I love collecting old things. The history and amount of hands these items pass through over the years always amazes me. Mostly I dabble in coins that I find, my oldest coin dated from 1906. One of my most prized possessions is a piece of meteorite carbon dated at 4.6 billion years old. However recently I was delighted to find a bit of jewelry that I've now been wearing. It's an art deco ring with the Kimberly stamp inside the band. 10k gold. And a 4 carat emerald in it. The ring dates somewhere between 1890 and 1922. So it's at least 100 years old which is what I love about it the most.

The story of Orpin's painting is worth telling. Orpin was commosioned as an Official War artist in the Great War. As such anything he painted belonged to the War Office, now the MOD,. He also aquire a mistress the then 18 year old Yvone Aupic. He painted the picture of Yvonne, and calle dit the German Spy. Short of money he intended to seel the picture spicing the story that he had been ordered to attend the execution by the French of a female spy, and! Shock Horror! She had been.. naked.. when she was shot. The story got out and caused a major political row as the English High Command was incensed. Not that the French had shot a womsn, no problem there, but that the woman's last moments she had been exposed to the letcherous gaze of the Le Poilu (The Hairy Ones, French slang for private soldiers) . The French idignatly denied this had happned, major uproar, tarcing back to Orpin's lie. He was threatned with Court Marshall, and to be Cashiered (Sacked) as Orpin earned his living as a Society painter , he was a memeber of the Royal Accademy, this would have been a disater. Fortunatley he had the backing of Lord Beverbrook, the media mogul in UK at the times, as he owned all the newspapers. So a compromise was reached. Orpin wrote a grovelling apology, the picture was renamed the French Refugee, and is now part of theImperial War Musuem ccollection. It is belived the picture shown here wa spainted by Orpin as a thank you to Beaverbrook. BUT!! Theres more . Yvonne went on to marry Orpin's chaffeur a man known as William Grover Williams, though he had his own past, Willaims became a team driver with Buggatti during the 1920'-30' along with Robert Benoist, a French WW1 air ace. during the Second World war the three of them ran the Chestnut escape line. Williams and Benoist died in concentration camps. Yvonne went on to ne a judge at the Cruft's Dog Sho wand also breed balck and white terriers. The two dogs depicted on the Whisky label of Black and Whit Whisky are reputed to have bene her dogs. And finally, you will sometimes hear the story of the story of the 'Naked Female Spy' attributed to Mati Hari. This is provable not so a sshe was allowed to Catholic nuns to attend her before and at her exceqution. One wrote a report to the Pope detailing how Mata Hari was dressed. If you se any of Orpin's great War paintings that have female figures in, you will see one based on Yvonne.

When i saw him later, in a state of shock, he told me Graham had identfied it as a Zepplin prop, shot down over the Medway, and valued it at £20,000😁

I saw the "Angel of The North" in a mini series recently. I find it creepy. I dunno, I guess I'm weird.
@borderlineiq2 жыл бұрын
That seems perfectly natural considering it is faceless, which removes humanity and makes it therefore an image of the unknown, and potentially threatening, on a primal level. Add to that the fact that angels in the Hebrew Bible were terrifying creatures in every account, not the cherubs of romantic paintings, then it is appropriate.
@Luna.3.3.32 жыл бұрын

reminds me so much of myself. it just goes to show how wrong people can be. I know I just need to show my amazing and beautiful piece to the right people and I will be on my way to becoming rich and famous. the trouble is too many people judging a book by its cover. sometimes we just have to dig very deep and search beyond the cover. that's how we discover the most amazing treasures of the world.

I can't belive a so called professional would handle a painting like that. The damage he just did to the paint holding it with his hand then spinning it before placing it on the display. What a absolutely obtuse individual indeed
@borderlineiq2 жыл бұрын
That seems like an overreaction. The painting was apparently not floppy, nor disintegrating, All he did was turn it around from one central grip. Apparently, the British Museum didn't slash the price they paid for the painting for the horrendous damage you allege, as they paid over 100,000 for it, to the ecstatic joy of the owners. Yet, despite all that wonderful story, you've managed to find something to take offense by proxy for. Nicely done. Killjoy. Rethink your life.
