Cars have gotten expensive, there's no denying that. Gabe's transmission on his van went out this morning so we headed out on a mission to buy a running driving car for less than half the price of a used transmission for the van ($2,000). We came up with this 2010 Kia Forte Ex, let's check it out.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZbin videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

I bought a brand new Kia Sorento in 2016, worst car I've ever owned. Only had 50k miles and I've already had to replace multiple electronics and needed a new A/C! Kia may be easier to work on, but at least with my Honda I probably won't ever have to work on it!

And early 2000s Hondas are quite easy to work on. Maybe by 2010 things were getting trickier, but Kia/Hyundai basically is tech that's 10 years behind the Japanese brands.

My mom had a 2012 Forte (almost exact to this one). Bought it new when Kia started growing, maintained it meticulously... As the years rolled on, our 2.0 started to experience the notorious piston slap. It probably started around 60k miles. Brought it to multiple Kia dealerships, all of which claimed it sounded normal. Kept driving it to about 110k. The piston slap was getting loud at this point, sounded like a diesel when cold. At that point, my mom traded it in for a Toyota. It was a good car to us for those miles, but the sounds it made definitely told us that wouldn't last much longer. It is truly a shame that Kia/Hyundai decided to lapse on engine quality control once the 2010s hit, because the rest of the car was truly trouble free. You would think they'd be invested in fixing their problems by now, but they aren't. They just keep getting more and more unreliable the newer they get. I wonder when their reputation will catch up with them, sorta like Nissan with their CVTs.

Same dude as a mechanic that left the industry Hyundai an Kia are cheap junk some of their line ups are hit or miss but majority of them are junk that depreciates just as fast as it needs money for repairs…. My friends has a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with 250k miles of motor an trans but she has put a lot of money into it to get it there vs a Corolla you wouldn’t barely touch to get to 250k while other friends have needed 2 motors before 150k miles on their kia an another needed 3 engines in a sonata that they keep getting replaced for free bc of a recall an it has 230k miles I had a 05 Elantra I sold it in May after fixing it bc it sat for months an I went out bought a Lexus GS300 an planned to build it as a project refurbishing it but it ended up being more reliable than the Elantra so I just sold it off… Never leaving Lexus or Toyota again an only did it bc the Elantra was a steal low miles an needed a car asap few years ago… When mechanics telling people not to get Hyundai or Kia they should listen bc someone had a good experience in one of them doesn’t trump the fact most owners have had major repairs before 100k miles….

Warranty for the 2liter Kia shows the engine problems began some where in the 2010 year. If you worked on these later years there are a host of people that would like to know how you got rid of cold startup knock .Mine made so much noise on winter days it would turn heads in the parking lot at work! This car delivered in june of 2011 went back to the dealer the first winter , when it was 10 degrees f .They said they heard nothing! I had done most of my mechanic apprenticeship years ago, & imediately knew they weren't going to help me .There were up to 6 class action law suits in canada at one point.

People love to turn their nose up at Kia's and Hyundai's, and there are certainly some known issues with their later engines, but I think there are two things that get overlooked. Firstly, most of the people who buy these think maintenance schedules are a gentle selection (having previously worked at a quick lube chain, 10,000+ mile conventional oil changes were common), and they are overall quite easy to work on! They clearly tried to emulate Toyota and Honda designs from the 90's, and as a result, they have great serviceability. Even on many of their newer cars, a lot of the routine maintenance and repair items were clearly given thought.

That was an excellent deal for today's prices. What's crazy to me as I age, I see these 2010 cars and even into the '00s as modern cars still in my mind, but that's a 14 year old car. My first car was a 1992 Ford Tempo and I got it in 2005 for $500 with under 100k miles, and that car was 13 years old when I bought it and to my 15 year old brain that felt like it was ancient. Now I own a 23 year old truck and an 11 year old car with 221k and 196k miles respectively but they don't feel as old as my first car felt when I was 15.

Decent radio, cold A/C, great for a tall person, and a shape so boring cops forget it by the time they look away. Just this year the electronics are finally beginning to get flaky. I happened to be searching CList this morning for cars under $1000 and there were about eight that I considered worth seeing, including a beautiful LeSabre with less than 200k miles. Those are 300k+ cars. But it had some body rust, so that's something I'd need to check the underside to see if there is significant damage. Expand search to nationwide, find a local mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection, rent a U-Haul trailer, bring it home. Might need to also rent a truck or borrow from a friend. But totally doable, with low risk.
@SHO1989
@SHO1989 Ай бұрын
This was probably a rental car in it's earlier days. Rental company cars get all kinds of accidents and they usually cheap out on the body work because they know it will just need more body work later. And, they know the car will bring nothing at auction because it was a rental car. Given the excellent price you got on this, I'd be tempted to hit up the junk yards to replace those seats and door panels with ones that are in better shape. Not every Kia Forte started out as a rental car and there's probably some nice clean interior bits for cheap waiting out there. I rented a Forte new in 2010 and was impressed for what it is. Everything well laid out and logical. More options than the price point deserved at the time. I liked it and would be happy to drive one.

In 2009 or 2010 when my wife needed a new car, we were looking at new Mini S's, VW GTI, BMW 1ers, Mazda3. "Nicer" small cars. Just on a lark we went to the Kia dealer cuz it was right next to the Mazda dealer. Everything we were looking at was $20K and up. There was one of these Forte's there, in a nice brown metallic color, with every option she wanted (Bluetooth, heated seats, cruise, sunroof) and I think sticker was $15,500, but without even haggling, the salesman was like 'I'll do it for $13,250.' It was SO tempting but Kia still had the stigma of being "Hyundai but even worse." Ended up buying a Mini for $24K or so, but man, that Forte would have been such a good deal.

Dig your channel, all the way from Southern Tip of Africa! It may be a long-term thing but, how about a review of cheap, basic cars from, say, the 50s to current time: what the expectations were through the years and what was available. I'm now 72, and my first drive was my grandmother's 1958 (in RSA) Morris Minor 1000, 948cc and about 34bhp. It had indicators (turn signals), lights and wipers (1 speed continuous); the heater was extra (not fitted to Grandma's car) and was either on, or off - you had to activate a valve under the bonnet (hood) for that. Now I have a 2010 VW Polo Vivo, the "basic" version of the previous Polo with a few advancements. And what do I have: all the above, plus heater, plus aircon, plus radio with USB capabilities, plus heated rear window, plus 2 speed wipers with 4 stage intermittent and a "one flick" function etc etc. How about it?

Got it for 12K under KBB, because the battery shorted out and killed the immobilizer. an eBay part and a new battery later and she runs like new. Terrific cars if you take care of them. First thing I did with mine after I got it running, was change all teh fluids, plugs, coils, PCV valve, and decarbonized the intake valves. Not much else you really need to do with a GDI engine. Oil change every 3K miles.

Previously owned a 2006 Elantra that I bought new and rocked to 150,000 miles on the Beta 2 engine. Also owned new a 2007 Accent and a 2008 Tiburon, never had an issue. My wife currently drives a 2019 Ioniq Linited with the Ultimate package, no issues. Think you did pretty well. in 2022 I inherited a 2010 Forte with 150k miles on it. Same spec as yours. Mechanically mostly sound except some suspension bits, reeked of smoke and paint needed work. Cleaned up a couple things, finally ozoned the smoke away, and sold it for 8k CAD safetied and ready to plate. COVID was fun and profitable. 2 months ago we spent a lot of time hunting for a sub-1k car for a charity endurance race; best we could find was an 06 Civic DX 5spd with rust and clearcoat issues plus tired suspension for $800 CAD. We could have gotten it safetied to sell for about $1k more, had that been the goal, plus probably another $100 in body/detailing supplies to get it presentable. Bet it would have sold for 3-4k certified and ready to plate. There's not much out there running at that $1k USD / $1400 CAD pricepoint. Running/driving/safetied is probably $3k CAD / ~2k USD minimum right now where I'm at.

I miss when you could get a nice daily driver that wasn’t like 28-35k with a prolly 600 a month car payment with the high interest rates. Plus, insurance on some newer cars is like another car payment ontop of that.

PSA: In January 2023, State Farm announced that it would temporarily stop offering new auto insurance policies for some Kia and Hyundai models and trim levels in certain states. This decision was made after the Highway Loss Data Institute found that theft claims for 2015-2019 Hyundai and Kia vehicles were almost double those of other automakers. The institute believes this is because some Hyundai and Kia vehicles lack electronic immobilizers, which can make it easier for thieves to break in and bypass the ignition.
