First and foremost, I feel far more sympathy for people who have never experienced financial stability than those who’ve had it - and then some - and lost it all. However, for me the story of Gary Coleman is the most tragic. He got screwed by his own parents, endured a lifetime of bullying due to his small stature, and ended up working as a security guard at the backlot of the studio where his childhood stardom began. I felt genuine sadness when I learned of his untimely death. TLC comes a close second.

Amanda Bines a few weeks back was found a walking naked in the middle of the night in downtown la. When approached by fans the only thing she could say was “I’m just coming down from a psychotic break”. She did check herself in to a hospital. That girl has been so haunted by her mental health it’s hard to not feel bad for her.

Her family seems to be mostly crap too after reading about that conservator hearings and stuff. It was just about them getting paid and still begs so many questions on who’s there for her. The way this channel and others talk about drugs as “substance abuse disorder” and call in “sustained substance use” rather than addiction or drug abuse makes it sound like these people never had a choice to start using, and makes them into powerless victims of a “disease.” It’s the only “disease” where you get to make the conscious choice to never have. I grew up around drugs and thought it was normal. But I also watched relatives destroy lives for it and consciously chose to not start. I watched relatives of mine say they couldn’t help themselves and that it was a “disease,” and I got to deal with being called a shitty person when I reached the limit of help I was willing to offer since I was “abandoning” people who were “sick” and “couldn’t help themselves because they have a disease.” They made the CHOICE to start, and I’ the bad one for it. They’re disempowered to do anything since they’ve been told for years now that it’s not their fault as their kids suffer until choosing to follow in their footsteps. I’ve gone no-contact, even with my mother, and will deal with being called a bad person and a bad daughter. I don’t allow that shit into my life, even if that means kicking out people that this channel sees as poor victims who should have my support. If they don’t want to get help, then I don’t care what happens to them, and I don’t care where they end up, and they should’t get financial support that they’ll blow up their noses.

But once the addiction is there, it truly becomes a disease in the sense that you really don't feel like you have a choice anymore but to keep taking it. Of course that's not true but that's what it does to you and that's how it feels. I'm speaking from experience with substance addiction but the kicker is, like you said, whether or not people WANT to be helped, or even recognize that they have a problem. The last part is the trickiest because people are never more angry than when confronted with uncomfortable truths about themselves.

You may feel like you don’t have a choice anymore, but that doesn’t change the fact that there was a time when you didn’t use something, and then made the choice to. Lessons to learn from all these: * Finish High School * Trust Financial Advisors to a point. They are there to advice, not manage your money. The final decision should be up to you. * Learn to say NO. * Know when to back out of a Legal fight. Sometimes it’s not meant to be. * Your Health is important. Take care of yourself properly (for a long life & healthy bank account) * Always read your contracts; even if it’s super long and boring. Know what you are getting into.

Dana Plato was commoditized her entire life. She was an accomplished figure skater until her showbiz mother forced her to be an actress. She was a childhood victim of SA. When she was a teenager and became pregnant it was through a relationship with an older guy who retrospect preyed on her. Even her suicide was after being ridiculed on the Stern show. Her story is remarkably similar to Amanda Peterson, the actress from "Can't Buy Me Love."

Reynolds was somewhat a victim of "golden touch syndrome", where Hollywood producers thought that he had the golden touch and that just casting him in a movie would guarantee success. They didn't understand that the underlying movie has to be solid, or it doesn't matter how popular the star is. Which goes along with what I've said for years: Studio executives are incapable of judging quality. To them, every movie, no matter how badly written or made, is exactly the same quality to them, and they have absolutely no idea why one movie is a hit and another one bombs.

Amanda has Bipolar Disorder, and without someone to really care (Her parents only spent her money and ignored her mental heath) things like that happens. As someone who lives with bipolar disorder, I wouldn't be here, alive, without the suport I have from my family, and the worst part is that almost no one is talking about this issue, people don't know hot to react, or what to do, when they see someone in a maniac episode. The only one I have empathy for is Gary Coleman. His parents squandered his fortune, he was just a child. He didn’t act gluttonous with his money. Poor thing worked his childhood and young adulthood away just to have adoptive parents, financial team, agents and lawyers who did not protect his future and robbed him blind. He already had huge medical bills to cover most of his life due to dialysis and a couple failed transplants. It was so sad when he passed at such a young age. At least he’s at peace now, no one else can hurt or let him down.

The phrase “substance use disorder” is meant to take all responsibility off of a person when the reality is that no one becomes an addict without a moment where they’d never tied drugs, then make the decision to do it. Don’t make that decision, and you can’t become an addict. Instead, you’re taking it off of the addict, and worse, this makes it so that affected people in an addict’s life are seen as heartless for “abandoning” a “sick” person. As someone who has had to go entirely no-contact with addicts who openly took the mindset that it’s a “disease,” and so it’s not their fault, and as someone who was nearly killed for it, you’re not helping matters by trying to make addicts feel better. You’re disempoering them by making it something that happened to them, not something they originally had a choice about and are still on te hook for.

Eh, there's a give and take to it. My mother had a 162 IQ and drank herself to death in a multi-million $ estate in Los Feliz. When my ex and I split up the way I dealt with missing her continuously was to drink heavily. She and I were extremely close and not having her around was like having my arm FN sawed off. I made the choice but you can also argue this choice was influenced by what I was around constantly as a kid. My sister never touched a drop and went to Harvard (seriously). Maybe she's the better person. Maybe she had better opportunities because she's certainly smarter than me. I believe substance abuse is similar to falling in love: timing is part of it, convenience, background, etc. It's probably a combination, not all one thing or another. Don't be quick to condemn.

I'm sure there are going to be a lot of people who disagree with me, but I do understand how many of these stories (and many others like them) happen. I feel that living paycheck to paycheck before suddenly swimming in wealth only increases the chances of something like this happening. Also, for those who don't lose their money to decisions with drugs and/or alcohol, using the money for "retail therapy" can quickly get as out of control as any other addiction... especially drugs or alcohol. The time to start learning how to live with a surplus of money, assuming you didn't have a chance to learn growing up, is the first moment that you realize you are going to have expendable income... not when you realize months, or years, into the problem. While it isn't unheard of regaining control of your financial situation after digging a deep hole, it is very difficult and requires asking multiples of people for help... and admitting to yourself, before it is to late, that you need help.

People have to learn that no matter if they're swimming in wealth now, there is no guarantee that that will continue into the future. In fact, chances are that it won't. So if you have a lot of money now, put it away for the future! People have to learn that you can also out spend any amount that you earn. A million dollars, for example, sounds like a lot of money, but it really isn't that much if you're buying houses and things of that nature.

Reynolds was a great guy but here's the truth. He ran off Sally Field. That's like whiffing at being Gwen Stefani's bf. You can be a decent, charismatic guy and at the same make poisonous decisions people of substance can't look past. This why you shouldn't screw them over. In the last 15 years of his life Reynolds repeatedly discussed in interviews how he messed up with Sally. His last years would have been a million times better if he hadn't done this, which is a lesson for everyone. If you find a great girl then ***DON'T F IT UP*** Yes I have done this too.

I'm kind of horrified that Burt Reynolds had to sell his Golden Globe from Boogie Nights, and is Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit. Thank goodness for Reynold's neighbor. Jack Nicholson did a similar thing for a friend of his. He bought him back the mansion he had to sell. Although, in that case he didn't charge him anything, he just bought him the house back.

That annoyed me too. I guess “drug abuse” doesn’t sound sad and heart-warming enough. But if you make every person that makes a bad DECISION feel like it was a “disorder,” over which they had NO control, you’re not only justifying their mistakes as acceptable and not within their control, but also condemning others to repeat the process because they believe they have no control over it at all.

Amanda Bynes isn't even the same person anymore. Who she was years ago is what she thought her parents and Hollywood expected of her. What you see in movies or media in general is fantasy, not reality. People really need to understand that. The poor girl is now lost and gone because she never had a chance to become her own person. 😔 Just pray for her.

True…but at least he DID buy another house (much less lavish, and less affluent area). I have never met him personally, (but a couple of people I know who knew him said he became quite rooted in his new hometown of Tracy, California. In addition, his kids went to school there, and he became a big advocate and supporter of the schools in his area and a much valued community member of his area in south Tracy, CA.

The way the contracts were written TLC were "underwriting" the next unproven album with their own money. You don't do that in entertainment, if at all possible. Cyndi Lauper did the same thing. Contracts are written by some of tghe most shyster lawyers in ANY business (in NY and Miami). Stick a 20 year old "girl" in the mix and who wins????!

Where is the late Tom Sizemore on this list? His downfall was in the 2000s after his dependent on drugs and his legal troubles with domestic violence made him homeless during that decade. He did make a comeback in 2017s Twin Peaks Reboot and his first posthumous released film Breakout has garnered some critical acclaim.
