TheMutedVid no way to know. bitcoin could double in price soon or go down 50%. there is even the small chance of bitcoin going down to zero. Also, if you are sloppy with computer security, you could get hacked and lose everything that way. with this kind of volatility and uncertainty, it is imperative to only buy an amount you are completely ok with losing 100%. it is very risky. For me personally, I am invested for philosophical reasons (I want to support a system that removes the need for banks) - but I do keep in mind that bitcoin is an experiment. it is an absolutely fascinating one, but still an experiment.

i dont think you understand the concept behind it... think of bitcoins as an investment... the more people who invest the more scarce it is and at the same time individuals decide just how much a bitcoin is worth which leads to the fluctuation in price. if everyone got behind this system it would lead to a more established and equal economy where the GOV'T could not change/ alter it.... only the consumer/ producer. (meaning the gov't couldn't just increase production of it. people would just have to lower prices or raise depending on what the market is doing.... no depressions, no inflation. it would be equal.)

No, you can't "hack the bitcoins", The network and protocol itself is hack-proof. The only reason there's been so-called "hacks", is due to insecure 3rd party hosted exchanges and websites. People are stupid and keep giving their coins/wallets to insecure exchanges and 3rd party institutions who proceed to get their website hacked and thus lose their customers' coins. Solution? People need to learn to hold their own coins and secure them themselves instead of giving it to some piece of shit like Mt Gox exchange.

Depends how you look at it. $220 for 1 BTC may seem expensive, but the market cap is still only ~$3bil. As a newly emerging p2p tech, as well as a programmable money/transaction system without limitations, the technology could prove very key in the future. Compare the $3b market cap of BTC to that of Amazon gift cards which has a mcap of ~$15b. Currently, BTC as an all-around/general transaction system is valued lower than a single company's gift card cap. Thus, imo it should keep growing over the years, it's just going to take a while. The technology however (whether it be bitcoin or another implementation), will be around for good.

It's the illusion of value, and the illusion worked cause now people like me mine something that isn't physical. It is also like gold but better. If you want to transfer gold from the US to China, it would cost a ton of money to do and there is a chance someone could hijack the people delivering the gold. Bitcoin is almost free and instant, so almost no chance to steal it (hackers exist of course). Another reason why it has value is because no bank or government owns it, also it's basically a free way to get money with just a few investments involved

QTLuv paper money like the dollar does have value though. its value is tied to oil. all oil in the global market is bought and sold using the dollar so it has value (very unconventional but its how it is). even if the federal reserve wont stop fucking printing money. gold has value because its finite and can be reused if melted and remolded. but as far as i see, bitcoin's value is purely determined by supply and demand which is often inconsistent. i get that theres a finite supply (which makes it inflation-proof) but theres no reason for anyone to possess bitcoins other than because its finite. the sense of value it has is more illusory than gold. i can see some real advantages though, like you said, instant transferring. no govt intervention or legitimization. and its pretty much inflationproof because it will take a long time to mine and theres only a finite amount available. (but competitive crypto currencies that may become successful can act as inflation since they may add their own currency into circulation).

ShyanTheLegend You have some points, but gold still shouldn't be valuable because it can't do anything but look nice and shiny, its a weak metal, and isn't good at conducting. Finite supply of gold or not, the main reason its valuable is because it's shiny and that attracts people. Money only got popular because it was lighter and because it acted as an IOU for gold but then became something completely different from gold. Also bitcoin gets its value because of a lot of politics. Like I mentioned in my previous comment, no government owns it, it used to be completely anonymous (people would buy illegal items with it), wiki leaks was forced to use it because no other service wants to support wiki leaks, and finally because I said before, its all virtual meaning no physical transferring of cash or the risk of a bank being robbed. No need to pay for armored cars which cost hundreds of thousands to produce, no need for guards to deliver money, it just saves a lot of cash and labor and is easy to get with a few small investments. Honestly it truly is a great currency but not enough people care how it works or how it is beneficial because they are too busy trying to earn physical cash instead of virtual currency. I won't lie about my age, I'm 16 and I got into bitcoin because I wanted money but after I did a ton of research a while ago about bitcoin, I realized how useful it is and how complex it works which can prevent loads of corruption. I dream of a world where its only bitcoin.
