@@lesterbrandt3203 It's an extremely well made movie, with a great script and endearing characters. Even though the core characters are fictitious, the events are very accurately portrayed. Unlike We Were Soldiers, Hamburger Hill has no sentimental gush. It merely mentions what being back home is like. The rest of the film focuses strictly on the battle itself, and what the characters have to go through. A very, very, good movie to say the least!

Thank you for putting Stalingrad (1993) on this list, that movie is so underrated and so brilliant. Thank you for ranking Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down as high as you did. Both of my favourite war movies ever! I think you all are misinterpritating the rest of Saving Private Ryan, it is about a squad that has to resuce a soldier that lost all of his siblings during World War 2, and I cannot disagree more that it's just about the "Normandy Landings" you either just haven't watched the entire movie or were too dumb to even understand the enormous danger that the eight men sent out to find "Private Ryan" they are put in. It is phenomally acted, written, directed and filmed so masterfully.

They're wrong about Flags Of Our Fathers. The flag raising wasn't "staged" for publicity like she and many others claim. A flag was raised earlier, but it was quite small and hard to see on top of the mountain. So commanders asked that it be swapped for a larger flag that would be more visible from the beaches. That's all there was to it. The metal pipe it was attached to was quite heavy, so some soldiers who were there helped to stand it up. Yes a photographer was sent up to get pictures of it, but photographers took MANY photos during those days. Doesn't mean everything was staged by soldiers simply "acting" for the camera. It was a real event.
@tedr452617 күн бұрын
Sounds like it was staged,and you know what , who cares , great photo
@MrLolx2u17 күн бұрын
It was staged. The flag was actually good enough to mark that the US had taken the ridge, the 1st of many during the battle and at that point, the US had already lost over 6,000 men be it wounded or actually dead just to claim that one ridge. However, when the officer corp went and check the flag the very next day when the 1st was planted, they were seriously not happy with it and with the lives lost, they wanted to showboat and prove a bigger point thus they got more men, a bigger flag to go up there and plant it which became iconic as that was the moment that the photographer took pictures of thus only those that rose the 2nd flag got named as heroes whereas the ones that planted the smaller flags got forgotten as nothing and many would be sent back into the very same battle and would die because of it. The film is just broadcasting how bureaucratic bullshit can ruin soldiers lives and just how much generals actually care about infantry's lives that as long as they get their achievements, loss of lives isn't their concern. That's the whole point of "Flags of Our Fathers" and yes, the 2nd flag raising was definitely staged af by the commanders.
@jeremey142316 күн бұрын
@@MrLolx2u It was not staged. The first flag was raised when the Marines got to the top of the mountain and it was seen all over the island and by the ships off the coast. The Secretary of the Navy, who was there, requested the flag for himself. When word reached the officers on the ground that he wanted it, they ordered Gagnon to take another flag up and replace it, bringing the first flag back for the unit. They told Gagnon to find a bigger flag. When Gagnon reached the top he told Sgt. Strank what he was there for and Strank and his men raised the new flag while the other was taken down. Rosenthal almost missed the photo and was not even looking through the viewfinder when he took it. He did not think it was going to turn out. He then took several photos of the Marines posing in groups. There was another photo of the first flag raising taken by Louis Lowery (see at the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:First_Iwo_Jima_Flag_Raising.jpg) that was staged. The famous photo was not a picture of the important event on the battlefield. it was just a photo of some guys changing out the flags, but it was not staged. The people involved forgot all about the second flag raising and the photo. But when the film arrived back in the US for processing, the man developing it saw the potential and cropped it (making it more dramatic) then released it to the press. It wound up on the front page of every newspaper in the country. Incidentally, if you ever want to see both flags, they display them in the Marine Corps museum at Quantico Virginia. The larger flag is displayed all year, while the smaller is only displayed in March. (The battle ended in March.)

My grandpa, who raised me, saw both flag raisings from a troops transport ship off the beach of Iwo. He had been going back and forth to the beach to gather Marine casualties and bring them back to his boat, which, because of the enormous number of Marine casualties, was turned into a makeshift hospital ship. Grandpa used to tell me stories about it and Okinawa where he went next in the USS Barrow, which is why I enlisted in the Marine Corps infantry after high school. I wanted to see if I had what it took to be a Marine. I did become a Marine, and did well in the Corps, but those men were a special breed of tough that I wouldn't dare try to compare myself to.

#18 After I saw this one, it became my new favorite war movie, but not just because it's a World War 2 movie. It's because of who it's based on. With the late Desmond Doss surviving all of that without a single weapon, or firing a shot, he definitely had a guardian angel on his shoulders.

@@jarrettowens6073 You doubt anyone could be a believer in God more than him? That is a claim that you can't even begin to back up, and you know it. For one thing, the bible justifies killing for one reason or another, thru the entire book. So your reasoning is dubious at best. This is why I always thought Desmond Doss's position was kind of ridiculous. He had a problem with killing? Yet worshiped a religion that had once had zero problems murdering people. Listen, I think Doss is an absolute hero for doing what he did, in saving all those wounded soldiers. He deserves all the credit in the world for doing what he did. But his beliefs in his religion were idiotic.

When I was at Wesley College's St Kilda Road Campus we students were told to sit down and were showed the deeply emotional but brilliant movie 'Gallipoli'. As we sat there totally immersed in the film I cannot speak for all my fellow students but certainly the overwhelming majority - we were deeply emotionally, and as young teenage Australians who most were deeply patriotically nationalistic - we all shared a deep sense of horror, extreme proudness in our most precious generation as a very young new country - and deep anger towards the sheer bastardry and incompetence of the British. Yes, my ancestors came from the UK - however as a fierce republican my hatred of the British establishment was born. Now I know this'll trigger the 'more British than the British forlock tugging' monarchists out there but I don't give a FF. The movie was extremely well filmed and acted - helping to propel the New York born, but NIDA Australian raised/trained career of one Mel Gibson. 'Gallipoli' remains one of our most precious national films - part fact, part fiction. As does the charge at Beersheba in the telemovie "ANZACs". That cavalry charge, the cinematography and selection of music remains, along with 'Gallipoli' - national treasures.

Two of the movies are based on the non-fiction books by Cornelius Ryan. They did not make a movie on his third book, "The Last battle".

World at War is by far the most accurate and unbiased documentary, Saving Private Ryan has some truly realistic scenes especially in the beginning, but like most movies it's full of bias towards one side of the war. Band of Brothers is in the same predicament, has a lot going for it but sadly is let down by twisted facts to show one side in a more favorable light. I'll give you one example in Band of Brothers, allthough there are many, at the end Major Richard Dick Winters tells the colonel that he may keep his sidearm as a sign of respect, in reality this is not what happened, but it would look bad if he kept the sidearm which i imagine is exactly what he did, regardless, he definitely did not tell him to keep his sidearm. Once you pull the series apart you come to realize that it is filled of little twisted inaccuracies such as this, for entertainment purposes, it is still a great achievement.

Hamburger Hill is the most accurate movie when it comes to the Vietnam war period. More than Platoon. It uses the correct lingo and the actors did a phenomenal job. It's the one movie most nam vets praise for being accurate.
