So let's keep things in perspective. Many people talked about pedophile rings in high places (Sinead O'conner, Corey Feldman, Hanibal Buress) without the benefit of an invasion of alien reptiles from another dimension, and no one thought they were crazy on account, so I'd say it's probably the "other stuff" that had people tittering. He had a redo with Icke many years later and apologized for this interview, not in the least because Icke has since been right many times, he took him quite a bit more seriously the second time. Thing is, this was at the beginning of Icke's life changing events and he was rather overwhelmed by it all and yes, had this disastrous interview and would subsequently be ridiculed everywhere he went. In hindsight he considers it a blessing as it freed him of having to conform to other people's expectations.
