People don't really understand how looking at a solar eclipse works. Just to be clear: looking at it has the same effect of looking at the Sun on a normal day. Of course, it won't matter if you look at it for a short moment. The problem is if you keep staring long enough. That said, if you're looking at the Sun in a really bright day at 12pm, you start to realize right from the beginning that your eyes don't feel right, so your body has the urge to stop it. But, when a solar eclipse happens, looking is the main thought, plus it's gonna be darker (and therefore we kinda feel it's okay looking for a lot of time), but that's a false warning. Because your eyes are gonna be exposed to the sunlight just the same. So it might feel alright while you're there, observing, since it's not that sunny. But after some time (could be minutes, hours or days) something might feels wrong. And the long exposition is the reason why. And yeah, I know he was just joking. But I wanted to make it clear because I noticed some people think it's like ''Oh, I can't look for even 3 sec, or I'm gonna go blind'', and that's absolutely not true. Also, for those who are more sensible to light in general, everything is worse, of course.

this is wrong. Solar eclipses do indeed have a different effect on the eye than the normal sun. As the moon blocks the rays of light of the sun from reaching the earth, the rays of light from the sun would bounce off the moon back to the sun. This process creates a powerful beam of light. Of course, if the moon completely blocked the sun, looking at it would have no effect on ones eye. When the moon is slightly displaced from the path of the eclipse, the powerful beam of light that has been reflected multiple times would now strike the earth. If one was to look at the eclipse at that particular moment in time, well ur cooked. So the chances of that happening are minimal as that bright light(powerful beam of light) only appears for about 0.86 seconds.
