Tesla ON THE CHEAP: Can I Make My Chevy Volt SELF-DRIVING?

If there was a hybrid Tesla I'd probably buy that, but I bought a 2017 Chevy Volt Premier instead. The Volt Premier has all the driver assistance options, but that doesn't quite add up to Autopilot or Full Self Driving. It wasn't designed to really steer the car by itself, though it will keep you in your lane by bouncing off the lines. We're going to try and fix that by installing a Comma Three from Comma AI and using openpilot to drive the car. Once we get this figured out I'll be going on road trips all over the country and letting the Volt knock those miles out for me.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZbin videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Yup. 2019 and later Toyotas do a decent job, too. I've noticed a tendency to want to drift into off ramps (preferring the right hand painted line?) when driving in the slow lane, but otherwise it's quite smooth and easy to interact with.

It's great to see a car enthusiast embrace self driving. I had a Tesla but was looking for something nicer for weekends and was test driving Porsches which have terrible to non-existent self driving. The sales guy told me that they were for driving enthusiasts and I apparently shouldn't even want the car to drive itself. But why would I want to drive on long highways and stop & go traffic? I'm with JR: use the self driving for the boring stuff, drive when it's fun. And BTW: the autopilot that comes free with the Tesla does just about all you need for those criteria.

My 2019 CRV-Ex also has the LKAS but it doesn't ping-pong, it tracks the car very well in the lane. Also the intelligent cruise works like your Bolt, it slows down, creeps and as long as the traffic ahead doesn't come to full stop it will accelerate by itself without touching the breaks. If it full stops, just tap the accelerator and it resumes.

No matter how advanced these cruise controls get, they always steer you straight over every pothole on the damn road and you're out of pocket for new tyres. I guess they suit countries/states that do a better job of their road network. I like the Volt. It's an EV that makes sense; short range electric, gas power generation (still electricity) for longer commutes, but the battery-only fanbois call them hybrids now.

Tesla is working on that one. The latest updates share road quality data with others in the area (via tesla servers) but it doesn't yet "avoid" low quality road sections it's just data gathering now. Apparently on the X and S it will adjust the suspension though for rougher bumpier roads it knows about already.

The new Bolt EUV isn't much more than you bought the Volt for and has OEM Super Cruise. They're supposed to drop the price of it next year when the government credit runs out. Not as fast as a Tesla, but seemingly pretty good for the money. Not to mention their autonomous cruise is based on a camera and your eye focus, and not the touch of the wheel. I have an M3P with auto pilot and have used the FSD subscription, and it wants more feedback on the wheel than I would usually give it when I'm must driving down the road.

I'm finding that having another semi-intelligent entity at work on long trips means there are more eyes on the road. So far, it doesn't so much feel autonomous as it does having a copilot or co-driver.
@CarswithNash
@CarswithNash 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cartier_specialist Firstly ABS brakes do not stop you faster, that was never there intent, they allow you to steer under full braking and maintain control of the vehicle, they have a real and definite benefit that I’m not denying. However a skilled driver in a vehicle without ABS can out brake an ABS system in most situations. The problem is the more driver aids you offer the more people multitask while driving and the less driving skills they develop. Drivers are getting worse and worse and the cars are partially to blame for that. Autonomous cars still have an accident rate more than double that of the average human driver. so if you are relying on the autonomous aids of your car to get you there safely you are a pretty bad driver.
@CarswithNash

To be clear, autopilot, advanced autopilot, and FSD are all different things. This system operates closest to autopilot which is standard equipment in all teslas. Advanced autopilot is 6k and includes red light detection, lane changes, summon, and some other stuff, and FSD (12k) gets you access to the beta for the actual FSD stuff which does turns and roundabouts and everything

Great stuff here. I'm still trying to find good cruise control though. Does this help with cruise at all? I have yet to drive a car that didn't jump up into high gears on every stupid hill. It just seems so easy to 1) predict the hill is coming 2) give a wider range of mph so that when it slows down on a small hill it just accepts that you'll go down in speed for a few seconds.
