I just didn’t know it was an every show thing, I thought it was once in awhile. I get now that since the show is done in a week, no one is gonna remember their lines to multiple sketches in under a few days.

Zappa had everyone in the building rooting for him, which made his hosting gig's failure so shocking. He did the show earlier as a musical guest, got worked into a sketch about killer Christmas trees, and really seemed to enjoy himself and fit in. Apparently he was a lot more uncomfortable and defensive about getting stretched into doing multiple sketches, and maybe put off by the drug use that was in full force around many of the cast and writers.
@dovegrey13 жыл бұрын
I'm a huge Frank Zappa fan, but am not surprised he's on here. I was slightly amused by his antics, but also thought it was a bit cringe-worthy at times. He was known for keeping his musicians in line, and if one would have messed up like he did on the show, he would have fined them or let them go. I understand he didn't show up to read throughs, either. Too bad, he could be very funny so you'd think it would have been a great fit. The killer christmas tree bit from his shot as musical guest was pretty funny, though. I'm really amazed he's only number 19.

If you ever heard Spade and Carvey on Fly on the Wall podcast. They basically say the only way to do the show is to read the cue cards, the writers change jokes, and dialog right up to going on air. The first time seeing the joke literally happens on air sometimes.
@karaoconnoraliasraidra Жыл бұрын
They also need to stop listing, “The episode had self-deprecating meta humor,” as a reason. How many sketches over the decades have had self-deprecating meta humor? It’s one thing if the execution is botched or if they rely on it too much, but simply having it isn’t bad in and of itself. One episode from the 1990s had Steve Martin do an opening number about how they weren’t “gonna phone it in tonight” and it was great.

And to be fair, "SNL" itself is pretty much crap too. At least, it was when I was watching. Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz have to be some of the worst comedic actors I've ever seen. Both were notorious for "corpsing," or cracking up while in character when the script calls for the actor to be deadpan. Fallon in particular was notorious not only for smiling and spazzing at inappropriate times, but outright flubbing his lines and not even bothering to comb his hair before sketches so that he looked like he'd just woken up. Maybe that was deliberate; maybe Fallon was going for the "so-bad-it's-funny" effect. But to me, he always just looked sloppy.

But he was also terrific in "Christmas Miracle" when he, Cecily, and Kate's characters were transported to the North Pole.... Yeah, those sketches are really mostly Kate, but it's Cecily and guest star (in this case, Affleck) who have the more subtle part to play that also brings out the absurd humor.

The weird thing about Lindsay Lohan was back during one of her earlier mid 2000s hosting gigs just when she started making tabloid covers for her partying, the opening monologue sketch has her being visited by a future version of herself that ruined her career through bad movie choices (the prediction was Mean Girls 2, a bunch of Lifetime movies and Skinemax so all things considered they weren't that far off) and partying too hard. Lindsay assuming this was a far off version of herself asks how things are 30 years in the future, future version says she doesn't know, she's only from 2007. So really by 2012 they should've known better.

With new information that has come to light about Paris Hilton and Justin Bieber during the times when they hosted -- Paris' sexual abuse at that boarding school; the unrealistic pressures and expectations Bieber experienced at a young age -- it may be worth considering their respective mental states. Never heard of Louise Lasser before this, but that just sounded all kinds of sad.
