The graphic novel is the only comic book in the Time Magazine list of 100 best books. The original story is a deconstruction of the superhero genre. That’s why it deviates from the tropes of traditional comic books like Marvel and DC. The movie is a great adaptation. It has some differences from the book mainly because it was necessary to include more action and less absurdity. It’s one of my favorite films. Very underrated. 🙂

Ooooooooo! Glad you watched this! The thing I usually don't like about Super heros is that *usually* they aren't realistic, or even internally consistent with their logic. Watchmen (and the boys as another great EG) rips that notion to shreds. What would it ACTUALLY be like if superman existed. He'd be like any other powerful human, V unlikely to be this incredibly kind figure. Watchmen and The Boys explore how horrific some actual superheros existing would likely be. It's social commentary, satire of the perfect super hero, and as a standalone piece of work it's incredible filmmaking! (commented before watching as I was so excited to see you react lol, REALLY hope you enjoyed it but I'll have to keep watching past 30 seconds to find out haha :D )

Alan Moore originally wanted to make this story about the Charlton Comics heroes that DC Comics had recently acquired. You can still see their DNA in this. Nite-owl = Blue Beeetle; Rorschach = The Question; Doctor Manhattan - Captain Atom; etc. The 1940s superhero group was the Minutemen. The Watchmen represented the next generation of heroes. The plot was inspired by an old episode of 'The Outer Limits'.

So during the opening credits, when they show the montage of the Olde Tyme superhero’s down the years. There’s the scene with the dark-haired woman hero, who is in a parade, and she grabs some woman and kisses her. That’s based on a real-life picture. After WW2, when all the soldiers returned to America, there was a “Welcome Back” parade for them. Some random navy dude sees a nurse, and gives her that kiss. (They interviewed her later. She did not know him, and was not happy he did that.). And some photojournalist just happened to catch it on camera. So in the movie here, you can see when the woman hero kisses her, there’s a navy guy looking pissed, ‘cause she beat him to the kiss. And she’s the hero that is murdered in her bed later, because they weren’t cool with Lesbians, back then. A couple years ago, HBO did a 1 season story of that world, but now. We find out that the first person to put on the mask and be a vigilante was the hangman guy. He did it because he was black, and he knew that nobody would believe the bad guys did the bad things, if there was a black man kicking their asses. So he wore a disguise, then other people wore masks too, and it just became a thing. They got Louis Gossett, Jr. to play 130yr old Hangman.

It's interesting you say knockoff because they kinda are. The mafia ran comic book company called Charlton Heroes which would eventually go under sometime in the 50s. But they did happen to get quite a few talented artists and writers who would eventually work for DC. And DC would eventually buy the rights to all the Charlton Heroes. The writer of Watchmen Alan Moore wanted to use the Charlton Heroes for this story but DC wouldn't let him because it was too controversial what he wanted to do. So instead, he created Watchmen as a replacement to mirror the Charlton Heroes. Nite Owl is Blue Beatle. Rorschach is The Question. Silk Spectre is Nightshade. The Comedian is Peacemaker. Dr Manhattan is The Atom. And Ozymandias is Thunderbolt, which is the only IP that wasn't bought by DC. So they are knock-offs. Just done in the best way possible.

Ozymandias is one of the best villains, for a comics standarts ofcourse, the kind of "villain" whose side you can easily take. His goal is clear and understandable, there is no egoism or vanity in his aspiration, he thought through everything in advance and carried out his plans to the end. Once again, sure there are many plot holes and inconsistencies in his plan, but that's a comics story, and by the standards of comics he is awesome.
@tonyb76156 ай бұрын
Wrong. Doing great evil for the best of reasons cannot be justified. If you're a sociopath and don't care about humanity, then sure. Otherwise you're a glorified Thanos.
@wakkadakka91926 ай бұрын
@@tonyb7615 Nah the Thanos plan was just dumb even by comics standards. Halving the population won't solve anything at all. Ozymandias plan was much simpler and actually had a logic in it. People are stupid, and scared people are even stupider. If people, in their stupidity and fear, are ready to destroy the entire planet - stop them by frightening them with something even more terrible is a completely logical solution. Like for example if today an Alien invasion will happen and creepy monsters will start attacking whole world - such conflicts like russia-ukraine or israel-palestine will immidiatly stop. The easiest way to unite people is to create a great threat for them, sometimes even just the illusion of a threat is enough. This is not some fictitious idea, this is a very real and effective method that has been used by many rulers around the world for thousands of years. And they still use it today.

Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series created by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins, published by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987. Watchmen focuses on six main characters: the Comedian, Doctor Manhattan, the Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Rorschach, and the Silk Spectre. These characters were originally based on the Mighty Crusaders[1] and then reworked in an unsolicited proposal to fit superhero properties DC had acquired from Charlton Comics in the early 1980s. Moore later based the team’s predecessors, the Minutemen, on the Mighty Crusaders. Since the publisher planned to integrate Charlton's superheroes into the main DC Universe and the script would have made many of them unusable for future stories, series writer Alan Moore eventually agreed to create original characters.

He is the same one who did Batman vs Superman and man of steel. He's an awesome director. I really wish they let him keep the DC universe.
