel like emotions can be expressed better in English, but for Rapunzel I actually prefer to watch it in my mother tongue German. For one, the original story is German and the setting is Germany and secondly „I see the light“ in German sounds so gorgeous :) Also I couldn’t agree more with you, definitely one of the best character chemistries in Disney history 👍🏼

The original story of Rapunzel, from what I can remember, is that a poor couple needed food. The wife was pregnant and the husband went into a garden and stole from a witch. The witch caught him and in exchange for letting him have the food she wanted his first born child. Once the child was born they mournfully had to give up their baby girl, named Rapunzel. The witch raised her as her own and kept her locked in a tower far from the eyes of others. There was no way to get into the tower for strangers and as the girl's hair grew longer, the witch would call, "Rapunzel, let down your long hair!" One day, whilst on a journey through the forest and the witch was away, a Prince stumbled upon this castle. The two of them chatted away and fell for each other. (At some point the Prince figured that he could ask Rapunzel to let down her hair) The witch was none the wiser to their romance and Rapunzel wanted to leave with the prince. However, eventually the witch caught them. The prince was attacked and honestly I don't remember much of the details afterwards but I know, the witch was killed or something and the Prince saved Rapunzel and they got married and lived happily ever after.

When this film came out it was the most not just animated, but the most expensive film ever made (which has since been surpassed), but cost 260 million to make. The voice of Hook Hand is Brad Garret who you can hear in other Disney Pixar films like Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life, Ask any animator and they will tell you the hardest thing to animate is hair. As a counterpart to the appealing and cute design of Rapunzel, the directors wanted to make Flynn Rider "the most handsome, most attractive male lead Disney has ever had." They held a large "Hot Man Meeting" where they gathered about 30 women from the studio and asked them what they considered attractive in a man. They brought in hundreds of images of their favourite male actors and celebrities, which were torn and pasted back again. After much deliberation, his look was eventually narrowed down to one concept drawing One of the few Disney films where both parents are alive. Also there is an easter egg in the Snuggly Duckling n the rafters is Pinocchio. There was a follow up tv series that follows adventures with Rapunzel and Eugene and in case you didn’t notice at the end Eugene says “after years of asking and asking” so it wasn’t one of those things where they became married immediately. The music was done by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater who would do the music for the series as well and because of the show Alan Menken finally won an Emmy completing his Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony wins. This film was nominated for Best Animated Feature (lost to Toy Story 3), and was nominated for Best Original Song for I See the Light (which it didn’t win either). -One thing I need to point out is Gothel never loved Rapunzel at all. She only used her for her magic power. It was all just an act to make Rapunzel stay there. -The reason Donna Murphy’s singing is so great is because she has been on Broadway for a long time.

fun fact you know, there's a theory that mother gothel is actually the Evil Queen from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". This theory is supported by the fact that the two characters have an ambition to be beautiful and young, being even capable of killing people to get it. In addition to the two stories, Snow White and Tangled, set in Germany, if we remember correctly, the last appearance of the Evil Queen in the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was like an old woman, just like mother gothel appears at the beginning of "Tangled". edit: forgot to mention, the easter egg of an APPLE in this scene , over Eugene 49:38

The actress that voices Mother Gothel is a well known Broadway actress, hence the awesome portrayal and singing voice. Loved your reaction. This movie should have been the hit that Frozen was, but for some reason, it just didn't catch the public's eye. Oh hey there, you Nick fan who's reading this. I have a story for you. 40:38 = Somewhere on KZbin, someone said that the emotion of the queen and the king here are wonderfully animated. Here and in the last scene, they don't say a word, and yet, both their facial and body animations are just flawless, and you can feel their emotions pierce through you instantly. Also, a little more personal note, on that one scene : I think it's a significant choice they made here. The king is crying, not the queen. Read it as you want, but I think it's both cuter and a little more heartwrenching.

Technically in the beginning Flynn/Eugene mentioned the movie is about how he died. He technically died in the end but came back to life... so, he wasn't just joking around. Also, Rapunzel is supposed to have 70 feet of that hair. Scientifically, 17-18 years is too short for hair to grow that long. And Pascal has the cutest faces!!! Not sure if you read these comments but your videos are great!!![insert smiley emoji(emojis don't show up on my computer)]. I know that the movie I'm about to suggest isn't the most popular but I think it's very underrated. Mirror Mirror with Julia Roberts and Lily Collins. It's funny yet beautiful. There's also the movie, "The Longest Ride" but that's a more in depth movie that Disney. But again... not too sure if you read the comments. Back to the video comments, "Mother Knows Best" is one of the most back-handed compliment songs from a villain, subtle villainy!!

This was based on the fairy tale “Rapunzel” but they titled the move Tangled to appeal to a wider audience. In the original fairy tale, Rapunzel’s parents aren’t royalty and when she was pregnant, Rapunzel’s mother started craving the rapunzel plant growing in their neighbor’s garden, who happens to be a witch. When she won’t eat anything else, Rapunzel’s father steals the plant for his wife to eat but when she wants more and he sneaks into the garden again, the witch catches him and spares his life and allows him to take as much of the plant that he wants in exchange for giving her their baby once she is born. She ends up taking her, naming her Rapunzel and locking her in the tower that’s only accessible from climbing Rapunzel’s hair. Eventually a prince comes across the tower, sees how the witch enters it and, after she leaves, does the same and ends up meeting Rapunzel. They fall in love and plan an escape from the tower so they can marry (he would bring material for a silk ladder that she would sew together). Before they start the plan however the witch finds out about the prince (in different versions it’s either Rapunzel accidentally telling her that it’s easier to carry the prince up with her hair than the witch or Rapunzel noticing that her dress is tighter around the waist and the witch figuring out that it’s pregnancy) and as punishment, cuts off Rapunzel’s hair and banishes her from the tower. When the prince comes back, the witch tricks him by letting down Rapunzel’s cut hair for him to climb and when he gets to the top, she tells him that Rapunzel is gone and let’s go of the hair. He falls into a bush full of thorns that blind him and he ends up wandering around blind for years. He eventually comes across Rapunzel’s voice; Rapunzel, in some versions, has since given birth to twins, a boy and girl. She cries over him and her tears heal his sight. They and their twins then live happily ever after in his kingdom while the witch is stuck in the tower with no way to get out.
