Metallica is doing ok, but Liz Phair' Why Can't I? C'mon Man!
@ymeynot04053 ай бұрын
@@ecwdude17 I laugh at their list, LIz Phair especially. That is the only song of Liz Phair that I can remember as a child of the 1990's lilith fair era. They might call it a failure, but I would hazzard a guess that it is her most famous song that gave her the widest name recognition. Edit: Jewel is another one on this list they got wrong. She made a great parody of the late 90's/2000's commercialism towards over produced music the eventually led to stars like Kesha. Nothing Jewel could have done at that point would have saved her career because the age of Lilith Fair was over. Just like disco died, hair bands died, the women rock era of the 90's was over. It wasn't a song. It was the changing of the times. Further proof that this list is crap... both #2 & #1 have nothing to do with the music. They pissed off people for things done outside of the music studio.

In all fairness to Liz Phair, she had just had a baby and needed higher income. While her previous work was brilliant, it wasn't commercial. AT ALL. Phair had the right to want to be paid well for her music. And "Why Can't I?" wasn't a bad song; in fact it was a solid pop song.
@gahan1012 ай бұрын
@@ebonyedwards-ellis8165 I understand, but that move was too quick. Going from an indie rock act to mainstream pop right after the 2nd album was a bad move. It got people confused about what kind of artist she really was. She didn't took the time to establish seriously herself before considering going mainstream. So maybe the audience thought she was just jumping in the bandwagon. Cos that's that's exactly what she did. But it wasn't any good for her. She even said later that the album wasn't her.

"Intuition" was meant to be a parody of young pop diva songs and videos, but a lot of fans didn't get the joke. As for "Why Can't I", Liz Phair was the darling of the alternative rock era of the 1990's, but by the time she released the song and her album the alt-rock scene had already transitioned out of grunge and post-grunge and on to nu-metal and pop punk, so she was just trying to keep up with the times. As for Billy Squier, there was nothing wrong with the song itself; it was the music video that sunk his career. And it wasn't even his idea to do the video like that himself.

Everyone focused on them while letting Farian off the hook. It's a shame frankly. Exactly, if "obnoxious anti-pop gatekeepers" means their fans that were the only ones that had made them, and were keeping them, successful. You don't know how to use "gatekeeper". You can't gatekeep something that's not yours. Folk fans did absolutely nothing to keep the artists out of pop. The artists abandoned folk fans for pop fans, but the pop fans didn't care for them. I don't even like the guy. But a white rapper winning an award over a black rapper is a "bridge too far?" 😂 And it sparked a discussion about "white artists in hip-hop spaces" where I assume they apparently don't belong for some idiotic, ridiculous reasons? I certainly don't buy these "statements" of white rappers being rewarded OVER black artists just for the mere fact that they are white? I didn't know that it was frowned upon for white guys to rap. They don't really dominate rap/hip-hop in the first place. So I don't buy the alleged preferential treatment white rappers get over black rappers. It's a shame what happened to Jewel, because I was more frustrated with Nelly Furtado, who hails from my home country, for doing virtually the same thing. Both women did kind of indy singer/songwriter type of music and produced some great songs, even if they didn't top any Billboard or international music charts. Nelly decided she wanted to do hip hop/R&B and I was so disappointed. She caved to what was popular at the time. I would have thought Jewel's lack of success switching to a different image and genre of music would have allowed her to go back to what she was good at and succeed. It didn't work, unfortunately. For Nelly, she succeeded, which meant the Canadian folk-inspired music was going to be a thing of the past and most people today remember her for her mid 2000s work.
