@@isabellind1292 It's funny how often the same Colt Detective Special appears with a faux-silencer affixed. If you know anything about firearms, you know (the vast majority of) revolvers can't be effectively silenced due to the cylinder gap. I guess it was simple ignorance that caused that prop gun to be used that way so many times? Compact automatics that _could_ be effectively silenced appear a few times in the original series (I can remember two; the Colt Pocket Hammerless from "The Greenhouse Jungle" and a Walther PP from "Playback".) Dr. Keppel's nickel-finish 1911 with pearl grips is by far the coolest prop firearm on the show. Between his taste in clothes and his taste in firearms, Keppel's one stylish fella.

I love watching the beginning over and over, but I think the end is silly. You couldn't convict someone for murder on a contact lens, even if the corpse wasn't wearing them, or make Brimmer fall for the trap.
@rdrrr
@rdrrr 11 күн бұрын
@@treasurehunteruk9718 I think the idea is that the contact lens doesn't really matter, Brimmer is incriminating himself by attempting to tamper with something he _believes_ to be evidence. It's essentially an admittance of fault by conduct, and it'd be very difficult to give an innocent explanation for breaking into a garage at night and rifling through the trunk of a car. It wouldn't be enough for a conviction on its own, but combined with the other circumstantial evidence Columbo collected (such as the victim's wounds from Brimmer's ring), it could paint enough of a picture to convince a jury.
@RedheadLondon
@RedheadLondon 8 күн бұрын
@@rdrrr Columbo could not have known Brimmer would have fallen for it. He might have realised it was a bluff. A similar ending was the Uneasy Lies the Crown where Columbo tries the bluff with the tooth filling and assumes the criminal will fall for it..
@rdrrr
@rdrrr 8 күн бұрын
@@RedheadLondon Yeah, best excuse I can give for that contrivance is Columbo figured out Brimmer's personality well enough to feel like he would probably fall for it. But you're right, it was a gamble and if Brimmer didn't go for it Columbo would have a _lot_ of explaining to do.

This was one of two episodes that included Academy Award winner Ray Milland. It was remarkable how many such renowned actors appeared in this series. Here's an example of a master actor doing their work. There is a scene in this episode where Milland's character "Arthur Kennicutt" goes to the morgue to identify his wife's body. The expression of overwhelming grief on his face was absolutely genuine. Then, when they leave and go into the waiting area, Columbo gives him a cup of coffee out of the vending machine and they talk for a while. At the conclusion of this scene as Columbo walks away, pay close attention to Milland -- his body language and facial expressions. He's going to take a drink of coffee but you can see the grief just wash over him as he puts his coffee down. It's a remarkable performance.

I too "LOVE" the glasses montage! Very weird & surreal. But i "THINK" the reason it sometimes gets cut is because (while it's SUPER well done) - it's not completely "necessary" for us to understand what's going on. Heaven forbid - to save time (for commercials) if some station producer must commit the blasphemy of cutting out part of Columbo - that glasses montage would be the one to cut. But yea- i think it's a good segment too.

@@WatchitforDays It is kind of odd, this early in the series, to hear Columbo casually allude to his home address. As the writers tightened things up, it became clear that Columbo does not want any suspect knowing anything about him - including his first name. Fascinatingly, the only other guy who knew where Columbo lived was was another professional investigator: Brenner/Steinmetz from IDENTITY CRISIS. Everyone else gets some shuck-and-jive.

Columbo (and Peter Falk) happened to be very popular in Iran before the revolution, and he still is, especially since his Persian voice actor (Manouchehr Esmaeili) used a specifically accent to dub Peter Falk which matched his original quite well. :) Oh, definitely! I adore Columbo and I adore Peter Falk, but unfortunately, people talking while chewing, swallowing, slurping, forking more food into their mouths? AGH! I have to leave the room. I love this recap! This episode is in my personal top 10. I love the effect of scenes played over Robert Culp's lenses, and I love Ray Milland's speech about his marriage. And of course I love the ending. I've watched several of your Columbo Chronicles investigating the episodes. You should be proud of your videos. They're informative, entertaining, perceptive, and contain very detailed facts. A while back I included an homage to Columbo in a collection of short stories. And though the investigator in the story isn't called Columbo his style and delivery is very reminiscent of him. Keep up the excellent work on your videos, and when you're ready I'd love your reviews of James Garner's Rockford Files.

I especially thought the montage in the glasses was a nice touch. This was the first murder so far that wasn’t premeditated. It would have seemed unrealistic if the killer hadn’t been in shock for a while, struggling to figure out what to do next… although, it wouldn’t have been very interesting for the audience to just watch the man stand and stare and maybe talk to himself. The montage allowed them to show, not tell, what the character was thinking (and ended up doing), while also demonstrating that he _did_ need time to take in the situation and think hard.
@TheHAM1980

The replacement picture behind the door at Brimmer’s apartment looks like a Rothko. If not an original, then a poster. Rothco was a enormously influential post-war painter who specialized in a few large squares of color on a canvas. One of his painting sold for $86 million in 2012.

One thing that never was clear to me… did Columbo plant the contact lens in the trunk of the car? Or was it there by coincidence as he claims? I suspect he planted it, because the other option was a one-in-a-million chance. And with the case being “solved” by finding the lens in Brimmer’s hand, that’s too good for coincidence. The only trouble is that Columbo gives no indication that he might have planted it, other than letting us know he had placed the potato up the tailpipe. Also, it appears that Brimmer climbed into the trunk of the car because it was parked over that trench at the maintenance shop. It might have been hard to access all parts of the trunk standing at the edge of that trench. But the first time I watched it, I also wondered why he was climbing into the trunk.
@WatchitforDays

@@WatchitforDays Yes, I think he had to have planted it. Falk delivers the line so matter-of-factly, however, that it made me wonder if that was how it was intended. I rewatch the series every 3-4 years and I just started another rewatch a few days ago. Most of the episodes in the first 5 seasons I'm guessing will be 4-5 cigars. The only possible episode in the first 5 season rated less than 4 cigars would be "Last Salute to the Commodore" - a bit too cheesy for me and Columbo acted really weird in the episode. Season 8 is where I start to not really enjoy the episodes. Columbo becomes more cartoonish and the supporting cast are less realistic than the earlier seasons. The lowest rated episodes for me are "Murder with Too Many Notes", "Columbo Goes to College", and the worst one of all is "Murder in Malibu". Just my 2c
