Giap's story is similar to many Viet kieu and Vietnamese overseas abroad. The resilience of the refugee immigration struggle combined with the eventual return home to support family and friends back in the motherland is something that is still on going today. It's an important historical and present sociological aspect of the Vietnamese diaspora that is seldom discussed even though it's apparent i almost every household past or present. Thank you to Giap for sharing his story. If anyone else wants their story told and our schedule aligns, then maybe it'll happen. Heck, Giap just reached out to me one day and I just came over to his house not even knowing a thing. And it turned out to be a great story, but also a great opportunity to share such a life.
Thanks to Giap for the chance to create this video and the main reason why I went back to Vietnam during the summer. When I left in March, I had no plans at all to return during the summer, but meeting him and his enthusiasm for sharing the Vietnamese diaspora and culture and his story made the decision a lot easier. Because of Giap, we have all of these Vietnam videos that I've released in the last few weeks and the next few weeks. Thank you Giap. Meeting one person can definitely change the course of our life. Who knows what's next?

Absolutely awesome documentary Kyle. I was watching many parts with tears in my eyes. My Vietnamese wife and son are living in Long Khanh, and I am a South African living in Cape Town, separated by diplomatic red tape, she alone may only visit me one month in a year. So I do a lot of commuting to Vietnam. ( I was there for Tet this year, my first). I really miss the sit down family feasts on the lounge floor, and the extended family support network. Well done!

Thank you for watching this video. Please share it with your friends and family. Post it on your Facebook too. By sharing this video with your peers, you can help me make more original content showcasing Vietnamese diaspora and beyond. I'm extremely proud of this particular video not only because it was a new kind of film making challenge for me, but it has themes that all Vietnamese abroad, Viet Kieu, refugees, and immigrants can relate to. Thank you to Giap for sharing his story. If I didn't meet him, I would have never had the chance to go back to Vietnam during the summer. He's the reason why there are videos of Vietnam lately and for the next few weeks to come. Thank you for the support. Vietnamese people in Europe, please send me a Facebook message. I'm traveling there soon to discover more interesting stories of the Vietnamese lives outside of Vietnam and would love to feature your interesting stories.

Kyle Le Dot Net you up your game with this vid Kyle...keep this format coming....Its interesting that many of the boat Viets...went on to lead very productive lives and eventually as money would allow they would sponsor their relatives to also come to America... so many started with nothing and ended up having alot financially and materially...some were extremely frugal and saved like the world was coming to a end...its not uncommon that a Viet will have upwards of 200.000 plus in the bank....at end of life...generally...A migrated Viet will still keep his closet inner circle of only other Vietnamese and additionally only marry a Vietnamese...its hard if not impossible to (truly)penetrate their culture or society even here in America....im glad to see this story....and glad he is happy (finally)

Just wanna tell those people who has family members living in different countries do not feel frustrated when your family members send back a little money please cuz it is so hard for them to make that money and their life here is even harder than over there. we dont have time to rest sometimes dont even have time to eat. we have to worry about how can we earn enough money every day.

Thanks, Kyle for this video about the Vietnam diaspora. I was living in Tucson Arizona in 1995 and remember tutoring a family of Vietnamese through a volunteer program directed by the Tucson Catholic Association. It gave me an experiencing of a lifetime during those 8 months. I really wish I could have kept in contact with the family. Excellent film of resistants and family honor.

Such a hard working and generous man, even to his dad and step family. I think it was therapeutic for him to finally expressed those emotions that he must have held in for a long time. Our parents generation are so self reliant, not only do they come empty handed and did not know the language. They were able to support their primary family plus their parents, and siblings back home. Another great story Kyle. Thank you so much for doing them for us. 💗

I have a degree in cinematography but my passion is editing and documentaries. My daughter is leaving for college in a few years and I am debt-free with a good financial cushion. I can't wait. This is real HUMAN LIFE stuff here. Do you dislike the father for what he did or the mother for letting it happen? There is no good answer here. As indifferent as his Vietnamese father seemed you know it had to literally break his heart to put his son on a boat with little to no hope but more than he could offer. The depth of emotion this man has experienced is more than most 10 people will in a lifetime. The human desire to live and thrive is amazing. I have lived in 18 countries and people simply don't understand the reality of poverty when they come from Western countries. Still, most of these people find happiness in everyday life without a $300000 house and a 75" flatscreen. Excellent job on the documentary itself. Great transitions and B roll footage.

I don't usually comment on videos but this one is by far the best video you've done yet Kyle and I've watched almost all of your videos (I'm getting there soon!) since I found you out. This video is much different than your other travel videos because this one really showcases your capabilities as a filmmaker and a storyteller. One of my great uncles loves your travel/food videos I might add. About Uncle Giap, his story is beautiful and you were able to capture it and turned it into something much more special, a work of art. I just want to give him a hug hearing what he had to go through as a child and how his thoughts evolved over times. He shows a huge sense of family and good karma. I wanted to say more but my thoughts are all over the place now so I guess I'll stop it here. Amazing work so thank you and hope to see more!! :)

Nice episode. This story is a representation for most of the Vnamese boat people who fled VN in the late 70's & 80's myself included. We are the sandwich generation, we sacrifice and endure hardship to hold everything together. We're somewhat like the Vietnam war veterans who got caught between politics and patriotism. These scars will forever be imprinted upon our souls 'til we're 6 feet under. Keep up the great work and God bless!

I spent 1968 in Vietnam as a 21 year old army officer. I loved Vietnam and the Vietnamese people who treated me very well. My father was a WW2 veteran of the war in the Pacific who came home and abandoned his family. I joined the Army in 1965 to prove to my father that I was a worthy person. He never wrote to me and when I got home from the war I went to visit him. I told him the US should not be in Vietnam and that we were going to lose the war. He threw me out. I went to visit my uncle in California and he threw me out too because I had long hair and a moustache (?!?!?!?!). I have been shunned by my family all my life and like thousands of Vietnam veterans I have lived as an outsider in my own country. I have more in common with Vietnamese than I do with Americans. I follow all these vids about Vietnam and I am happy that so many Vietnamese have made a life for themselves like Mr. Giap. Yes, we will carry our scars to the grave. May the peace of Christ be with all the survivors.

Most Fathers in Vietnam are alcoholic, mine included. I'm blaming it on the lack of a hobby outside of work. Mine turned to alcohol because it is easily accessible/affordable. Most also doesn't have a great relationship with their spouse due to them getting married so early into their adulthood, the alcoholism doesn't help either.

Anna S its a vicious cycle if the father does not want to take part in the child's life there's not much that child could do. From myself my father left I have to kids my own I love them more than the world itself I can never ever do what my father did to me. As the comment below is very right most bothers turn to alcoholism it's a very vicious cycle. We have to break the cycle.

Kyle, that was an absolutely kick-ass documentary. Terrific in every way. I'm no film expert, but I loved all of it: the cinematography, the editing, the mix. It was incredibly moving, even more so when we think about how many "Giaps" there are in the US (and elsewhere). This docu is worthy of PBS, at least. Great job. I'd seen one or two of your regular videos, although honestly I can't remember what made me see the first one. But you can be sure I'll be watching more. Kyle, this is by far your best video yet and I am your regular follower. Thank you for putting together such an expertly styled documentary. Your story-telling skill is at a very high level exceeding many other documentaries videos from other highly-funded sources on TV... I like how you initially introduce the producer, yourself, with an enlightening clip of yourself either enjoying a bowl of noodle soup or a sandwich...The music selection is perfect and switching back and forth between scenery from VN and US is fascinating. Those drone videos footage were amazing... Overall, a very touching story of Mr. Giap (my last name is Giap, believe or not...) you had put together that many of us do not have a chance to tell... or know how to tell it as effectively as you had done. For that I thank you. This documentary video certainly deserves an "AMATEUR CINEMATOGRAPHY AWARD" for 2019. Again, thank you and I look forward to seeing many other future works.

Beautiful family and children. This man did very well. This also shows why many Asians that come to the U.S. do very well. Americans typically don't see the conditions and lifestyle one has to go through in Asia. When they come to the U.S., they work so hard, while most American children don't see the opportunities they were born into. Before my father came to the U.S. in the 70s, he literally lived in a hut.

virgendeguadalupe virgen Nope. What I'm saying is kids complain about the dumbest shit. That's because they live in fantasy land instead of working and making their own dreams come true. They want a good life, but don't want to work for it. Those kids, when they run into a challenge, they're good at giving up.

Nice video Kyle. I have much respect for Mr. Giap giving back in so many ways: taking advantage of his opportunities in this country to better himself; appreciation for his adoptive family and remaining a big part of their lives; raising his own beautiful family; and not forgetting where he came from and doing what he can to improve their lives. He is a loving father to his own children and a loving son to his Vietnamese family a half-a-world away. God bless him.

I also must say, this here has an almost professional quality to it. A big part of the attraction of course is the wonderful and emotional story told by Mr. Giap. And to all here "could have done this and that". It came out well for the family and that is what counts.

Very touching and fascinating story. As an American who remembers the war and the era of Vietnamese immigrants coming to America, it is interesting to get an inside story of what an individuals life was like before and upon arrival to the US. Thank g-d for the generous spirit and nature of people that opened their hearts to others less fortunate. Thanks for a great doc.

You were lucky to meet Giap, because he is such a bright and honest personality for the camera. I think most of the people who like the video are responding to that. Personally, I would like to add something no one else yet has mentioned, about the quality of the filmmaking. The editing is unusually smart, pointing to all kinds of contrast and comparisons without being too obvious, treating the viewers with respect that they will pick up on the details. It gives the doc a special energy and intelligence. Very impressive. Congratulations to both you and Giap.

The line... I don’t know what happiness is? Brought tears to my eyes. I felt his pain as the feeling when your “dad” choose his other family over you. As you get older your thoughts changes and you tend to look for the positives in their choices. Most cultures have the “back home” , commitment to help those in the old country, which is mostly financial. It’s a cultural “thing”. We feel it’s important to give back. Thank you for sharing. I love the toilet story, something s we take for granted .

Oh how funny I kept thinking Giap looked familiar then saw that snippet of the video his daughter created on KZbin interviewing him and his wife and realized that's where i saw him from. Giaps a great mentor story that life doesn't always start off perfect but with a little luck and lots of hard work it can def get there one day.

My family helped settle many Vietnamese people when they started coming here in the 70s. we lived in Dumont, NJ. in Bergen County. I'm still in touch with a lot of those guys. By coincidence my wife and stepson are from Saigon. We meet on Facebook years ago, and they are living here now about 4 -5 years. I've been to Vietnam 10 times now and look forward to traveling there again.

I laughed and I did my best not to cry. A touching story. I grew up in hard times which was often sad but I remember being tickled by the lyrics of the song, Tie Me Kangaroo Down Mate. The guys in Vietnam taught me the Vietnamese cuss words which I proudly said to the Vietnamese hooch maid who was young and cute. She called me Number 10 GI. I could relate to not using the toilet right. When I went to Japan, there was a Japanese funnel commode which looked awkward to use. Luckily I found the American style toilette. You are a good person. Your story is similar to Joseph's story in the Bible. God bless you and your family.

I feel that was a very insensitive question.. how the hell could he feel happiness when he was Soo poor he struggled to get meals his own father treated him as secondary to his step siblings. .then was made to feel ungrateful .. his child hood was sad in deed🥺💙. Then put in a boat alone. .. not understanding the purpose. He is a good man his adoptive parents instilled great values to his moral core. I would be proud to have in my family or as a friend. God Bless 🙏✨

Giap is very fortunate to have met his American family. They look like wonderful people and they did a good job raising him because his kids look like great kids. Even though he wasn't shown love from his biological parents the way he wanted, they obviously love him. His father surely made many mistakes in raising Giap but he loved him dearly and most likely spent his life savings to send Giap on that boat. Thanks Kyle for making this video even though I cried a lot, it was a good video and I really enjoyed watching it. Keep up the good work!
