The VFX from this movie changed EVERYTHING. The special effects community went nuts because no one had ever done what is now referred to as "bullet time." Looking up how they did the special effects is well worth it because it is crazy. Even now it's wild.

Fun fact is that originally the machines weren't using humans for energy, the body would make a crappy battery biologically speaking, the original idea is that the machines were using human brains as CPUs to process information, but then they thought this concept would be too complicated for most people so they changed it to batteries.

I was WAY too young to appreciate this one when it first came out. The visuals were beyond anything I'd seen at the time, but the rest? Yikes. I was so disturbed by the scenes of Neo being "bugged," then later unplugged from The Matrix that I really couldn't get into the rest. Once I revisited it as an adult, it all made sense to me, and I saw what a game-changer it really was. Seeing it on the big screen for its 20th anniversary screening was even better.

The "Energy/Battery Power" part was (allegedly) supposed to be "Computing Power of the Brain", and it would make a lot more sense - humans would be the computers on which the matrix itself was running. That also explains the agents literally seeing and hearing anything people plugged into the Matrix can see and hear, and agents being able to take over human bodies in the simulation. There was (allegedly) some executive meddling before it became "Energy/Battery Power", because it was "easier to understand" (while actually physically unsound). As for simulations in fiction, there was quite a lot of that being explored in Star Trek - TOS and TNG.

Something most people don't notice. the Sunglesses represent power. every time someone takes them off. or they get broken. its someone putting down, or losing their power. Notice Neo only have glasses on a few times this whole movie. because most of the movie he's confused and not in power. Agent smith takes his sunglasses off when "leveling" with Morpheus during the interrogation. etc.. watch back through and you'll start to notice.

Few things, first and foremost, you have to watch the video where they edit the subway fight scene between Neo and Agent Smith to where all of the punches Neo throws on Agent Smith are all the throat chop hits, it's super funny. Second, if you haven't figured it out yet these movies have a huge Christian tone to them in that everything, including the name of Morpheus ship, is something out of the Bible, when Agent Smith is talking about the first Matrix he's talking about the Garden of Eden. I haven't yet watch your reaction of the other 2 films at the time of typing this, I will this is just where I am now, but Neo is not "the one" Agent Smith is, I'm going to watch your other reactions to see if you figure it out and I will explain more on part 3 if I don't see someone else has, which I'm pretty sure someone has. It's kind of like how the original 3 Star Wars films make you think that Luke is "the one" when it's really Anakin/Darth Vader.

The mass media is the matrix that tells us to obey and that we need leaders instead of living our own free life.

For me, the two most anxiety-inducing moments in movies are the Bride being burried in Kill Bill and Neo losing his mouth. Uuuugh
