Gerards will go down in history as being instrumental to two League title wins but never winning the league himself.

To add a bit more info to the Steve Smith own goal at 6:30: the Oilers and the Flames are provincial rivals (known as 'the Battle of Alberta'). The rivalry is well known in hockey and Canadian football, but also has some political undertones. Edmonton tends to be a more liberal city by Alberta standards whereas Calgary tends to be more conservative. The 1980's was the height of this rivalry as both teams were among the league's best. The Oilers had won the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 85, so this own goal interrupted a dynasty (the Oilers ended up winning the Cup in 87, 88, and 90). The Flames went on to lose in the Cup Final in 86 but won the Cup in 89.

Nick Van Berkel That was the best set of players for both teams! I miss when you could buy nosebleeder seats for $6.25..... my best friend and I would skip first period of class and wait in line to buy tickets. I know most probably aren't golf fans, but Van De Velde's collapse was so painful to watch, because unlike all the other events on this list, it didn't occur in a split second. While most of these errors are catastrophic, they occur because of a split second horrible decision. Van De Velde's incident went on for nearly 30 minutes (the video is on youtube), making constant bad decision after bad decision. At some points his blunders even get lucky breaks, and yet he still continues to collapse. It was to the point where fans, announcers, even his own caddie were pleading with him. I'll never forget that.

Seahawks fan believe throwing the ball was the biggest mistake. Can’t believe it wasn’t on the list.
@aspenrebel6 жыл бұрын
Not really a mistake. It was coaches call, a decision, and generally a safe play to call, with high probability of success. Seahawk guy was just slow on the ball, didn't make an effort, and Malcom Butler read it all the way, and cut in to make interception. He will have that for the rest of his life. Don't understand why Belichick wouldn't let him play in Super Bowl vs Eagles (2017 Season). He may have made the difference for Pats to win. But Butler was pissed, and now his gone from Patriots.
@dantheman57456 жыл бұрын
Spot on about Butler making the play vs Seattle, aspenrebel. There is an excellent breakdown online somewhere (can't remember at the moment) that explained EXACTLY why Belichick opted to leave Butler on the bench vs Philly. It made perfect sense, as Butler was the less-physical choice at CB for Belichick, and the poison that the Patriots picked was to make Foles throw to beat them. It showed how Butler got manhandled vs Jacksonville (a game the Patriots woulda/coulda/shoulda lost if the refs allowed the Jax DB to return the fumble for a TD, as he was never touched down) and that Philly would've gone after Butler the same way. EXCELLENT explanation if you can find it. Definitely worth your time. Basically, it was exactly what Belichick said it was. He went with the other CB because he felt it gave New England the best chance to win. Belichick wasn't lying or being coy. He was stating his reason very plainly and accurately. And it actually made perfect sense, once you understood the options Belichick had in view of what transpired in the Jacksonville game.

When Joyce called the runner safe, Galarraga gave a “you’ve got to be kidding” look. Most other pitchers would have thrown a tantrum. His grace, good sportsmanship (and the usually superb Joyce’s tearful realization of his blown call) made them both winners in my book. I can still see Miggie Cabrerra clutching his head in disbelief. It will always be the most vivid perfect game in my eyes.

If you want to go back as far as 1929, U. of California football player Roy Riegels picked up a Georgia Tech fumble and ran about 60 yards the wrong way in the Rose Bowl, leading to Georgia Tech scoring a touchdown and winning the game 8-7. In 1964, when the Vikings' Jim Marshall made his wrong-way run, Riegels sent him a telegram which said: "Welcome to the club!"

I think who atleast deserves an honorable mention is Oliver Kahn in the World Cup Final in 2002. He was the reason for why an average german national team with a few standout players reached the world cup final against Brazil, only for fumbling a straight up shot from Rivaldo that gave Ronaldo the chance for the 1-0. He still got the award for best player, but losing the world cup in that fashion is very frustrating.

Yeah, that Super Bowl pass Carroll called when they had the ball with 2nd down on the 2 yard line and Marshawn Lynch had been a beast all game should've been near the top of not number one on this dubious list.

I have a quote from a retired MLB umpire who agrees that Galarraga did bobble the ball. Galarraga was not situated on the base, he was moving and not in control of his body, so he has to have the ball secured in his glove, not just in his glove.
@joevignolor4u9496 жыл бұрын
My favorite one was Trot Nixon playing right field for the Red Sox in Fenway Park. He caught a fly ball for the second out and then gave the ball to a fan. As he turned to run back to the dugout, thinking it was three outs, he noticed the opposing runners going around the bases. By the time he got the ball back from the fan and threw it in several of them had scored.
@KnickKnack076 жыл бұрын
Retrieving it meant nothing. Once it went into the stands, it was out of play and the runners advance one extra base in addition to the one they were heading to. The most that scored on the play that shouldn't have was 1. Even if the bases were loaded, the runner on third would have scored anyway. The runner on second would have been headed to third and therefore been awarded home. But the runner on first would have only been going to second, and would have had to stop at 3rd. And that is IF they were running to the next base. If they were still running back to their previous bases (thinking he was going to throw it in) they would have been only awarded on base from where they started the play.

I'll make you a better list below. The biggest problem with this list is that the relative importance of the mistake. For example, Desean Jackson throwing the football in celebration is bad... but the Eagles still had the ball at the 1 yard line and scored a 1 yard rushing touchdown from Brian Westbrook. Even Jim Marshall's wrong way run against the 49ers was a game in the regular season. A list of "Most Shocking Mistakes" should be on important stages. My personal list: 10. J.R. Smith's Game 1 mistake (2018 NBA Finals) 9. Gareth Southgate's penalty miss for England against Germany (Euro 1996) 8. The ball going through Bill Buckner's legs in the 1986 World Series Game 6 7. Steven Gerrard's slip against Chelsea (2014 Premier League) 6. Seattle Seahawks interception at the goal line in Super Bowl XLIX 5. Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis' showboating which caused her to lose the Gold Medal in 2006 4. Steve Smith putting the puck in his own net against Calgary in the 1986 Stanley Cup Playoffs 3. Fred Merkle's baserunning mistake in the 1908 National League season which led to a game replay 2. Jean Van De Velde's triple Bogey in 1999 Open Championship 1. Roberto Baggio's penalty miss for Italy against Brazil (1994 World Cup)

Buckner was not only run out of Boston because of that play in the 1986 World Series, it effectively ended his pro career. That said, Red Sox fans probably became more forgiving after they won the 2004 Series.

Was Desean Jackson’s mistake really worse than the cowboys mistake of not picking the ball up and running it back
@Gabelogan20156 жыл бұрын
You taking about in that same game? Where a Cowboy player did pick it up but officials already blew the play dead thinking it was a touchdown.
@aspenrebel6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, ball was still LIVE as best I could see. Player could have gone back and tried to pick it up again, and tried to run it in for a TD again. What did they say, by Rule it was placed on the 1 yard line? Maybe refs blew the whistle though. What game was it, when something similar happened, and the refs DID NOT blow the whistle. Ball still LIVE. I think someone finally picked it up and ran it back the other way for a TD. I remember seeing the ref just standing there, looking at the ball, did not blow the whistle.
@Gabelogan20156 жыл бұрын
I remember a college game I think it was Stanford vs Oregon and a Oregon duck player drop the ball on the 1 yard and celebrated like he scored a TD and you see a line Judge squat and look at the ball and didn't give no TD signal and a Stanford player notice picked it up and ran the other way for a TD.

One thing the narrator of the film missed: With the De Sean Jackson miscue, it was also a fuck-up on the cowboys' part as well. When Jackson let go of the football, that was technically considered a fumble, and one of the two cowboys' defenders nearby could have easily recovered the ball making it first and ten for them at their own one yard line; rather than the resulting first & goal for the eagles - being that everybody just ignored the ball afterwards thinking that it was a touchdown.

I was a little kid at the time (in the late 1970s) but I was at the Willowbrook Shopping Center in Wayne NJ and the Giants football game was on the TV and I saw the play where their quarterback Joe Pisarcik fumbled the handoff (all he had to do was take a knee and the game would have been over and the Giants would have won), it also probably cost Pisarcik his job bc I think that's why the Giants drafted Phil Simms who of course took the Giants to Super Bowl a few years later.

Here's one: NHL referee Kerry Fraser and his two linesmen completely "miss" an obvious high sticking infraction by Wayne Gretzky on Doug Gilmour in the overtime of game 6 of the 1993 Stanley Cup conference final between the Los Angeles Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. If the major penalty had been correctly called, Gretzky would have been booted from the game, as his high stick had cut Gilmour's chin. As Toronto was already up 3-2 in the series at the time, a five-minute man advantage with the sport's greatest star out of the game could easily have enabled the Leafs to win that match and, thus, the series and go on to the team's first finals appearance in 26 mostly painful years. The opponent would have been Montreal, and the Leafs' rivalry with the Canadiens just happens to be hockey's greatest and longest-standing. In short, there was a hell of a lot riding on the game, the overtime and whether this penalty would be called, both for the players and Toronto's long-suffering, rabid fans. Gretzky received no penalty and ended up scoring the overtime-winning goal in that game. He also scored a hat trick to help L.A. win game 7 and the Leafs have still yet to make the finals since. Even though it's now over 25 years since this happened, generations of fans in the hockey-mad city of Toronto still dwell on this non-call and its immediate and long-term effects. In the aftermath, Fraser admitted to missing the call. For more information, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKS0eZSkpZqUpdE. Haters keep your crap to yourself. I don't care if you don't agree with this one, if you dislike hockey or if you think this list was too pro-North American. If you don't like it, make your own video or contribute something more than a complaint riddled with spelling errors.
@rickpapineau59395 жыл бұрын
It's time to let it go. Why do I say that? Because there are more recent examples that cost other cities actual Stanley Cup wins. For example, the Flames in 2004 (I'm an Oilers fan, btw). Not only did Gelinas score a goal that was called back (because the officials "couldn't see" that it was clearly across the line), but St Louis also tripped Iginla - in the same game - just prior to scoring the official winner. Two blown calls against the Flames that 100% cost them the Cup as the Flames were up 3 games to 2 at the time. All the Fraser miss cost was a possible series win.

One of my personal favourites was Utah vs. Oregon (College Football-America). Utah runs 79-yard for a touchdown...or he would, except for his early celebration causing him to drop the ball just before the goal line. Absolutely nobody-not even the cameramen or commentators even noticed the ball was still in play except for the official on the side and a few Oregon players. After a brief fight over the ball with the one Utah player who figured out what was going on, the ball was recovered again and a giant mass of dudes covered the Oregon player's 99-yard run in the opposite direction. While this kind of thing has happened before, this is by far one of the funniest examples of it.

Actually, one really shocking mistake in sports was in the Grand National Steeplechase horse race back in the early 1950's. Horse had a huge lead, was about to win, then just before the finish line, the horse suddenly, for no explicable reason, did a belly flop of the turf. Dove out.... both front legs forward, both rear legs back, then SPLAT!! . Well short of the finish line. I'm not sure, but it may have been the Queen Mom's horse too. Clip of it here on YT. No one knows what the hell the horse was thinking.
