"This is one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel". Stephen King himself thought that the script was the best book to film adaptation he'd ever read. Also "If he's not dead they do it again...?" Listen: "Electricity shall now be passed through your body UNTIL YOU ARE DEAD in accordance with state law." Harsh, sure, but remember this was 1935. Today they use a lethal injection which looks nowhere near as grisly and painful.

This movie had the most intense audience reaction of any I have ever seen. People screamed "you bastard!" when Percy killed Mr. Jingles and again when he told Dale there was no Mouseville. They openly sobbed during Dale's and Coffey's executions. The woman behind me said "I can't take any more of this" when Dale caught on fire and she left.c

This film was the first time I felt a visceral hatred toward a character. Percy was a bad guy throughout the story and represented one of the worst kinds of people (the cruel, cowardly type who revel in power and prostrate themselves to those more powerful than themselves), but most of the film I still thought of him as a character. When he left the sponge dry just for the sick fun of it, I wanted to reach through the screen and put him in that chair myself. Hutchison plays the role incredibly and Darabont did masterful work at the helm of this project.

Oh, he sure is up there with Mrs. Carmody from the Mist, Annie Wilkes from Misery, and Nurse Ratched from One Flew(just to name a non-King one). King knows how to write them dispicable, disgusting, and twisted enough to think they're doing the right thing when it is clear to everyone else with at least a drop of sense that they are monsters. It takes a special kind of director and a special kind of actor to make them work on film, without the narrator explaining things.

Same, rarely do I ever find a character in a story that I have absolutely no empathy for, let alone sympathy, but this is definitely one of those rare times where I want the absolute worst possible thing to happen to a character, and thankfully it did. Doug Hutchinson did such an incredible job at making a character so hateful and sadistic. I honestly thought Percy was worse than Wild Bill.

That wasn't what he wanted though. In keeping with the whole biblical theme here. JC (John Coffey/Jesus Christ) was tired. His empathy exhausted him. When Christ healed the sick it drained him. He was also tired int he sense of him attempting to teach people about God and the gospel and fighting against the Romans etc. When it was time for Jesus to go he resented it somewhat but he also welcomed it. 3:56 - "Dead man walking" is an expression that was used to describe people who were gonna be executed (capital punishment). It means they're "already dead", but they're walking (because they're obviously still alive yet). It's also the name of another great movie, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn, produced and directed by the main character from Shawshank Redemption. :)

For those of you who are curious about why they're all on death row: Arlen Bitterbuck, the Native American guy, was on death row for killing a man in a drunken brawl over a pair of boots. Eduard Delacroix, the Cajun guy, was on death row for raping and killing a woman, and then burning the building she was in to hide the body. The fire ended up killing more people. William "Wild Bill" Wharton was a serial murderer who was on death row for killing three people during a robbery, one of which was a pregnant woman. John Coffey was on death row after being wrongly convicted of the murder of two young girls.

Yes, executions are witnessed here in the States. For many reasons. The top two are : the victims get to watch the punishment carried out. Secondly, (even though this sounds like a oxymoron) to make sure the execution is carried out humanely. Prisoners are not allowed to be tortured or mistreated before sentence is carried out. Witnesses are there to make sure they are treated with respect.

1. I've read both books and seen both adaptations and The Green Mile beats Shawshank HANDS DOWN at every choice for me. 2. Goof: In 1935 black and white inmates were not kept in the same prison. 3. The word you're looking for is nepotism. 4. Execution attendees are normally victim family members, convict family/friends, press and officials. 5. The book tells us background information about Bitterbuck and Del and why they are on death row. 6. BINGO. You caught on at just after I did. Except I read the book first and caught it after he took away Paul's bladder infection and said I took it back. This adaptation is so good that it portrays the same. 7. James Cromwell/Warden is vegetarian and didn't want to grill meat during the BBQ scene but he was informed that in 1935 people ate meat so he relented. 8. Goof: Electricity causes the body muscles to clench tight including the throat so Del wouldn't be screaming. 9. When Percy goes to the insane asylum I always think, "Couldn't happen to a nicer guy". KARMA's a bitch. Stephen King......You're welcome.

Ah okay thanks for letting me know. Didn’t know that. I thought there was some random people from the public
@LA_HA
@LA_HA 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimotheeReacts I don't know if this is still done, but it used to be that the press was also in attendance in order to represent the general public at executions. Again, I don't know if this is still done but, random members of the public -- perhaps members of the jury? -- used to attend for the same reason, to represent the general public. However, members of the general public did not have to attend, but members of the press did. This was to make certain that everyone was, more or less, aware and in part, involved, in the process since this was done in their name. This was because executions were done as a justice to the victims rather than seen as an injustice to murderers and other capital criminals. Also, that as difficult as it was to bear witness to an execution, it was still something that had to be done as a public good. Over time, there were different groups that came to believe that society shouldn't execute murderers because they felt that there was always a chance that we could execute the wrong person, and therefore, we should stop all executions. Plus, they believe it's not only morally wrong, but it doesn't deter capital crimes from being committed. Conversely, other groups advocated to retain the execution of murderers since the belief is that there would be More capital crimes without it, and that it Would deter even more capital crimes from being committed if it was practiced as it should be. And, there is a very long appeals process to allow correction of those kinds of mistakes, which could take many years, even decades. In fact, it's usual for many death row prisoners to die of natural causes rather than being executed for their crimes, even confessed and confirmed crimes. This is especially true in states with more liberal policies than states with more conservative judicial Systems. It's not a political statement, but it is the case. For example, liberal California tends not to execute prisoners and has tried to ban it altogether (I think it's been "on hold" for decades); while conservative Texas tends to execute death row prisoners after appeals have been exhausted. Some think this shows how each of these systems view victims and prisoners, and which are more important to that states society. PS. Way back, executions used to be public. In fact, they were treated as a holiday of sorts and people kinda had the equivalent of tailgating parties when attending one. The whole family would go. Once it was seen as a gory entertainment, the government changed the rules since this wasn't the intent of an execution.

Cajun traiteurs (treaters), or faith healers, have been ministering to the ill and the injured around the bayous since the eighteenth century, when the Acadians migrated to southwestern Louisiana from France by way of Nova Scotia. Some traiteurs treat any problem, while others specialize. There was a man in my neighbourhood that was a traiteur and people came from all over to have him pray for them. My belief is John's supposed to be a very powerful version of a traiteur.

I'd like to suggest some Tom Cruise movies like Magnolia, Born on the Fourth of July, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire and The Last Samurai. Most people forget Tom Cruise as a Dramatic Actor. These films are Tom Cruise at his best.

If that guy new anything about dogs. He would know that how a dog is depends on the person. Dogs react to energy and emotion. They can sense things that humans cannot. So on some level the dogs owner was in a state of turmoil and something appeared threatening to the dogs owner and the dog picked up on that. So in response the dog reacted by attacking the boy. Because in the dogs mind, he was the threat. Most movies today can't even stand up to this movie.

Unfortunately she wouldn't, when he takes away the affliction he doesn't give a piece of his gift. So she would have died at a normal age. Mr Jingles got the gift not from when he saved him, but by accident whilst John was holding him when Del died. And Paul got the gift when John purposely gave it to him, not when he healed his urinary infection. Sorry not trying to be a know it all, just had the same thought as you did and then watched the film again and realised x

Excellent reaction. Remember, Percy was no less or more evil than the rest of convicts on death row (excluding the one innocent one). They all committed heinous, heartless crimes to get there. One of the best and most overlooked aspects of this movie is the way it is written to trap the audience with their own hypocrisies. All the bleeding hearts who worry about death penalties being too painful or not humane enough, I have never heard any of them say anything less than "I hope Percy dies and suffers horribly dying." (or something similar). The irony, of course, is Percy is simply someone who belongs on death row, making him an equal to the same people you are also crying over and worrying if they suffer. "Innocent" inmates on death row or any crime that requires unanimous guilty verdicts are quite rare, MANY times more rare than what hollywood portrays with their constant "innocent man in jail" trope. Shawshank speaks the truth: "we're all innocent" (but none truly are). It's just a public act for the gullible and easily manipulated bleeding hearts. Notice how Percy and Wild Bill both could suddenly go from evil into sweet and apologetic and whimpering "poor me" acts? Over and over. Those other inmates are the same. They all did horrible stuff (like the dog who bit out the boy's eye then later tucks tail and acts innocent). These evil people all act apologetic and sad when they're caught and being punished, and if you haven't figured that out by watchig Percy and Wild Bill over and over, then you're an emotional fool with less brainpower than Del.

Yes, in the US, people can watch executions. Part of the reason is to have objective observers that can report that the condemned is indeed dead. Some of the attendants may be victims of the condemned or family of the victims.

They must have witnesses at every execution. Now they're split into 3 groups separated by partitions. It's victim's family/ press and government officials/ inmate's family and advocates. Most states they can hear the other groups but not see or meet them.
