There was a scandal in Australian cricket called Sandpaper gate when the Australian cricket team was touring South Africa in 2018, during the third test one of the Australian bowlers Cameron Bancroft was seen on television and the ground jumbotrons rubbing a small piece of sandpaper on the ball. 5 days later following investigation by cricket Australia Bancroft admitted to rubbing sandpaper on the ball also the Australian team captain Steve Smith & vice-captain David Warner were also involved in the incident. Both Smith & Warner were banned from international & domestic cricket for a year, they were also stripped from their captaincy & Bancroft was banned for 9 months. Also the head coach of cricket Australia Darren Lehmann while not involved decided to step down following the scandal.

What people tend to forget about the Astros is it not only affected them but also the Red Sox , Yankees , mets. The Red Sox were fined. Lost a draft pick and Alex Cora ( the former bench coach of the Astros ) was fired and suspended for a year. The Yankees I believe were just fined and lost a pick. The Mets lost their manager in 2020 who was Carlos Beltran a player on that Astros team who at that point was beginning his career as a manager

The thing that gets lost in the whole Astros scandal is that Alex Cora was the mastermind behind it all..and won the 2018 WS with the Red Sox. None of those Red Sox players got punished either. Cora and Hinch both get suspended, but are both working as soon as their suspensions are over. I think MLB knows that this was a much bigger problem and couldn’t punish anyone without torpedoing the whole league.

Cheating not only hurts the opponents that should have won, but their friends and family as well. I was friends with Olympic High Jumper Chante Lowe in high school. In Beijing she got 6th place. Fast forward 8 years later, it is found that 3rd, 4th, and 5th place all tested for banned substances so the bronze is hers. Although she gets the medal she didn’t get to stand in the podium. I didn’t get to see my friend on the podium or brag that my friend was there. To top it off, I had to go tell my brother 8 years later that he technically lost our bet and now he owes me.

NBA ref Eric Lewis could almost made this list. At the end of the 2023 season, people started realizing the Celtics were always given favorable calls in games that Lewis was in. It got egregious at the end of the season, and people started digging into his history and social media and potentiall found burner accounts. When the NBA announced an investigation, Lewis announced his retirement. The NBA dropped the investigation soon after because he quit, but had they continued could have uncovered more ref corruption and rigging.

Yes, the Melbourne Storm NRL team was busted for salary cap breaches 2006-2010. In that time, they won the premiership under false pretences in 2007 and 2008. These two "premierships" were stripped (but not re-allocated to the runners up) and the club was given a slap on the wrist by the NRL's governing body, given the gravity of the offences.

The slap on the wrist was because the NRL needed the Melbourne Storm to be successful. That is why they got away with taking out players, manipulating the referees, held no one accountable for the salary cap breaches and were given the premiership the year after their "ban". Remember the peptides scandal involving the sharks? That guy who they blamed was working with the storm at the same time, but nothing was said. The storm ruined rugby league

I don’t think “Spygate” deserves to be in the top 20. It was really a misunderstanding on he part of the Patriots. The rules said that you were allowed to record teams DURING GAMES from an authorized location on the sideline. The assistant was on the opponent’s sideline instead of their own and was in an unauthorized spot in the sideline to record. It’s really not all that severe as it was made to seem. Also what seems to get glossed over was that the Jets did the same exact thing to the Patriots the year before the only difference is that they weren’t caught. Steelers did it to in the 90s and so did the 49ers. I’m not defending it but they were far from the only ones and were the first ones either so I don’t think it deserves to be top 20. It only got the attention it did because of the people involved and their successes.

The Australian captain Greg Chappell instructed his younger brother Trevor to bowl the last ball of the match underarm. The underarm ball angered Australian TV network Channel 9’s sportscaster Richie Benaud himself a former captain who said after the match. It was “disgraceful and one of the worst things I have ever seen done on a cricket field”
