Awesome awesome AWESOME-ER! Being a retired mobile detailer (4 spine surgeries in 4 years) as you can probably tell by looking behind me at my polishing pads in my profile pic, I love seeing these reviews. I use to do a ton of reviews for Autogeek back in the early 2000's...I drove a yellow Ranger....and genuinely loved being surprised by the underdog product! As I was watching you, JRGo, use it, I could tell it was doing something special. I think honestly, because you didn't use a machine. With plastic, I think hand sanding is needed. Maybe the machine is making to much heat or can't contour enough, but the hand is better. A DA is better than a drill 100%!!!! I wish you would try it with a 3in pad and plate. Remember, with a DA you get more cut with a smaller pad as well. Once again thank for the time you both spent doing this!!!!

interesting results! I used the Turtle Wax hand-sanding kit for years and then awhile back switched to the 3M with the drill sanding pads. they both work great but I'm too lazy to do all that hand-sanding with the Turtle Wax kit these days. I am definitely impressed with how well the RainX restorer worked though! for headlights that aren't too far gone, I've found Meguiar's PlastX with a foam drill polishing pad also works very very well for a quick restore. but the kits with multiple & progressively finer sanding pads/discs (and sealant) will always give the best results. the only caveat is you have to be careful with the drill-based kits - if you use too high a speed/too much pressure while sanding, you can actually burn swirl marks deep into the plastic surface of the headlight and those are a real son of a biscuit to buff out. ask me how I know 😬

Used the Turtle Wax one myself about 7 years ago on my truck - was blown away at how good it was. The protectant held up well too - didn't fade in the year left that I had it before getting another vehicle. For upkeep and general polishing, Meguiar's PlastX is *really* good - it is a mild polish as well as a chemical deoxidizer it can turn a set around in a couple minutes, like the RainX one, _but_ .... you have to apply some sort of UV protectant or they'll just start yellowing again. The UV protectant/sealant is the one critical thing in the long run if the headlights are to _stay_ looking good. That or the government allowing glass headlights again. ;)
@Lili-xq9sn Жыл бұрын
What uv protector do you use???? For instant clarity, I just use acetone nail polish remover. Makes them crystal clear in one pass. Don't make more than one pass...additional passes cause the fog again. Don't get it on the paint.
@Dakiraun Жыл бұрын
@@Lili-xq9sn I haven't found one that lasts all that long yet. I tried waxes (normal and ceramic) that supposedly have UV protection, but best they'll do is maybe 3 months. Tried Meguiar's "Keep Clear" headlight coating, which is a clear coat paint, and that works for a lot longer. I find it's very soft though and doesn't dry as smooth as normal clear coats. A light buffing after applying it smoothes it out. Depending on exposure, the Meguiar's can hold up 6 to 12 months. I don't think one can do much better than that since any coating you put on is going to be a sub-millimeter thick thing, and the sun will easily break it down. Just have to keep re-doing the lights every so many months.

Great job guys!! I have been servicing and detailing cars for over 50 years, and overall, have ALWAYS found turtle wax products (of every kind) to hold their own against all challengers, even ones that cost many times more. One thing I might add (and it's just from my personal experience) is that no product out there offers really long term UV protection. We live in a world where all headlights are now plastic, and plastic WILL fog and have to be periodically cleaned and polished (and eventually replaced). That's why I no longer waste time "coating, sealing, etc." with expensive "uv protectors." If such were possible, the folks who make the plastic headlights would do it at the factory-- and we would never even have to have this discussion. Good luck with your business !

Thank you for sharing! Here is a tip for you. Please consider using Meguires Headlight clear coating G 17804 after cleaning and polishing headlights.. I have tried several kits, but found the electric drill pad attachments 500-3k grit , with compound are easier and quicker. Use water as a lubricant first on base polishing, then switch to quick wax as a lubricant. They all look clearer after using the clear coat regardless of the brand.. They last about 6-12 months and are easily restored, This works much better than using a clear coat Rustoleum paint, which seems to melt the plastic and may yellow in time..

One tip on the old fashioned sanding kits. Park it outside, and put the garden hose on fast drip, sitting on top, dripping down the face, and then you can sand away. The continuous water keeps you from burning the lens and keeps the paper from loading up. Used the sanding disk kits for a long time, but that RainX kit will be my next purchase.

Definitely a fan of the big 3M Ultra kit. Used the old version of it on our E46 325i and it made a huge difference that lasted for quite awhile.

The best headlight restoration kit is the Sylvania one hands down. The other ones don’t even come REMOTELY close. I’ve used the Sylvania one on headlights that were extremely extremely pitted and yellow and discolored and it literally makes it look like an absolute 10/10 brand new headlight. The lense is 100% clear and you can’t see any imperfections at all from any angle. It almost makes it look like the lense isn’t even there. I just used the meguiars and the turtle wax one and they were like a 6.5/10 compared to Sylvania. They made the lense clean and white, and definitely more clear, but they leave a haze on it and lots of imperfections. The Sylvania one comes with a wipe on clear coat, it’s different then a “clarifying wipe”. It literally makes it look perfect. The two main important things are the quality of the sandpaper, and it has to have a clear coat. The Sylvania one also comes with a spray that you put on first that washes off the yellow grime, then you use the rubbing compound with sandpaper, then you use the clear coat. It will look like crap when your all done, but then you wipe the clear coat on it and it magically looks perfect.

Well there's a recent test of all leading restoration kits in which 3M was number one,where heavy oxidation and old clearcoat needs tobe removed, You won't find better than 3M!!

About how long do the headlights last clean after application?

I just use the 1000 grit, a polishing compound and then ceramic coating to finish it off. It's the best that proves itself time and time again... 💯

Just used the TurtleWax on a 15 year old Saturn Vue..looks almost new. There is something about that spray lube that makes the sanding both easy and crystal clear. Sand first..then use the polish. Their directions are kind of backwards. They don't give you enough sealant for multiple cars so I purchased a bottle of "sealant only" so I could use up all of the other kit. Throw in some LED bulbs and you will have an incredible upgraded night driving experience.

I recently used the 3M ultra kit on my '10 Corolla. I spent a good amount of time and dry sanded both the 500 and 800. It also specifies to use the sealing wipe in straight horizontal lines, starting with the top. I got results that look like the turtle wax kit did they basically look new and my headlights were bad enough to have cracking in them.

I used the, CERAKOTE Ceramic Headlight Restoration Kit, for my 2013 Corolla: and it has the 3000 wet sand, and 2000 wet buffer. I just did mine today, and my headlights look brand new!! And same, no circular patterns: only horizontal- except for step 1: you can use circular motions because they’re just oxidation wipes. 4 steps, takes about 20 minutes in total: just had to let my car sit for 60 minutes. I’ll recommend this product to anyone looking to easily restore their headlights, especially Women!

I have used the same Mother's Nulens and it didn't last that long. The Sylvania head light restore kit works really well. It's a 3 stage wet sand and has uv block clear coat last step that actually made the lens look almost new. Don't know how long it lasts cause I applied it last week, but I do like the Sylvania better than the Nulens.

Ok, so in the past, I have used the wipe new kit, awesome! It was not locally available, I bought the Simonize kit at lunch, went back to work and listened to this video... on my way home returned the Simoniz kit and bought the Turtle Wax kit and it came out amazing!! Thanks for the review!! 🎉

For me i have used both the 3M and the Turtle wax kit and while Turtle woks its a lot of work with those small pads. Wish they where slightly bigger. 3M also gave me the best end result and was easier to use so its my go to choice.

300K! FYI, the CERAKOTE Ceramic Headlight Restoration Kit has the sauce for multi-year longevity with its bundled ceramic UV coating

Yep this is all I use anymore and I use it on every headlight i see! 🙈 De-oxidize (I use rubbing compound), 2000 grit hand pass, 3000 grit, then clean. Cerakote wipe simple and not too messy, some practice necessary... Lasts longer and looks better than any other kits I've used!

@@CamCanCars the fact that they'll sell you just the protectant wipes in bulk vs the whole kit so you can BYO sandpaper etc is awesome too

I used the CERAKOTE for plastic restoration. It worked great. Maybe JR could compare different trim restorers on these SUVs.

Yeah I did that on Amazon and thought it said only enough for 10 cars; so pleasantly surprised to see 50 packets of step 3 in box. I haven't used Cerakote trim restore yet, but have had good luck with Chemical Guys VRP on most stuff. Would love to see a comparison!

Cerakote all the way. I am extremely impressed on ease of use and results. I think it’s $25 on Amazon. I recommend you use masking tape around the headlight before applying the ceramic wipe.

In the last couple of years Turtle Wax has really put out some great products. They've started being more visible on the "socials" and I've found that most of their recent Si/Ceramic products "got game" - they're not really a "joke" anymore - The "Wax n Dry" is my go-to for post wash spray (although it doesn't last much past the next rain). Stuff usually goes on sale here mid to late spring I'll buy my year's supply....

Turtle wax kit is the best. I actually did 3 cars just on one kit. Definitely worth it!!
@robertstrong10072 жыл бұрын
I found for me the best outcome was sanding. Wet sand from 800-1000, then 1500 then 2000. Good coat wax after, headlights still look good after 1 year.
