HmatMotu The orc army was more like 15 to 20,000 orcs. I exagerated there is no way Mordor sent 60,000 orcs. After the battle Morder only had 10,000 orcs still inside Mordor. 6,000 would not make a dent in 60,000.

Patrick Fry My friend, the movies are a bit away from the books, but either way there were at least 100Gs of orcs before the walls of MinasTirith, besides in the books the host was described as the largest ever to be issued from Morgul but still it wasn't the greatest in Mordor, the movie tell that there where still 10000 orc in Mordor but it's just the way P.J. see it fit in the movie.

I love Aragorn's speech, believe me, but Theoden's just pierces something in you and you can't help but tear up a little. In the extended edition even more, because Gondor is on the ropes, and Jackson did a good enough job in taking away the viewer's attention off the fact that Rohan was coming by giving us more subplots within the city, as well as focusing on Denethor's defeatism... But the moment that Gandalf, the wizard who'd come back from death, who always had an answer, was suddenly brought low by the Witch King, that's when it hit you, "Gondor may not survive this." And the only reason it hits you, is once again for what I stated before then, about Jackson doing a good job in taking our attention away from Rohan, regardless of the fact that we KNEW they were coming, and had had visual confirmation. But yeah, Gandalf is brought low, literally and symbolically. You can see real fear in his eyes when the Witch King said, “Do you not know death when you see it, old man? You have failed. The world of men will fall...” And then we hear the horns... And Theoden gives the best speech in the entire movie. That scene is honestly the best thing i've ever had the pleasure of witnessing, and no movie in the last 13 years has ever come close to having something as amazing as the Ride of the Rohirrim.

Aragorn's speech honestly did not seem very good to me. He was basically like, we will all die and scatter to ruin, but not today.... Its time to fight! If I were the soldiers, I would be like "well that don't make me feel very motivated...." Not to mention, the men didn't even feel the energy, because they just sat their silently like, "yup... we're screwed".
@NigelIncubatorJones
@NigelIncubatorJones Жыл бұрын
@@coyote4961 Agreed. His speech was not very good. You can tell it was the filmmakers' words, not Tolkien's. Theoden's speech came from Tolkien, and it sounds so good because Tolkien was an expert in that idiom.
@eeyun5279
@eeyun5279 10 ай бұрын
@@coyote4961I disagree, Aragorns speech wasn’t about defeatism, it was about how to live honorably as a man even in the face of death. They were screwed, hopelessly outnumbered. Doomed to die as all men are. But living honorably even in the face of mortality. Doing the right thing even if it doesn’t get you anywhere. The age of men WILL fall, today, or tomorrow, or in a thousand years.. but we will not break regardless, even in the face of death. And then at the end he whispers “for Frodo” because even more so than lofty ideals he will go to the grave defending his loved ones, gladly even. It’s a good boiling down of what separates men from orcs/Sauron. They will do whatever they need to advance themselves, they want to live forever, they act on wants and desires not morals. But a man can and will die for others. It also ties back to the conversation at helms deep. When Theodin had basically given up “what can men do against such reckless hate”. Aragorn replies “ride out with me” ie “we die willfully, living the way we should” And Theodin replies “for death or glory” because he’s not quite there yet, he’s still trapped in fear, it’s something Sauron would say “I’m doomed so I might as well grab all the glory I can” But Aragorn replies “for Rohan, for your people” and Theodin gets it.
@coyote4961
@coyote4961 10 ай бұрын
@@eeyun5279 I didn't say that his speech was about defeatism, but it sure can come off as such by the words he's chosen... How you say something is honestly more important then what it means. His words didn't really bring inspiration. Take Aragons speech and compare it to Theoden's. Its like night and day. Theoden's speech came off so much more inspirational even as bleak as he put it. Hope for the future... that's what makes a good battle speech, because people need to be reminded that what they do, even if it costs their lives, will make a difference. And THAT is why William Wallace BY FAR has the best speech here. "run, and you will live... but all those days dying in your beds looking back at this day, would you think just one... just one chance to come back here and tell your enemies, 'you may take our lives... but you will never take our freedom." THAT is the perfect way to end a battle speech when you know you may be go to certain doom. Sharing a future with your men that the future may be better all because YOU made that choice to fight for it.

Fair enough, but as a book reader it seemed really apparently the difference in the quality of the prose, comparing Theoden's speech, originally penned by Tolkien, to Aragorn's, which was added in by Fran Boyens and Phillipa Walsh. Aragorn's speech just seemed a lot more 'modern' and a lot less poetic, so it stuck out a bit compared to most of the speech in the movie and in the original text.

Where's Lord Theoden speech 'Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death! Death! Death! Forth Eorlingas!'

You're in the front line of the King's Company, facing down more orcs than you've ever seen while Gondor burns. You've probably got a family back home that you will likely never see again. Your mount keeps bucking beneath you and shifting, its anxious cries twisting with those around you. You can't distinguish friends amidst the mass of Riders surrounding you. Then suddenly, Theoden's sword hits your spear as he rides down the line and you're snapping back to attention. You may not make it back to your family, but this is for them either way. If Gondor is lost, then they'll be next. You face almost certain death and the horns blare in your ear. Then you move. Slow at first before you can get into a gallop. Your King is beside you, and the orcs are coming closer and closer, and still you know Death is on your side. Then you ride, you ride for ruin, and the world's ending.

As a Englishman, St Crispin's is just a master piece. "From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day." It's just epic, made the more so that its about the battle of Agincourt, one of the most famous battles in History.

+bread_n_butter I agree, but they picked the wrong Henry V speech imo... Once more unto the breach is a much more battle stirring speech. "The game's afoot; follow your spirit, and upon this charge, cry god for Harry! England! and St GEORGE!!!!!!!!!!" .... though I guess it's content is quite elitist/nationalist, it is definitely the ultimate battle speech. ... ... Some of the others were good speeches, but as a BATTLE speech, Theoden's speech is better than Aragorn's too, especially since Aragorn's does not lead into a battle cry, unlike theoden, Henry and William Wallace.

The fact is, evil exists in this world., and the men who would do evil are not in the least deterred by fine stirring speeches. They are not moved by words (except perhaps moved to derision). They only respond to force. Anyone who doesn't accept that is doomed to live their life as a slave if evil prevails. It wasn't words that stopped Hitler or the Jap and Italian fascists from their murderous tyranny. It was the allied peoples of the world who ended the Axis will and ability to continue their obscene acts thru force and violence. This human condition continues today (it won't be words that defeat radical Islamist fascism, or that little Orc in North Korea). Those who hold otherwise are free to spout their nonsense only because they are afforded the luxury to speak that nonsense through the protection of better men then they. They are protected from their own foolishness by those who know the truth and are not afraid to risk their own lives and limbs in protection of liberty - by violence when necessary.
